Punch line
We know her as a beautiful woman. Also one with brains and oodles of talent that manifested first in 2005 in much acclaimed film Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi earning her adulation and flattering comparisons with yet another dusky and talented beauty Smita Patil.
But as the star of movies like Desi Boyz, Inkaar and I Me Aur Main, sultry and sexy Chitrangada Singh came calling it was in a different avatar that of a fitness enthusiast. Looking every inch a brand ambassador of Puma, attired in functional gym wear, she was in City Beautiful to promote Puma Urban Stampede. The race that gets going in Chandigarh on July 6 (organised by Chandigarh Tourism and CII with The Tribune as the media partner) has her gushing about the importance of running and of course overall fitness. Fit as a fiddle, fitness actually is not just another word in her lexicon but a way of life. Radiant as ever she shares her beauty and fitness mantras. First things first, what is the secret behind the beautiful her? She laughs and quips, "Right now it is make-up." On a serious note she reveals her skin is at a glowing best after a workout. Being part of a visual medium where looks matter as if one's life depended on it, she dare not undermine the power of remaining in shape. Her fitness regimen isn't grueling but does involve kickboxing sessions five times a week, besides swimming and yoga. Even though she has observed golf at close quarters with two family members Digvijay Singh and Jyoti Singh Randhawa being accomplished golfers she maintains that golf is not her favourite game (actually tennis is). However, she has certainly played golf (for the curious cats her handicap was about 18) and knows the game well enough to appreciate and understand its finer details. Sports, she believes, play a significant part in one's life and instill confidence, especially among children. She quips, "Look at the children at the golf course. They behave like little men. Sport is the best way to teach children aggression of the right kind and other qualities that can't be taught in a school." Being a sportsperson can be can be a huge advantage in filmdom too. She asserts "Look at Milind Soman (national swimmer) or even Salman Khan (who I think has played many sports), there is certainly a difference in the way they are, their body language." Yes, she would love to pay a sports icon on silver screen. Which one she can't say… Not PT Usha and the boxer Mary Kom's part is already taken by Priyanka Chopra. While she is game if such a role ever came her way, she is fully aware of the hard work that goes with it. To
be able to play a sport as well as the real sportsperson can't possibly be a cakewalk. And being a brand ambassador for an international sports label… does that put extra pressure to remain fit. She answers. "No I am fit by choice not compulsion." Sure diet plays a huge part in maintaining a svelte figure. Only she follows a basic diet that goes like this--more carbs during the day, more proteins in the later half and not to forget less oil and less salt. But no starvation diets please. She has never done it nor advocates it for others. The crux she insists lies in being a fitter person not a thinner one. So there you have it all…what makes her the beauty that she is. However, while she handles all queries pertaining to fitness and beauty secrets, on her film career her lips are sealed. But she promises to keep us posted about filmy news in very near future. So watch this space.

Maan with a message
Singer, songwriter, poet, performer, actor; the classifications even when put together fail to bring across the entirety of Gurdas Maan. The man who has accomplished enough to skip any introductions and referred to by the younger lot in the music industry as the icon! When little else remains unachieved, it is time to aim even higher. For instance, social causes. Something he has already taken up through his music and lyrics.
"My songs itself are a message. Have always taken up the drug menace among Punjabi youth or importance of staying fit through my songs. Nobody's asked me to sing such songs, it comes straight from the heart," he shares, while in Chandigarh, for a charity performance for Rani Breast Cancer Trust. Dressed in colours that reflect the spirit of the cause, he plays his role of ambassador to perfection. Only this time, it was devoid of pretenses. Isn't this something that all celebrities should be doing? Involved with one cause or the other from the bottom of their heart? "Most of the celebrities are already involved in some cause or the other. After one achieves a distinction in life and reaches anywhere, it is important that they take up some cause." He adds, "After one has taken care of self, they should take care of society and give back. Any virtuous man would do that. In order to be counted among complete men, it is imperative that they do something for the society." It is a subject that unfortunately hasn't invited the attention of the cinema and film fraternity as yet. Save for an old classic, as pointed out by the founder member, Dard Ka Rishta. He shares, "Yes, there should be more and more of such films but the question is-will somebody buy tickets for a film that takes up a cause. People want to go, laugh and come back?" As for any organisation that brings together the entire industry on the issue of cancer, he shares, "If it were in my hands, I'd literally go to every artist and ask them to join in on the endeavour. There should definitely be such an association." Isolated as it might appear before his current efforts, but we last saw him in Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar and heard him in album Roti. Apart from this, there are a couple of projects on the anvil. "Projects always keep happening side by side…I just released a single titled Eternal Jogi," he signs off. manpriya@tribunemail.com The performance is today at The Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh at 6.30 pm.
The Trust
It took an unfortunate incident for a philanthropic endeavour. An incident that was as unfortunate as unexpected. Which is why the endeavour of the trust remains in spreading awareness more than anything else. Shares Bittu Sandhu, the founder member, "We focus on prevention rather than cure… That's why the activities of the trust are more oriented towards spreading awareness about the disease and whatever it takes to do that. Right from seminars to door-to-door campaigning to having celebrities lend their support…Like they say, a stitch in time saves nine, timely detection can help save life." Well said.

Kitchen corner
A home-maker spends most of her time in the kitchen. Just like the job, the place too remains an unsung hero at home. While the R&D teams of electronic giants have taken care of entertainment needs of the entire house and every living space, right from the bathrooms to bedrooms, the kitchen has always stayed tucked in the corner, being neatly overlooked.
However,
Kutchina, an appliance company, promises to offer kitchen solutions for the Indian home-maker and even go beyond. Shares Namit
Bajoria, director, Bajoria Appliances Private Limited, "A housewife spends most of her time in the kitchen, yet the entertainment needs in the kitchen have so far been over-looked. We have music systems and television sets for living rooms and even the bathrooms, but not the kitchen. This one should ensure that spending time in the kitchen is a lifestyle experience." In Chandigarh for the launch of his latest product, which takes the idea of electronic chimneys a few notches higher, he adds, "It is an LCD screen on the chimney. One can connect the cable, watch television, connect it to wi-fi and even download the recipes. One can explore anything basically." At the touch of a button and right in the kitchen! That immediately suggests the blend of a modern woman who is tech savvy enough to utilise even the time spent in kitchen. "We are also looking at launching some more products that ensure that the kitchen area is as connected and upgraded as any other part of the house." Having introduced the auto clean technology, he further promises appliances where the flame can be timed to go off. As for some of the upcoming kitchen trends, he says, "Kitchens are getting more and more
customised. In fact, they are getting as personal as tailored clothing; taking care of individual needs." — Manpriya Singh

The better butter!
It's not the conventional butter that harms more than it benefits the body - peanut butter is everything healthy to gain from and to elaborate on the same, Chandigarh-based dietician, Shreya
Goel, held a workshop at Taj in Chandigarh on Thursday. "The general perception is that peanut butter is fattening and leads to high cholesterol, which is all a myth," says
Shreya. The fact is that it is rich in protein, works as a great iron supplement and is best for diabetic and anemic patients. "It's also very filling and thus helps in weight management. It has no oil or cholesterol or trans-fatty acids." The workshop also was about peanut butter recipes, milk shakes topping the menu. — TNS |

The year ahead
If your birthday is June 27...
Your birth on June 27 adds a tone of selflessness and humanitarianism to your nature. This birthday helps you to be broadminded, tolerant, generous and very cooperative. You use persuasion rather than force to achieve your goals. Ruled by Mars, number 9 is somewhat impractical. You need to be decisive to invest in real estate or gold as there are risks involved. Do not trust in partnership. You can expect good results at work. There are chances for official travel. Physically and physiologically you will be subject to ups and downs. Improvement in finances is certain. Positive colours: Golden, Red, White. Select days: Tuesday, Friday, Thursday. Favourable numbers: 3, 6, 9. Gems recommended: Red Coral, Yellow Sapphire. Charity on Birthday: Donate a red dress at the marriage of poor girl.
You share your birthday with Tanay Hemant Chheda (June 27, 1996, Mumbai) who won the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding performance in the movie Slumdog Millionaire (2008). His will face some struggles because of Rahu's dasha.
