Summer no bar
It’s a common joke at Punjabi weddings that the rise and fall in mercury has nothing do with what women wear! Backless blouses, sheer sarees, skimpy cholis and heavy lehangas remain the staple wear at weddings even as weather conditions lose to fashion. So, when summer jackets became a part of spring summer collections at India’s two major fashion weeks, the same logic is applied—fashion takes precedence over weather. Or how can you imagine someone shelling out Rs 5,000 for a summer jacket from Marks & Spencer at Elante, Chandigarh when Met Department has declared that it is already 44 degrees? But it happens; even at Vero Moda and Zara, the floral versions of the garment are available. Summer jackets sure are a major trend this season.
Being sensible It’s a trend heavily borrowed from the West, where it makes sense because weather conditions keep varying. But In India, where summer is longer and stretches up to nine months, the utility of summer jacket is doubtful. “It is meant for people who move from one air-conditioned space to another. It’s an alternative to winter layering, wherein you can just pair it with a tank top or a ganji,” says fashion designer Aneeth Arora, who for her spring summer collection made summer jackets in chanderi silk and khadi. While her version of the garment is very casual, Pankaj and Nidhi’s is sporty chic, Ashish Soni kept it formal and structured at the Wills Indian Fashion Week’s finale last year and Manish Malhotra came up with floral jackets. The garment works extremely well for people on the go. It’s a ready-made solution to the casual look, when you just need to throw it over a tee. As Gaurav Jai Gupta says, “Give it the same treatment as you give to a scarf. Use it as an accessory to style up yourself rather than as an outfit.” Fabric matters Cotton, linen, chanderi silk are fine but when Mango terms a buttoned blazer made in 100 per cent polyester worth Rs 3,500, a summer jacket is not meant for the scorching season at all. Zara too has a variety in floral prints, neon colours and in bright shades but these don’t serve the purpose as the fabric is not apt for the summer. Jayesh of Quirkbox got a thumbs-up from fashion followers when they presented summer jackets at the LFW, all in linen, cotton and Chanderi silk. “We picked breathable material, which made the jacket very practical attire,” Jayesh says. And this summer saw a number of celebrities taking to their jackets, including Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt. Before & after First came the shrugs, then the bolero jackets and now it is the summer jackets - longer and sleeved. Jayesh credits the trend to the popularity of androgynous fashion. “It’s now that fashion designers have started creating them for women, which are designed according to the body type and are well-fitted.” Jayesh predicts that it is a trend that is here to stay. Vaishali S experimented with the silhouette with hand-woven fabrics and added length to the popular size of summer jacket. “It’s like a long coat but in fabric that is so summer-friendly,” she says. She forecasts that next spring summer will witness more versions. “Something like trench jacket or like what I created -— a long coat.” Who says you can’t add layers in
summer?

Talk It is important to protect your skin against the scorching sun Dr Vikas Sharma In modern day life, sunscreens have become an indispensable part of every person's daily skincare routine. The sun is the ultimate culprit for skin ageing; excessive exposure can weaken the skin's immunity to the sun and lead to precancerous skin conditions in predisposed individuals. The best choice Choosing the perfect product depends not on brands, but on sunscreen ingredients. The importance of sunscreen safety plays a major role on healthier and younger-looking skin. Most sunscreens have a unique molecular structure that absorbs the high-energy ultraviolet (UV) rays and converts them to a less harmful energy level, thus preventing the harmful effect of the UV rays from penetrating the skin. The key ingredients to search for UVA defence are Mexoryl or Mexoryl-Sx, Avobenzone or 3% (not 2%) Parsol 1789, Zinc Oxide, and Titanium Dioxide. These first two ingredients are called chemical sunscreen ingredients. Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide is the physical sunscreen ingredients, usually in opaque form, and best for sensitive skin. These are better than chemical sunscreens although less preferred because of its opacity. What is SPF? SPF was given a numerical rating that tells us the degree of protection that is being provided by the sunscreen lotion. How effective are SPFs? Your skin is effectively protected if 2 mg/cm 2 layer of sunscreen has been applied. This literally means ½ teaspoon (~3ml) to each arm, to the face and the neck. More than a teaspoon (~6ml) is needed for application to each leg, the chest and back. It should also remain on your skin when you sweat, swim or during long periods of exercise. Ideal SPF for Indian skin? The ideal sunscreens are those that effectively block both UVB and UVA rays, which is done with an SPF of 15 or greater. The ideal sunscreen, therefore, should have a SPF>15 rating and be non-toxic, water-resistant and, importantly, not too expensive! It is noteworthy that a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 blocks about 93% of UVB radiation, while one with an SPF of 30 blocks about 97% of UVB radiation. This difference of 4% may make the difference between an aesthetically pleasing sunscreen and an undesirable one, as products with higher SPF generally tend to be uncomfortable due to the higher concentration of the active ingredients. Immune protection factor (IPF): Ability of sunscreen products to prevent UV-induced immune-suppression. IPF is considered to correlate better with the UVA-protectiveness of a sunscreen than with its SPF. Water-resistant sunscreen: Maintains the label SPF value after two sequential immersions in water for 20 min (40 min). Sun proof Use a separate moisturiser and sunscreen. That is proper protection. Fifteen minutes after moisturising, apply your sunscreen. Best deal A combination of physical and chemical blocking agents. Take care Although not known to be hazardous, the use of sunscreens is not recommended for children younger than three years. (Dr Vikas is a Chandigarh- based dermatologist) |

Par
Excellence Jesse Grewal One of the most difficult shots on the course is a pitch shot; one finds many golfers who try to avoid playing this shot and use the chip shot to roll the ball to the green unless they are forced to play it when there is a bunker between their ball and the green. The key to good pitching is to make a repeatable pure contact with the ball. At impact the club head reaches the bottom of its arc just under the ball. If the club comes in on a shallow arc it would tend to hit the ground behind and catch the ball on the upswing, leading to skulled or topped shots as well as duffed shots. If it comes too steep the divot would be ahead of the ball, causing a low trajectory and inconsistent impact. The divots would get too deep. The quality of contact would depend a lot on the ball position. One of the most common faults in pitching is hitting behind the ball or catching it on the upswing. This fault can start with the wrong image in the player's mind of getting the ball up in the air by trying to scoop it. They try to get the arms to go high on the follow through. As the arms extend away from the body during the follow through, the body falls back or away from the target causing the club head to bottom out behind the ball. This could also happen by choosing a club with less loft, as this will make us try to increase the height of the shot sub-consciously by falling back. Another reason is an excessive slide of the legs on the downswing. This also makes the upper body fall back. If the ball is positioned back in the stance it also leads to the same fault. Try this simple drill to rectify this fault. Take your stance with your weight completely on the left leg (for right-handed golfers). The right toe should just touch the ground with very little weight on it. The ball is positioned in front of the left foot. This is important because when the ball is positioned behind the left foot during this drill, the club will approach on a very steep plane. With your most lofted club make a swing and let the upper body as well as the arms do all the work. If you try to scoop the ball you would lose your balance or fall back as the right leg will not be able to support you. This drill helps in getting the body stable, which is the key to consistent impact. It also stops the legs from sliding. After a few swings, get in to a regular stance but place more weight on your left leg. Keep the ball positioned a little left of centre or centre but not towards the right foot. Swing with the motion being created by the upper body and the arms while the body maintains its centre and does not move laterally either towards or away from the target. This coupled with the correct ball position would lead to consistent pitch shots. stress
buster Renee Singh We can all have a little fun in our lives to make us feel better. Rather, having fun actually needs to be a regular occurrence. There are a few relaxing social activities that one can develop into regular habits and have loads of fun. ''Loosen Up, Lighten Up'… is the mantra to de-stress. If we let ourselves just be and not try to be too analytical or critical of ourselves as well as others, we would definitely be happier. ''He who smiles rather than who rages is always the stronger'…goes a Japanese saying. Target happiness Most people just flow along with life, taking it easy and allowing the flow to take over. This could work for some of us to some extent, but if you really want to enjoy life you have to create a mental self-disciplinary way. Set yourself happiness targets and then live up to them. Lift your mood Enjoying your life is not just a simple indulgence. Getting more of what you enjoy into your life is a great way to bust stress, as it basically leads to a better frame of mind. Laugh it off With the right attitude, stress can easily roll away from your inner self. Cultivate the ability to laugh in the face of stress; this is a great way of enjoying life to the fullest as you are less affected by stress. A good laughter releases endorphins and other healthy hormones that relive stress. Laughter leaves us with a positive and healthy frame of mind. Stress relievers There are many great stress relievers though it is not very easy to stick to them. However, the fun stress relievers are easier to practice on a regular basis. And you also look forward to them. Play games Playing games whether it's with adults or with kids is a great stress reliever. Games keep us in the present. Allow your inner child to play on a regular basis. If you are a parent, just make it a habit to enjoy with your children. Do everything in the day with a playful attitude and watch stress melt away. Book yourself Books provide the right distraction and escape route from stress. We can spend time with them at our own convenience and at our own leisure. Gardening space Bonding with nature is a great way of re-connecting with yourself! Beautifying your space helps in beating stress. Artistic note Rediscover your artistic side. Doodling, painting and sketching help you express yourself; unleash the bottled up emotions from within. Friendly ties This is one of the most relaxing practices. It is only with your friends that you can let your hair down and just be yourself. Tell jokes One can forward messages that are funny and these make you chuckle or even laugh. Clear the clutter This may not sound like a fun activity but less clutter would mean less stress in the environment, which helps ease your mood. Remain in present Basing yourself firmly in the present moment helps in destressing. There is a long list of things that can help you beat the stress. See what appeals to you and just go for it! it’s rocking You saw Shraddha Kapoor in Aashiqui 2, the songs of which topped the Bollywood charts, making it one of the most successful musical films in the last five years. This time, she will be seen in yet another romantic drama, Ek Villain, the musical quality of which is somewhat similar to her pervious film. Garnering much popularity for its subtle romantic tracks, the film, Ek Villain's song, Banjara, stands out for its musical genius. Sung by Mohammed Irfan, the lyrics of the song have been written by Mithoon, who is also the music director of the film. Good lyrics I really love this song. It is very soothing and has beautiful lyrics. I like the music and the video is good as well. Navnidh Singh, employee at a private firm Well shot I am really fond of this song, especially the lyrics. It is amazing. Also, I really like the way the song has been shot. The quality of the song owes much to the way they have blended the intense, emotional lyrics with a melodious tune. Jattanbir Singh, agriculturist Very relatable The best thing about this song is its lyrics, especially the chorus, which makes it so relatable and evokes a beautiful romantic vibe, which feels almost like love. others, will provide inputs to the film's team to lend authenticity to the film since it deals with the story of each and every player who contributed to the team's victory. When contacted, Sanjay confirms the news, saying, "Yes, my producer Vishnu Induri who is also the brainchild behind the celebrity cricket league, is currently in talks with all the players. They will start the required paperwork soon. I'm getting into the pre-production of the film right now, so I won't be able to reveal more details." Sources close to the director tell us that he has already met Kapil to get more feedback on his script. "I did meet Kapil Paaji with regards to the script. Spot on
Bollywood actor-producer and soccer enthusiast John Abraham, who will play footballer Sibdas Bhaduri in 1911, says the biopic is very close to his heart as it is based on his favourite game.
Bhaduri captained Mohun Bagan in the historic 1911 IFA Shield Final, where they defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment with a score of 2-1 to become the first Asian team to win the competition. 1911 will be directed by Shoojit Sircar. "Footbal is in my DNA not by design but by passion. I am very happy to make a film on football based on such a legendary footballer. It is a very special film. It is a true story about victory, resilience and freedom," John said. This is the second time the 41-year-old actor will be seen playing a footballer. He has previously played a soccer player in 2007 film Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal, which did not do well at the box office. — PTI
Tough road to fame
Actress Kirsten Dunst would not encourage her children to pursue a showbiz career. Dunst, 32, who is in a relationship with her On The Road co-star Garrett Hedlund, said she struggles with the idea of her future kids wanting to pursue acting.
"I would obviously like them to be happy and if being actors makes them happy, great, I wouldn't stop them. But I wouldn't push them into it. Especially as young kids. Even though it worked out for me, it's still very hard. "I also wouldn't want to bring my kid up in Los Angeles. If I hadn't grown up there, I think I would hate that city. I'm filming in New Orleans at the moment and it reminded me how lovely it is to walk around without being followed by a gang of paparazzi," she said. — PTI

chatter box Aditya Redij is busy these days shooting for Swastik Pictures's new show, Bandhan. In the show, he will be seen playing the role of a forest ranger and has been shooting in a jungle, which, for him has been an exhilarating experience. His wife, Natasha, accompanied him on the sets too.
Action and reaction
Sumeet Raghavan is best known for his comedy acts, which have a different flavour. It's not in your face or loud slap-stick humour, but more of the witty and subtle kinds. The actor is now back with a new show, Badi Door Se Aaye Hain. He talks about the show and more… Tell us about your new show… This new show is out of this world. The concept of the show is new, and though we have seen aliens on Indian television, but this time, we will see them doing something different and that is comedy! The script is hilarious. Also, Aatish Kapadia and JD Majethia, who were earlier seen in Sarabhai, are a part of the show and they are very good at comedy. We have received a fabulous response to a few episodes and the special effects we have used are smooth, unlike the ones that viewers have seen in the past. Comedy seems to be your forte. How do you manage to pull it off? Yes. I have worked towards doing comedy that is more reaction oriented. I like to react to situations and the way I react is very realistic. What do you think of stand up comedy shows and the success of Kapil Sharma's show? I have been a huge fan of Kapil since his entry into comedy in 2007. He deserves to be where he is and gaining success in any genre on television is, I believe, a very good thing. How was it working with Akshay Kumar in the film Holiday? He is very professional and even though he is a star, he does not take his work lightly. That is what I learnt from him. One might tend to relax a bit and get complacent, but not him. Do people still talk to you about Sarabhai? Yes they do. It's heart warming to recieve so much love and appreciation from people for your work. It has set a yardstick for comedy.
Who shall judge?
After Tanishaa Mukerji and Ragini Khanna's exit from Zee Tv's Gangs of Hasseepur, buzz is that Uday Chopra and Emraan Hashmi have been approached to judge the show. While it seems that Uday might be interested, it is unlikely that Emraan will take the offer, as he has to wrap up his film shoots and then attend to his son, who is being treated for cancer abroad.
Act apart: Emraan Hashmi and Uday Chopra
A dramatic leap
In the up and coming episodes of the show, Sasural Simar Ka, Dipika Samson, aka Simar, will be shown dead. Soon, the track of Jwala Devi will wind up and post a two-year long leap, Roli will be seen taking care of Simar's family. However, later it will be revealed that Simar is alive and is with another family, husband, and a two-year-old daughter.
Deadly twist:
Dipika Samson
Worth the while
Bhagyashree, who will be playing a pivotal role in the adaptation of the hit show, Missing, will probably have to wait for a while. The show was supposed to go on air on Star Plus earlier, but now it might be shifted to it's sister channel, Life Ok. The makers, due to its dark subject, wanted the 11pm slot for the show, but Ye Hai Mohobattein is currently being aired at that time and is doing well too, so the makers were left with no choice.
