SSIET techies come up with rescue robot

Dera Bassi, May 25
Six students of the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology (SSIET) have come up with a robot to save precious lives of the kids falling into uncovered boreholes.

Under the guidance of their mentors — Prof Parminder Kaur and Prof Sandeep Kaur Saini — students of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Semester VIII, namely Gurpreet Singh, Himanshu Sharma, Gagandeep Dhiman, Harmanpreet Singh, Manoj Malik, and Amit put their innovations together and developed a semi-automatic 'rescue robot' as their final year's project.

Briefing about the robot, the budding engineers said the robot was a programmable multi-functional electro-mechanical battery operated system with a set of modules, namely robotic unit, USB camera, micro controller, displays and some sensors, to monitor environmental conditions inside the borehole.

About the robot's functioning, the students said it goes inside the borehole (pipe) by adjusting its flexible limbs using a switch pad. The video camera mounted on the robot keeps providing information about the proximity of the target — ‘trapped baby’. On reaching close to the target, the robot's arms grip the target and under a semi-automatic control, bring the 'catch' out of the borehole.

"The entire process is economical and saves a lot of time as against the operation launched by government to rescue children trapped in uncovered bore bells," the students claimed.

The model could be rectified and modified to make it a commercially viable product so that it could be utilised as human-safety equipment.

Prof Avtar Singh has offered financial resources to make the technology perfect at the Technology Incubation Centre of the SSIET.

The scorching heat made the spectators survive hard. However, a few hours later dusty storm and then the cloudy sky offered a relief to the cricket fans.

The Kings XI Punjab started the evening on a good note and after elected to bowl first restricted the Daredevils on a low total.

Coming to bat second, the home team received early jitters. However, Manan Vohra, stood like a strong pillar for his teams' batting line-up. Making it more lenient, Manan played at a slow pace to ensure that his team should reach the winning total with ease. After their 7-wicket win over Delhi Daredevils today, they will leave the city for play-off matches on Monday.

Crowd support for local youth

Chandigarh's lad Manan Vohra, made the spectators to tap on their feet, with scoring a well made 47 runs off 38 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes. However, he fell short of a half century when Imran Tahir bowled him. He was given the man of the match award for his major contribution to the team's win.

"It's my home ground, so it's always fun to be here and make runs. I was just waiting for my turn and, so far, performed as per my team's expectations,"said Manan, after receiving the man of the match trophy.

"He is a great player and deserves to be in the Team India. The way he played today shows that he is capable of playing under pressure, while chasing the target. Hope, he will continue to play like this during the play-off matches," a spectator said.

"The 20-year old was among the two uncapped players who were retained by the IPL franchise. Earlier, he forced his way into the Ranji Trophy squad with three back-to-back hundreds in the BCCI's U-25 tournament followed by a crucial role in helping Punjab qualify for the quarterfinals by scoring a 187 against Jharkhand in the last league match of the Ranji Trophy last season," he added.

Sidelights of the match

* The last match of the IPL seventh season at the PCA Stadium witnessed a huge turnout.

* Pleasant climate added flavour to spectators' mood.

* Punjab Police officials continue to entertain VIP kids by providing them smooth access to the stadium.

* Minor short-circuit at Level-I of the stadium made the audiences at the VIP block suffer for around 20 to 25 minutes.
