Make some noise
Ole Ola or Waka Waka… football fanatics get together to celebrate world's most loved game and the anthem every four years…
Jasmine Singh

One night watch the world unite

Two sides, one fight and a million eyes

Full heart's gonna work so hard

Shoot, fall, the stars

Fists raised up towards the sky

Tonight watch the world unite, world unite, world unite

For the fight, fight, fight, one night

Watch the world unite

Two sides, one fight and a million eyes

Pitbull and Jenifer Lopez have hit a goal with this year's FIFA song. It is peppy and inspiring. The elements that an anthem is supposed to have. But then out of the blue, some people drop their comments on Youtube about the missing punch in the anthem. The obvious comparison is Shakira's anthem for FIFA in 2010 Waka Waka.

And you thought it was just a track. If back home, the anthems we have are based on cricket, it doesn't in any way reduces the importance of the FIFA anthem. The game which is surprisingly changing the fate of every underdog team is a religion worldwide and so are the tunes attached to it. What do you have to say?

Get pumpin’

It's the This time for Africa song by Shakira that was lapped up by every football and non-football fan alike. It hit the corner in 2010 FIFA cup. "As a sportsperson, I give cheering immense importance. It motivates every player on the field. It kind of boils your blood, shoots up the energy level of the player. The sad thing is that except for FIFA, we don't have anthems for any other sport. There are songs either for IPL or World Cup but nothing that matches the carze for FIFA anthem," shares boxing champion and actor Vijender Singh who quite likes the Pitbull's Ole Ola.

Ole Ola invites the entire world to come together and play, but it is still Shakira that people like to remember. You're a good soldier, choosing your battles, pick yourself up and dust yourself off… Get back in the saddle… croons actor-singer Gitaz Bindrakhia, a die hard football fan. "I remember each and every word of Waka Waka. It is such an inspiring and soulful number talking about those 90 minutes of a football match. Having said this, I wouldn't say Ole Ola is bad, it just lacks the punch. In fact, instead of comparing, I think every sport in our country should have a cheer song," he adds.

Hand in hand

Sports and music have always gone hand in hand. So, when your team races ahead, you want a track ringing in your head that pumps the adrenaline, makes you cheer, yell and shout and motivate your favourite players. Jump Around by House Of Pains, We will rock you by Queens, Crazzy Train from Ozzy Osbourne are played probably in every baseball match. Start Me Up by Rolling Stones rings at the beginning of many basketball matches, Song 2 by Blurr is every sports fan's favourite get-going song. "Is their anything better than Hit The Road Jack by Ray Charles or Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses. I heard that fans use this song to tell the opposing team that they have walked into a zoo full of crazed animals or just really rowdy fans, so better be beware," laughs music director Kirpal Sharma as he shares the small anecdote. Kirpal cannot deny the fact that sports anthems is a tradition abroad. "We don't much believe in anthems, some singers would probably come together to sing something on cricket or maybe hockey (once a million years), otherwise we don't have sports cheering music.

If you are a NBA fan you couldn't have missed Let It Rock by Kevin Rudolf Ft Lil Wayne. Something that DJ Sameer Sandhu from Chandigarh remembers. He is however of the opinion that we should also havse cheer songs. "To me both Pitbull, Shakira and even Ricky Martin's Un Dos Tres were fabulous anthems. C'mon do we have anything like this for our sports?"

I regularly share decorating tips with home owners but what about the large percentage of people who live on rent? Whether you're a would-be buyer delaying purchase because of the credit crunch, or you're a student who's just moved into your first rental property, you will be desperate to make your new place feel like a home. But to walk into white walls and boring, old fashioned furniture can be so inhospitable.

With dos and don'ts set by landlords, how does one decorate and personalise rented property?

Wall paper/fabric panels

No landlord will allow entire walls to be wallpapered. So an alternative would be to paste wallpaper to plywood panels and lean them against walls. It's easy and inexpensive. Ask your local wallpaper supplier for end rolls at discounted rates. Alternatively, you can use fabric draped over a rod screwed into the wall or just go ahead and frame it.

Attractive bed linen

Pretty coloured bed linen will instantly lift a drab room and add a touch of luxury to everyday surroundings. It won't date and will add some summer sunshine all year round. Always invest in the best quality you can — it'll go a long way

Modular storage

This is great for rented properties, not only will it fit any size or shape room; it's also easy to remove at the end of a tenancy.

Statement lighting

You might not be able to change the positioning of your ceiling lights, but whether it's with lamps, lanterns, candles or statement pendant lights, you can control the ambient lighting.

Cover it up

If you've inherited an ugly patterned sofa, why not take the help of an upholsterer to stitch up fitted loose covers for it or easier still, use a throw to cover it up and finish with colourful cushions.

Drape delight

If you're stuck with awful curtains, remove old ones safely and buy some cheap replacements in a plain colour. If you're handy with a sewing machine, try running up some simple tab-top curtains using old sheets, or adding a trim or braid to your existing curtains to jazz them up.

Area rugs

These are ideal for covering up unsightly flooring and adds personality to a space.

Fill them up

Bare shelves will always make a place feel like temporary accommodation, so fill them up with books, vases, antiques and other decorative accessories.

Bathing beauty

A grotty bathroom with discoloured grouting can be brightened up using a whitener and the landlord is hardly likely to complain about such an improvement. Bathroom accessories to suit all budgets can make all the difference; a new bath mat, set of towels and a shower curtain.

Liven up walls

There are of course the framed photographs or artwork, but why not try getting one of your photos printed on canvas. Alternatively, turn your favourite photograph into a work of art by using photo-editing software such as Photoshop to create a painted look or turn it monochrome. Upsetting the landlord with these ideas is out of the question....he may well be impressed enough to ask for interior advise to his own home!

Eat in style

Buy a table runner and place mats to dress the dining table. A vase of flowers, natural or artificial, will give the room a fresh and cared-for look.

Egyptian flare...

A model wearing a designer pre-draped Egyptian style saree with Rupam Grewal
(L-R) A model wearing a designer pre-draped Egyptian style saree with Rupam Grewal

When one thinks of Egyptian women's wear, the mind conjures up names of two, larger than life personalities who influenced world history. One is Nefertiti and the other Cleopatra. The dresses worn by Cleopatra, played by actress Elizabeth Taylor in the 1963 Hollywood blockbuste Cleopatra, too come to mind. Now trendy and style conscious divas of the region have an option to choose from a creative Egyptian theme collection, which couturier Rupam Grewal, who owns the haute couture brand Jaamawar Minx (JM), has launched. The stunning summer designer wear was recently unveiled at the Jaamawar Minx studio in Elante Mall.

The latest works of JM is inspired by Lapis Lazuli, a deep blue semi precious stone popular with Egyptians. The bead work done reflects the intense coloured stone, which was used by queens and princesses in their dresses, down the ages. Says Rupam Grewal, "We have tried to replicate the elegant Egyptian cuts and styles, in a Western and Indian way. While the look of the designer apparel is Egyptian, we have made it more contemporary and glamourous. The USP certainly is the way we have used colours. Apart from Lapis, coral, gold, emerald green we have used lend an ethereal touch to attires." In the Western apparel of the Egyptian Line, there are black and gold gowns and dresses. Also available are emerald green cocktail party wear dresses.

Pallak Kakkar, assistant designer, JM, who is also an alumnus of the prestigious NIFT, says, "The Egyptian tinge has been intelligently introduced in Western as well as Indian wear. The bead and sequence work along the neck of the dresses is what makes the range very different from anything else in its category." Apart from the Egyptian attire, a wide range is available for the summers. There are column shirts with pants in different styles (flared, cigarette). In dresses, Anarkali's have gone Western this summer in JM's new range. What's more, the saree gown is a really smart designer wear dress that comes this season from the stable of Jaamawar Minx. — TNS

stress buster
Balancing act...
renee singh

We often talk about maintaining balance in our lives. Do we actually? But sometimes in our effort to maintain that balance we stress ourselves even more. It is important to have a mix of work and play in life in order to maintain general level of wellness. However balance is more easily longed for than maintained. The term "balance" has generally become a buzzword therefore I feel it is very important for all of us to find exactly what mix we need in order to enjoy our lives.

Balance perhaps is what all humans need to live a normal healthy life. Most creative people don't fall into this category but in order to keep ourselves into a steady graph we do need to keep our levels of balance correct. Maintaining a level of balance is one of our main ways of keeping stress at bay. We try to keep a lifestyle that is in sync with our values, a schedule that includes health promoting habits and a perspective that helps us in dealing with the challenges of life. All of these things are a part of stress management. Our day to day life would be highly comfortable if we allowed these strategies into our lives. Of course there are times when one is thrown off balance regardless of great strategic planning.

Many times the schedule you plan, the attitude you maintain or even your general lifestyle changes according to a new situation. Huge level of adjustment is required to adjust and cope with the new situation.

Realistic goals

Holding ourselves to unrealistic standards sometimes causes more stress than just being in our normal routine. This way we infuse more stress. Sometimes many of life's minor challenges create a need of adjustment. Sometimes we get bogged down by some particular toxic stressor. Whether we allow them to overwhelm us is absolutely our discretion. When our response is triggered, we are reacting and not really responding. We then create a downward spiral of stressor and we need to contend with these. Here are a few solutions:

Meditation magic: This creates resilience towards stress. We become less reactive and it is easy for us to reach a place of balance.

Pen it down: Letting go your feelings flow on paper gives an immense feeling of peace and helps you to feel balanced.

Talk to a friend: Even better than journaling. You can reap the benefits of social support, gain new perspectives. Talking to a therapist is also a great stress reliever.

Cultivate hobbies: These help you stay in the moment. Down times tend to get you down. Find unconventional stress relievers that can provide fun and distraction.

Pamper yourself: Taking care of your body with a spa treatment is a real must. Prepares you to take on the world.

Process your emotions: Keeping them bottled inside is a real stress creator. Listen to your feelings, process them and try to understand.

Spiritual practise: It elevates the human spirit, raises your consciousness thereby making all super things accessible to you.

Healthy eating: This always keeps you healthy and happy. In order to keep a balance in life we have to make a conscious effort but to keep ourselves happy and stress free it is well worth the effort.

Fabric fiesta

The Weave & Print Society with the brand name of Lipakshee, registered with Development Commissioner, Handicrafts Ministry of Textile Government of India has displayed a wide range of dress material particularly from Andhra Pradesh is on at Lajpat Rai Bhawan -15B, Chandigarh.

Kalamkari, the craft of painted fabrics derives its name from kalam or pen with which the patterns are traced. It is an art form that was developed both for decorative and religious adornment. The discovery of a resist-dyed piece of cloth on a silver vase at the Ancient site of Harappa confirms that the tradition of Kalamkari is very old. Even the ancient Buddhist Chityaviharas were decorated with Kalamkari cloth. The great Alexander is also supposed to have acquired this Kalamkari cloth. Machilipatnam and Srikalahasti in Andhra Pradesh are famous for Kalamkari. With their roots in temple rituals, Kalamkari cloth also followed the old tradition of religious mural paintings. The art flourished under the patronage of the temples in Srikalahasti because of the demand for hangings with strong figurative and narrative components. The handloom on display are Kalamkari hand block printed dress material, Kalamkari bed sheets, Kalamkari bed block printed shits, Kalamkari tops and Kalamkaribed block printed hand bags. Block printed material from other states like Rajasthan, chiken fabric from Lucknow, Chanderi, Maheshwari, Bhagalpur silk and exclusive duppatas from Bihar, block printed dress material of Gujarat, handloom kurtas from Chennai and South Indian handloom from Tamil Nadu is here too.

STAR TRACK
The versatility of Varun Dhawan

Post Student of the Year, Varun Dhawan has chosen diverse roles to prove his capability as an actor. While in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania he plays a typical Punjabi lover boy, his character in ABCD2 (Any Body Can Dance 2) is of a passionate dancer. He talks about his movies and his Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania co-star Alia Bhatt...

A break from the usual

Unlike my previous endeavours, there's not much song-and-dance for me in Sriram Raghavan's dark thriller, Badlapur. This time, my role spans three generations and three decades, starting from the '80s to the present day and demands three different looks.

On ABCD 2

Shraddha and I are the only two non-dancers in the cast. I am very excited about the physically demanding role. I am hanging out and rehearsing with The Fictitious Group, a dance troupe whose real life journey from Vasai to Las Vegas inspired the film. I'm dancing so much that I'm losing weight too.

Getting inked

The film takes off in Mumbai this Independence Day. I'm planning to get myself a bunch of tattoos. One of them will be like Remo's MJ tattoo. I will spend a lot of time in tattoo parlours also.

Playing Humpty Sharma

I am from Mumbai and I had to become a Punjabi Delhi boy. These days people are complimenting me on the way I cry when I watch Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in the trailer. I can't believe they're amused by my angst! Both Alia Bhatt and I are huge fans of DDLJ.

On Alia Bhatt

That's the way we are in real life too so it doesn't feel like acting. I once made Alia cry on the sets with my pranks and then had to buy her a gift. Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is in a space between friendship and love like it is with us. Well, Alia is very special and not just another friend. I'll always be protective and possessive of her.

Brangelina’s million dollar pad

Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have added a massive skate park to their newly constructed Los Feliz home in Los Angeles, California.

The skate park is apparently for eight-year-old Shiloh, who loves to skateboard, reported a magazine. "She's very into skating. She's a skateboarder," a source said. The skate park runs alongside the house and has metal grinds and a soft padding area where Shiloh and siblings Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, 9, Knox, 5, and Vivienne, 5, can crash safely. Pitt originally purchased the 5,338-square-foot property for USD 1.7 million back in 1994. The 12 Years a Slave actor then bought four adjacent lots surrounding the estate to accommodate for his brood. The couple also owns homes in Italy, New Orleans, Malibu and New York. — PTI

JLo’s fashion advice…

Jennifer Lopez generally does not like to talk about her relationships but the newly single singer took credit for actor-director Ben Affleck's good fashion moments when they were dating. Affleck and Lopez's highly publicised three-year-old romance saw them being dubbed as Bennifer by the media and when asked how the couple looked so good together, Lopez accepted her role.

In an appearance during Watch What Happens Live! Lopez was asked some questions by host Andy Cohen. She initially tried to wriggle out of the situation but later playfully dished on her famous exes.

"I did, kind of like, say, 'You're a movie star! You should wear a suit. You should do this with your hair.' For sure! He had some good fashion moments with me. Yeah!," she said.

Affleck is currently married to Jennifer Garner but former exes are said to be on friendly terms. — PTI

The latest on the lovebirds

Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif are back in town from South Africa. They were spotted at a party at Karan Johar's house last week and have also finalised a place of their own in Bandra and are excited to move in together.

They shopped a lot for their new place. They bought kitchen items and other household and decorative items. They say that Ranbir fussed a lot over Katrina Kaif while they were in SA.

Of Khoobsurat and Ugly

It's quite a funny co-incidence that Anurag Kashyap's critically-acclaimed film Ugly and the remake of 1980 classic comedy Khoobsurat are releasing on the same day -September 19. Apart from the opposite titles, their genres are also quite contrasting. We think that audience is going to have fun time while deciding.

Question of faith

Emraan Hashmi asked to shoot a portion of Raja Natwarlal at the famous Haji Ali Dargah in South Mumbai because he considers it to be lucky. He often goes there before his films' release to offer prayers.

Under the Mediterranean sun
Zoya and Farhan Akhtar are on a cruise in the Mediterranean shooting for Dil Dhadakne Do and they are very excited to be in Spain because they have fond memories of shooting over there for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara.

Nargis scores the point
Nargis Fakhri has bagged an item song in Kick, which will be shot next week on a lavish set with the actors wearing funky costumes. She beat many actresses to it.

When reputation precedes
There have been rumours that many actresses aren't comfortable associating themselves with Shahid Kapoor, because of his Casanova image, as they are answerable to their family and friends. Well, fair enough!

Struck by luck
Amitabh Bachchan and Abhay Deol will star in the first Indo-China project and the movie will be shot in India, USA and China. It is called Gold Struck.

Chatter Box
Of facts and fiction

Discovery Channel presents its first scripted series Klondike, which focuses on the Klondike gold rush in the 1890s and is based on Charlotte Gray's book, Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike.

Featuring Richard Madden (King of the North Robb Stark of Game of Thrones, A Promise), Abbie Cornish (RoboCop, Limitless), Tim Roth (Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs) and Sam Shepard (August: Osage County, Out Of The Furnace), Klondike tells the powerful story of the last great Gold Rush in our history. This epic six hour series will air from June 23 to 28, every night at 10 PM.

Based on Charlotte Gray's book, Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike, the six-part period drama brings to life the tale of seven strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the remote Klondike. The journey begins in 1897 when two childhood best friends, Bill (Madden) and Epstein (Augustus Prew) make the perilous journey through the North American wilderness to Klondike boom town Dawson City.

Klondike is a man-versus-nature tale that places the characters in a land full of undiscovered wealth, but ravaged by harsh conditions, unpredictable weather and deceptive, dangerous individuals fuelled by desperateness - including greedy businessmen, seductive courtesans and native tribes witnessing the destruction of their people and land by opportunistic entrepreneurs.
