Hopping on music
Dj Shaan’s music is all about passion, vibe and experience, which cannot be learnt
He was only thirteen when he took to the console and two years later, in 2010, Shaan performed at the Sunburn, Goa, which is one of the most popular electronic dance music (EDM) festivals in India, thereby becoming the youngest Dj in Asia. However, while elaborating on his music genius, Shaan, 18, is a man of few words, rather reticent, but firm and confident as he traces his journey towards becoming a Dj. "I was always interested in music, but I was yet to consciously explore its compositions and technical details until in school, I started playing trombone and that's when it all started," says Shaan, who was in the Chandigarh to perform a gig at the F Bar. Considering that Shaan inherits most of his knowledge and passion for music from his father, Shailendra Singh, inceptor of Sunburn, he was introduced to the console at his residence, post which he did many gigs across the country, including Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore and abroad. "I would take the flights to the desired destinations to do gigs and my father has always been supportive. Perhaps that is the reason that he took me on for Sunburn, which was my first official gig," he smiles. Shaan has performed with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Afrojack, Avicii, David Guetta, Tiesto, Dash Berlin and Micheal Woods, and is currently studying event management in London. Though his constant candidness, coated with sheer honesty, lets the conversation flow quite easily, one is prompted to question him on why he chose not to study music and event management instead. The answer was prompt and frank, "I am not really a sitting in the class and studying something kind of a person and my music is more about experience, passion and vibe, which can neither be taught nor be learnt," he says. When Shaan defines his music framing it in a comfortable dimension of progressive house, he says that he draws much influence from Axwell, who he considers his mentor. He says, "In the name of house music, one gets to hear a lot of reverb and bass. I try to keep these two elements at bay and infuse melody into my tracks, which makes it commercial, yet different and original." He adds that the music scene in India is still oscillating between the talent and commercial platforms available at hand, which seem to be at two extreme ends of exploration, leaving very little opportunity for what he calls, the commercial music.
Future perfect
After having performed at the Minestry of Sound, Shaan is all set to perform at
Tomorrowland, the world's most celebrated and popular EDM Festivals, which is known to have had the finest international Djs perform at the venue. "I am excited and nervous at the same time because I will be the first Indian Dj to perform at Tomorrowland," he says. Also, Shaan will soon be releasing his three singles in the nest month. "One of the single is a collaboration with the Delhi-based progressive brothers and I will also be performing at Sunburn Reload, Chennai, next month on the 14th with Dj Arnej," he shares. Also, Shaan will be performing at the Love Week Festival, Croatia and Marenostrum in Spain.

Of heartache & soothing words
Manpriya Singh Music is cathartic. Period. How else do we know but through the countless break-up songs that take a successful shot at giving words to emotions and some rhythm to the blues. Literally. The list of break-up songs runs long enough to be termed a genre. And why not because break-up might feel a little less painful and the heart might ache a little less when there's Justin Timberlake Crying a River alongside you. Hall of Fame
Although a female territory, the list of
angry break-up ballads surprisingly, packs in a fair number of male voices too.
While boys have just as much right to shed tears but nevertheless we begin with
the ladies first and switch back to Marie Fredriksson of Roxette crying over
lost love almost as if spilt milk, in It Must Have Been Love. There's Mariah
Carey in Love Takes Time, singing some heart breaking lyrics Couldn't see that I
was blind to let you go? I can't escape the pain inside. Cathy's Clown by The
Everly Brothers easily passes as a heartbreak classic with dignified lyrics.
Sinead O' Connor talks of the single most overwhelming feeling after a break-up,
loneliness in his classic Nothing Compares 2 U. Some speak of revenge, others of
indifference, while the rest of plain melancholy. There are a dozen ways of
dealing with a break-up. George Michael's classic Careless Whisper, talks of
never being able to be the same person; I'm never gonna dance again, the way I
danced with you. Nobody Knows by The Tony Rich Project has some old school
loyalists voting the song in. The end of a relationship always spells a
beginning and changes both persons involved inevitably. Fast forward to a
couple of recent commercial hits, there's Rihanna in the very infectious Love
The Way You Lie. The song, that is actually said to be narrated from her
perspective, takes up the issue of violence in relationships. There's Adele's
Rolling In the Deep, with lyrics that talk about what love could have been. It's
as catchy as a heart break song possibly can be. Lady Antebellum in the song
Need You Now hints at another shot of whiskey not working. The song Apologise by
Timbaland scores well on two counts, catchy beats and connecting lyrics. It
talks of a guy not taking lies anymore and refusing to be apologized to. Burn by
Usher speaks of a mutual partition. There a whole lot out there who know that
break-ups can be a good thing too. Kelly Clarkson seems to know it really well
and all the girls who love the song. Country music provides a perfect backdrop
for a heartbreak or getting over it. Tune in to Keith Urban's You'll Think Of
Me. Youngster's take
Among the recent artists, Taylor Swift is known for
narrating her personal experiences in the songs, speaking of most of her exes.
While counting hit singles Adele is quite a queen of break-up singles. Shares
Shubhreet Sangha, M.Com student, "I like Someone Like You by Adele.
Especially for its lyrics that run like Never mind I'll find someone like you, I
wish nothing but the best for you. A perfect ending for a love gone sour. She
adds, "There's Bon Jovi as a bleeding Romeo in Always. I love the song,
again for its soulful music and lyrics." Who says the hardest of emotions
cannot be overcome with laughter? Did we leave out spoofs? Not a commercial
hit but there's I'm Not Crying by Flight Of The Conchords, mocking a break-up.
Of not been crying but only been chopping onions for lasagna. Take some hint. manpriya@tribunemail.com

Plan a meal ahead
Planning to lose weight reinforces that you're committed to change, and it keeps you more accountable. Beginning a weight loss diet is like beginning a journey. Like any other journey, it needs good preparation. Planning your meal ahead helps to beat the temptations and difficulties that we might face, once we attempt to modify our consumption habits and life style. Be loud and clear
Tell the few people closest to you that you are on a diet and, if you're comfortable, spread the word even further. Learn to say NO. Say goodbye to junk food. Self possession
Give priority to your meals. Understand the importance of taking time to enjoy your meals, indoors or out and savoring every bite. Relaxing while eating also gives you a chance to de-stress and clear your mind. Regular meals
Eat mini meals throughout the day that equal the number of calories you need. Think of healthy food only as it is a fuel for the amazing machine, that your body is. Listen to your body
Do not think of food every time you are free. Find other ways to spend your time that do not involve food. Make efforts
Saying goodbye to past failures in a concrete way can help you focus on succeeding this time. Jot down a list of the reasons you didn't lose weight in the past. Reward yourself
Plan a picnic to reward yourself. Prepare a picnic salad using spinach, radishes, shredded carrots, slices of grilled chicken and some nuts for crunch. Dress it up with a lemon and vinaigrette. Plan a cheat food once you reached your target weight, with your favourite junk food. Keep hydrated
Drink more water. Reduce your daily calorie intake by replacing soda, alcohol or coffee with water. Thirst can also be confused with hunger, therefore, by drinking water, you may avoid consuming extra calories. Be accountable
Create accountability for yourself — try keeping a journal to keep track of the food and calories you eat each day. Healthy food choices
Have dark green leafy vegetables and seasonal summer fruits in your diet plan . Plan meals and snacks prepared with little or no added fat, sugar or salt. Prefer home made food
Cook your own meals. Cooking meals at home allows you to control both portion size and what goes in to the food. Have patience
Shed your extra pounds in a planned way, do not make hasty decisions. Aim to lose one to two pounds a week to ensure healthy weight loss. (Renupreet Kaur is diet therapist and obesity expert)

Take charge
Renee Singh I am so stressed. This is a common statement that I hear all the time from people coming into my clinic from all walks of life. Stress seems to overwhelm people in all ages and stages, people from all fields of work, in all generations and every strata of society. The question of course remains as to what is the best way to relieve stress. The answer may be slightly different for everyone. There are stress relieve techniques that are generally more effective than others. Best ways to relieve stress
It is best to assess one's situation by judging one's personality through some self assessment tools and then direct oneself to stress relievers that best fit into one's particular situation. Stress management techniques fall into two categories which is Problem Focused Coping or Emotion Focused Coping Problem focused coping
This aims at eliminating the sources of stress or work with the stressors. Emotion focused coping
The techniques here enable you to become less emotionally reactive to the stressors you face. Or altering the way you experience these situations so that they impact you differently. For most people the best solution to resolving stress is by cutting away those things from our lives that seem to cause us stress. In this way we don't need to alter our responses to any stressors as there are none available in our lives. This may sound very improbable as it is not possible to cut away all stress from our lives. Advantages of emotion focused coping
Emotion focused coping strategies
Meditation
Journaling Allows us to manage our emotions in many ways:
Reframing Allows you to change the way you see the problem. You can trick yourself from being stressed to not being so or pretend your stressors don't exist. It changes your perspective. Positive thinking Being an optimist means finding new and specific ways of perceiving problems. Ways that maximize your power in a situation and keep you in touch with your options. Sushmita: I will certainly get married
Former Miss Universe and actress Sushmita Sen celebrated two decades of winning the Miss Universe title recently. The 38-year-old actress, who shows no signs of aging, celebrated the day by watching Amole Gupte's recently released film Hawaa Hawaai with children. Here she talks about her social work, returning to films, her wedding and much more... Brave souls
We have 100 kids here from CPAA (Cancer Patients Aid Association). Prevention and early detection in cancer is needed and CPAA is doing that in several countries. I think we should help people celebrate their lives. Vote of thanks
I am thankful to India. I feel fortunate to have represented my country at the Miss Universe pageant, 20 years back. Time has flown. I was 18 when I won the crown. I wanted to celebrate these 20 years. I wanted to celebrate life with kids as they teach us how to be brave. Next production
My next production will now depend on the mathematics of the film. If I produce a film it will be of the Vicky Donor genre and budget. I have gone past the stage where I should make a film no matter what. It has to make sense financially. We have the bank now and we are approaching the directors slowly. Team work
Production isn't about me but a team of people who can run them. Acting is about me and that's what I am working on right now. I would like to produce the right scripts. I am not aiming to join the 100 crore club, but aiming for a film that is a clear cut victory for everyone involved. Food for thought
I don't think I should walk with the system. Our society has made this system that graduate at 18, by 22 start panicking to get married and by 27 have your first child. I don't believe in that. Every person's DNA is different. I will certainly get married and for sure, it's going to be a beautiful wedding (Masha allah bahut khoobsurat hogi meri shaadi).
Kim, Kanye say Socialite Kim Kardashian and singer Kanye West walked down the aisle in Florence, Italy. West's representative has confirmed the news. "Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were married in a private ceremony in the presence of family and friends in Florence, Italy," a website quoted West's representative as saying. A source said that the ceremony would be a "princess fairy tale for Kim," adding, "Kanye thought of every detail." Kim and West, who are parents to 11-month-old North West, will reportedly attend a friend's wedding next and will go for their honeymoon sans North, said a source. This is the first marriage for West. Kim was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas.

A prank gone awry
Varun Dhawan and newcomer Sidharth Gupta played a prank on Nargis Fakhri. The prank was planned as a part of a reality show but it scared Nargis so much that she fainted. Poor girl.
The X appeal
Looks like the X-Men fever has gripped audiences and B-Town. After Ranbir, Shahid and Katrina have been spotted at X-Men screening. Now looks like B-Town has got another X-Men connection. Action hero Vidyut Jammwal received this image on his official Facebook page from a fan who called him "India's Wolverine". The images do have a striking commonality. Who knows, maybe this successful franchise could have Jammwal essay the Indian version of Wolverine. For now, he's enjoying being India's new age action hero!
Saif’s nap routine
Saif Ali Khan would have to shoot during night and early morning hours for Humshakals in London. So he would take a nap in the famous black taxis over there instead of going to his vanity van. That is because his van would be parked far away.
Putting academics first
Kangna Ranaut has opted out of Sujoy Ghosh's Durga Rani Singh to complete her screen writing course in New York. Now that is some dedication.
At the box-office
In a shocking turn of events, Rajinikanth starrer Kochidaiyaan has got a very poor response at the box office in Mumbai and some shows have been cancelled due to poor
turnout.
Cheryl’s latest pursuits
Former Girls Aloud star Cheryl Cole has sparked dating rumours with French businessman Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini. Believed to have been dating for a month, the couple were spotted together at the Cannes Film Festival celebrations, reported a publication. The businessman's luxurious Cosy Box restaurant is reportedly the place where the pair made their coupling public during the Cannes Film Festival. A role with a difference
Playing a complex character is something that Geetanjali Tikekar enjoys. She plays a submissive, dominated woman Anjali in Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon 2. She talks about her role and the message the character sends out. What do you like the most about your character? It's different from other characters on TV. I don't think I can play such a role again. Emoting on such a range is exhausting. Once I pack up, I am too tired and numb, so I simply sit quietly when I go back home without music or phone to get back to myself. Your character has shades of grey yet it is submissive. Yes. It is quite complex. Initially she was shown as a harsh and rude person but later people realised that it was a mask that Anjali was hiding behind. She exposes Niranjan's character by being bad in front of the family. She cares about her family so much that she lets Niranjan be horrible to her. What message do you think the show and your character sends out to women? The reason we are showing this extreme version is to show people that there is a way. Many times victims of domestic abuse never realise that they are being abused. They feel this is the way of the world. Through the show, we are educating and entertaining people, making them realise that they should fight injustice. Is playing a mother to someone your age tough? It is not tough as I have played a mother to actors of my age before as well. I would love to play my age but now I think I am slotted for the role of mothers on TV. How tough is it to manage home and work? It's actually about balancing your life. All thanks to my mother-in-law that I can manage my home and work. She takes care of my son for which I am thankful to her.
On the go
Playing a baba on Zee TV's Gangs of Hasseepur, Rajkumar Prashad says that he has struggled a lot to reach where he is today. Starting his journey almost 6 years ago with the impersonation of Baba Ramdev, Rajkumar has perfected the art of mimicking a lot of famous personalities such as Nana Patekar, Paresh Rawal and Lalu Prasad Yadav. Talking about his journey, he said, "A few years ago, I heard about a show that was auditioning fresh talent. Being a resident of Jamshedpur, I took a few days off and travelled to Mumbai to audition for the role and to my surprise, I was glad to have bagged it."
When asked about his knack of mimicking personalities, he said, "I used to mimic my teachers and my principal in school and my friends used to love it. Slowly I started observing all these actors I would see on television and mimic their style of acting. I started with Nana Patekar and slowly moved on to mimicking others as well." Having lost his father really early in life, he has come a long way from fending for the entire house to now making a living for his family. Currently working as an RJ in his hometown, Jamshedpur, he has a show dedicated to himself where he mimics various local famous personalities on the show. Hoping to get a daily soap soon, he vies to make it big in Bollywood as well but wants to take one step at a time. Do not miss, Gangs of Hasseepur, Every Saturday and Sunday at 8 PM, Only on Zee TV! The name game
Veebha Anand is excited about her upcoming show Humko Ishq Ne Maara on MTV because of her character's name: Navya Naveli, which incidentally, is also the name of Amitabh Bachchan's granddaughter. "I am excited beyond explanation to play a character named after Mr Bachchan's granddaughter. We share nothing else in common other than the name. My character hails from Bihar. The show is about the journey of two girls and their love, passion and break-ups." And while other actors end up playing the older characters, 22-year-old Veebha will play an 18-year-old. "Having always been in saas-bahu sagas, this show is a welcome change." She is also playing Subhadra in Mahabharat. She says, "I am getting good response from my fans they tweet on twitter about my character and am getting a very positive response."
In a league of their own
Sangram Singh recently met the Great Khali who was in India after almost three years. The two had a long chat about Big Boss, a reality show both were seen in. Both wrestlers want to start a wrestling league in India.
Of twists & turns
In the upcoming week on Doli Armaano Ki, Samrat will bring his proxy wife to meet his foreign delegates. But she will misbehave and put everyone off. Samrat then will realise that Urmi can't be replaced in his life.
The next big step
Indira Krishnan is enjoying her acting stint not just on TV but also in films. Slotted in motherly roles, the actress will now be seen in a film playing mother to Sonakshi Sinha. Though she says she would love to do a negative role, she also feels playing a mom means she has a longer career. Priority call
Karan Tacker was apparently approached to do Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's latest season. But he couldn't take it up due to other commitments. He is busy with hosting Halla Bol and hopes to catch up with the new season of the dance reality show, which will air soon.

A catchy whistle
For those of you who like shaking a leg to the Bollywood beats, the recent track from the movie, Heropanti, titled Whistle Baja, is your tune for this week. Sung by Manj and Nindy Kaur, the music of the song has been given by Manj Musik while the lyricist is Raftaar. Woven in the flute loop of the good old signature tune of Jackie Shroff's career-making film, Hero, the song is peppy and contemporary. Good ol' tune
I really like the song, more so because it has a fragment of Jackie Shroff's movie, Hero's tune and his son, Tiger dancing to the same old tune in the movie titled, well, Heropanti. The song has a good vibe to it. Gurpreet Kaur, student, Microbiology department, PU Cashing on nostalgia
It's a catchy song on a very catchy tune. I like the way the singers have elaborated on the tune and added a peppy feel to the nostalgia that the tune brings in. A perfect Bollywood mashup! Kiranjot Kaur, Private bank employee Desi magic
I like the song very much and the beats, the music and the lyrics. It's a perfect desi club song that forces one to get to the dance floor. Jaskaran Singh, student Manipal
