For a day, councillor turns sanitation worker
Dera Bassi, June 27 Holding brooms, Vipan Thaman, councillor from Ward No. 7 of the municipality, along with his supporters and safai karamcharis carried out a cleanliness drive early in the morning and finished it by evening. Taking initiative, Thaman not only set an example for others but also showed a way to maintain cleanliness and hygiene to officials of the civic body. The councilllor claimed to have asked DS Sandhu, executive officer of Municipal Council, to provide him the safai karamcharis so that he could end the operation in a day. “All the streets, storm water gullies and dump collection spots were cleaned up and insecticides were sprayed at garbage bins to prevent outbreak of water and vector borne diseases,” Thaman said. A large numb of residents, including women and children, also joined the councillor in the drive and appreciated his initiative, said Bhupinder Singh Saini, a city-based social activist. |
Three arrested for stabbing youth to death
Chandigarh, June 27 The police arrested Rintu, alias Pintu, Ajay, alias Tunda, both residents of Ram Darbar, and Surdeep, alias Rokra, a resident of Deep Complex Hallo Majra for the murder. Sanjay Kumar (49), a resident of Zirakpur and supplier of polythene bags and disposable glasses, was stabbed to death near the Hallo Majra light point on the intervening night of June 25/26. There were six stabbing marks on his stomach. When he was rushed to the GMCH-32, doctors declared him brought dead. The police said three youths attacked Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Shivalik Vihar in Zirakpur, with the intention to rob him at 11.30 pm on that day. The police team investigating the murder got a vital lead on the basis of CCTV cameras installed near the CRPF building and got the first major lead that there are three accused who were seen fleeing in the CCTV footage. Further investigations and scrutiny of notorious criminals in the area led to the police swooping down on the accused as they had recently been released from the Burail jail. The police further got to know that the three were planning to go to Nepal, so they would come to Ram Darbar and Hallo Majra to fetch money and clothes from their homes. This information was further developed and the accused were nabbed from Hallo Majra and Ram Darbar. During interrogation it was revealed that the three were recently released from the Burail jail. After being released from the jail, they started committing robbery and dacoity at night with the help of weapons due to paucity of money. They have been arrested in the past in various cases of murder attempt, robbery and dacoity.
Murder for Rs 800?
The police recovered blood-stained notes amounting to Rs 800 from the possession of the accused, which they had robbed from the victim after stabbing him to death. The notes were mostly in denomination of Rs 10 and Rs 50. The police said these notes were robbed from the victim after stabbing him to death. The robbers were scared of spending these notes as these were blood-stained. The police will be sending the notes to the CFSL for matching with the blood of the victim to strengthen their case. |

Foreign exchange trader booked
Chandigarh, June 27 Sleuths of the Enforcement Directorate have swooped down on the premises of Chaudhary Medicoz in Sector 15 here last night and conducted a search and seizure operation. The Enforcement Directorate had received information that the cash lying with the foreign exchange trader was unaccounted for and could have been routed through hawala. Following the tip-off, an operation was conducted in his premises, which led to the seizure of foreign currency amounting to Rs 72.30 lakh and Rs 28.20 lakh in Indian currency. The owners of the company have been booked under various sections of the Foreign Exchange Management Act and investigations are on. |

Dowry charge added to FIR
Panchkula, June 27 Amit Kumar, police constable posted at Yamunanagar, was arrested with his father in the dowry death of his wife, Monika, a constable with the Panchkula police, on Wednesday. The police said as per the statement of the victim’s father, she was forced to consume poison. Following the death of the victim, the police booked nine persons, including all in-laws of the girl. The two had got married one year ago. “Before marriage when the two used to meet, Amit was apprehensive that she would get a car after wedding but when things didn’t turn out as per Amit’s wishes, the two would enter into brawl quite often,” said a senior police official. Even on the day of the incident, the in-laws had a brawl with the victim and then forced her to take poison, said Krishan Lal, father of the victim. The other seven accused, including three brothers of Amit, his sister-in-laws and mother are yet to be arrested. After the victim’s death, the police included Section 304B (dowry death) apart from sections 406, 498A, 323 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Panchkula, June 27 According to the police, the victim was suffering from financial problem. Station house officer of the Sector 5 police station, Inspector Manish said the victim was working as a band member and was in depression due to monetary problem. Surinder is survived by his wife and three kids. |

Morni case: Youth was murdered, say doctors
Panchkula, June 27 In this case, the police yesterday said that prima facie it seemed to be a suicide. However, the postmortem brought out a different picture. “It’s a murder as serious injury marks were found on the head and neck of the victim. Some sharp-edged weapon has been used,” said Dr Sunil Gambhir, head of the Forensic Department, who conducted the postmortem at General Hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula. He added, “We have even taken the viscera of the victim to ascertain whether he was given any sedatives or not.” Meanwhile, the local police said they were waiting for the reports to start further investigations. |

Eleven booked for cheating flat buyers
Zirakpur, June 27 Three other suspects in the case, who are said to be relatives of a senior Congress leader from Panchkula, are still under the police scanner. The suspects have been booked for their alleged involvement in selling plots and flats in a housing project, Vishranti, in Zirakpur a couple of years ago. The case was registered on the complaint of SS Dhand, the president of Residents Welfare Association of the society. Superintendent of Police Anil Sharma revealed that a case under Sections 420 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Sushil Bindal, his brother Pradeep Bindal, Payal Bindal, Naveen Bansal, Sumit Garg, Hem Raj Garg, Rattan Kumar Bansal, Satish Bansal, Ram Goel, Neha Sharma and Jaspal Singh, former sarpanch. Jaspal Singh, however, claimed that he was implicated in the case by his political rivals to settle scores. “I have nothing to do with the case,” he claimed. Struggling to get possession of their flats in a housing society for the past nearly two years, over 250 buyers were protesting against the company management for cheating them. The buyers had also reported to the police that the company had promised them possession of their flats by December 2012 but till date, they were not able to receive the documents. The company directors were giving excuses for the past nearly two years, they alleged. |

NRI woman accuses friend of fraud
Mohali, June 27 The IG of the NRI and Women’s Wing has transferred the probe into the allegations from Moga police to a Ludhiana DSP. Speaking to mediapersons at the Mohali Press Club here, Charanjit Kaur, a resident of Ransinh Kurd in Moga, said she had been staying in Germany for 18 years. She said she was a Punjabi writer and during her literary activities she got in touch with Ranjit Kumar, alias Bawa of Himmatpura, Moga. He later became a family friend. Charanjit alleged that she had asked him to buy an Endeavour car for her. He purchased a 2012 model car for Rs 17.60 lakh, which she gave to Ranjit Kumar. However, later she came to know from the previous owner of the car that it was a 2008 model and had been sold to Ranjit Kumar for Rs 8 lakh. She alleged that in October 2013 she gave Rs 3 lakh to Ranjit Kumar to purchase stones for construction purposes from Rajasthan. Later, her husband also gave Rs 9.66 lakh for the same work. However, she alleged that he spent only a part of the money and a sum of Rs 7.66 lakh was still with him. Charanjit added that instead of returning the money he threatened her. She also alleged that Ranjit Kumar had withdrawn Rs 4.60 lakh from an ATM when she was in Germany. In all, she alleged, he had duped her of Rs 21.85 lakh. Ranjit Kumar, however, told the correspondent over the phone that the allegations levelled against him were baseless. “An inquiry into the matter had been conducted by SSP, Moga, and nothing was found against me. She could not provide proofs of the charges levelled against him, he added. |

Remand of accused cops extended
Mohali, June 27 Earlier, the court had sent Constable Amrit Pal Singh and Havildar Mohan Lal to two-day police remand, which expired today. The police said Amrit Pal had also sustained an injury in the scuffle. On the basis of the medical report, a cross-case has been registered. The police had booked Amrit Pal, his father Rashpal Singh, Havildar Mohan Lal and some unidentified persons under Sections 302, 307, 148 and 149 of the IPC at the Phase-VIII police station.
