Rowers hold protest at Sukhna Lake
Accuse authorities of damaging boats, denying entry to the Sports Complex for practice
Deepankar Sharda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, June 19
Rowers of the Punjab Rowing Association, who practice at the Lake Sports Complex, had a harrowing time when they were allegedly stopped from entering their practice premises due to the ongoing tussle between the general manager of the club and a coach of the association today morning.

The rowers staged a protest outside the main entrance of the practice arena, along with their coach and senior members of the association, for not allowing them to enter the premises. The members also alleged that their boats, kept inside the lake sports complex, were allegedly damaged by the local authorities.

On the other hand, general manager of the club maintained that the players are never stopped from practicing at the lake sports complex but it was the coach who was not allowed to enter after he failed to produce the membership card.

According to the rowers, today in the morning, when they arrived at the lake sports complex the authorities stopped them and asked to take permission from the general manager. The members were attending their first practice session after returning from the sub¬-junior and junior rowing national championship. Also they alleged that three boats, including one single scull and two double-sculls, have been damaged by the authorities in an effort to remove them from the premises. The players submitted a written letter with the director sports, joint director sports and submitted a written complaint of damaging the property at Chandigarh police’s public window.

“We have submitted a written complaint with the authorities. The sports complex is being run under a one man show with the general manager adopting single-hand decision approach. Also, in order to get an extension, he is asking members to write good about him. However, on the other end players like us are suffering. Earlier, tennis players were made to suffer with the plan coming up for the shooting range,” a group of players said.

When contacted, the general manager of the complex, TS Dhillon, maintained that players were never stopped to enter the premises. “I have never ordered to stop players from entering the premises. However, the role was questioned. After a series of notices and confirming it from the senior officials of the Punjab Rowing Association, entry was restricted for the coach not the players. The association will hand over the name of players to the lake sports complex authorities and they will be entitled to perform practice here,” Dhillon said. He also added that the coach had no record of players getting trained under him and was not authorised to perform any activity.

“We have maintained all the records and also a daily attendance register. We are facing problem since long and practicing here since past eight years. The manager has problem with players from Punjab as they have been performing better than local rowers. Players from Chandigarh and Panjab University practice with us and we do maintain discipline. In reply to the notices, I have asked the manager to contact the association as I am performing the work under them. Who is responsible for the damaged boats and other equipment?” questioned coach Gurinder Singh Cheema.

Problematic management

Sukhna Lake is the most appreciated track for water sports lovers and since long, players of Punjab and Haryana claim their space for practice. Even ITBP, CRPF, PAP teams prefer to practice here. However, certain changes in the management of the Lake Sports Complex make these players suffer more. Earlier, many members raised objections over the newly built shooting range over the hard tennis courts of the complex. However, later the members were allowed to use the hard courts.

Officialspeak

I have never ordered to stop players from entering the premises. However, only the identity cards were asked from them. After a series of notices and confirming it from the senior officials of the Punjab Rowing Association, entry was restricted only for the coach and not the players. The association will hand over the names of the players to the Lake Sports Complex authorities and then they can practice here without further hassles.

— TS Dhillon, General Manager, Lake Sports Complex
