New swimming pools a big hit in Mohali
Akash Ghai
Tribune News Service

Mohali, June 14
Splashing in pools is the best way to beat the heat in this sultry weather and this is what residents, particularly the children, in the town are doing these days. As many as 600 swimming enthusiasts registered in just two weeks at the recently opened two swimming pools, being run by the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA).

The two pools — at Sector 59 and Sector 71 — which were thrown open to the public in the first week of this month, are already full to capacity.

More applications, in a large number, are still pouring in everyday at these pools for registration.

Both pools are a part of the multipurpose sports complexes, which have other sports facilities, including badminton, table tennis and basketball courts.

Dilip Rana, Sports Administrator of these sports complexes, said the response, particularly to the swimming pools, was simply tremendous.

“The pool at Sector 59 has already registered 310 members while in Sector 71 pool, we have around 290 members. Interestingly, students and small children are showing interest in the sport, which is a good sign”, said Rana while talking to Chandigarh Tribune.

Rana, who is a former physical trainer of the Indian hockey team, has also served as the chief coach of volleyball in the Army Sports Institute, Pune, and talent hunting in-charge at the Sports Medicine Centre, Pune.

He said if provided proper infrastructure, several swimmers (particularly small children), out of these enthusiasts, could be prepared for big events.

“We are going to open another world class swimming pool with all competitive facilities at Phase IX on Monday. After spotting talented swimmers we could train them at this pool,” said Rana.

Ravi Kant Thakur and Prabhdeep Kaur, coaches at the pool in Sector 71, expressed similar views.

They said several small children had been showing good results.

“With proper training and facilities, these kids can be converted into national and international swimmers,” said the coaches.

Thakur added that the pools were being run for eight hours daily in two shifts (four hours each in morning and evening).

“As we have also getting youngsters in other sports, including badminton (around 250), table tennis (around 100), basketball (around 130), skating (around 50) and lawn tennis (around 185) in our all-sports complexes, located in Sector 59, 61, 65, 69 and 71, we need around 15 more coaches and other supported staff to handle the sportspersons efficiently,” said Rana, adding that there was a need to set up a sports medical centre in the town.

Shortcomings in sports complexes

Though these sports complexes have been constructed recently, several shortcomings in these premises raise an eyebrow. Tiles on the floor of swimming pool in Sector 59 have started rupturing, resulted in injuries to body parts of swimmers. Several taps and fountains in the changing rooms and washrooms can be seen non-functioning. The small but important things, including mirrors and lintel hooks (to hang clothes) are also missing there.

Earlier, a report on alleged use of substandard material has also published in these columns following which GMADA Chief Administrator AK Sinha had also ordered a probe in this connection. A senior official of GMADA said the authorities had also blacklisted the contractor in this regard.
