Shiamak Davar puts spring in their feet
Ambala, June 26 “Dancercise” is how Shiamak describes his workshops that combine dance and exercise. The steps are a combination of hip hop, salsa, rock ‘n’ roll, contemporary dance in a fusion, which are appealing and highly energetic. The fun quotient in the workshops is optimum as students discover talents they did not know existed in them. Working at different levels, the fortnight-long dance workshop helps them open up, make friends and understand the concept of music and rhythm. The entire design of the workshop is participatory with students having an equal say in what they want to do and which pieces of music they want to dance on. The grand finale at the SD College Auditorium this evening captured the immense progress the group had made during the fortnight through a professionally executed 40-minute crisp show. Seven dance sequences were presented, heightened with audio visuals and relevant commentary, demonstrating Shiamak Davar’s belief and motto of “have feet, will dance”. His conviction is that anyone who has feet can learn dance. Reason perhaps why his workshops are such a hit even with the specially challenged, with children of sex workers in Mumbai and with senior citizens in old age homes. The joy on the faces of the performers was the evidence of the success of the workshop. The energy that pulsated through the medleys and dance numbers on the stage was palpable. Little wonder that the classes find repeat participants who enroll year after year to upgrade their dancing skills and move up the different levels of dance regimen. Atul Khanna, director of the Durga Das Foundation in Chandigarh, along with BK Soni, president of the SD College Society, have been instrumental in bringing Shiamak to the city of Ambala. Khanna said: “We at the foundation have been holding Shiamak’s dance workshops twice a year for the past over 10 years and the interest has only grown essentially because the workshop is not just about dance but more about life and living.” While talking to some of the students at the Ambala show, one is convinced that the city is ready to deliver on some Shiamak magic. Chetna Manchanda, a participant, said: “In school, I never stepped forward for dance lessons. I was scared of dancing. But here, I felt so much at ease. I now know that dance is a form of exercise and expression of creativity and inner thoughts. It is a spiritual experience. I am already looking forward to the winter workshop.” |
