Abohar
19 booked in assault case:
The police have booked 19 persons who had allegedly attacked brick-kiln workers at Kikkarkhera village. The victims told the police that the miscreants tried to outrage the modesty of women workers, besides injuring them with sharp weapons. The accused farmers had stormed the dwellings of the workers on Tuesday night, alleging the workers trespassed their fields.

Illicit liquor seized:
The district police have seized around 90,000 millilitres of illicit liquor in two separate incidents. The Sadar Police at a check point near Kotla Gaunspur intercepted a car and seized 53,250 ml of liquor. The accused, Sohan Lal of Mohala Kamalpur, managed to flee. In another case, a Theenda village resident was held with 37,500 ml of liquor.

Cricket trials
: The Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) will conduct trials to select probables (U-25) for the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament at Arya College on May 18 from 8.30 am. Vinod Chitkara, general secretary, LDCA, said players born on or after September 1, 1989, were eligible for the trials.— OC

New course introduced: The GHG Khalsa Group of Institutions, Gurusar Sadhar, is starting a three-year diploma course in medical laboratory technology from this year. Students can apply for the course after matriculation. — TNS

Man commits suicide
: A man allegedly committed suicide by hanging with a tree at Nuhon colony near here on Wednesday. The deceased, Ajay Kumar (47), was employed with the Railways. A suicide note was found from his residence in which he has not blamed any one for his death, the police said.

Sangrur
Wheat procurement highest:
Sangrur district tops the state in wheat procurement till May 13. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Kavita Singh said here today that 10.06 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of wheat had been procured till May 13 in the district. Last year, 9.51 lakh MT of wheat was procured. The DC said about Rs 1,288 crore had been paid to the farmers for their wheat so far. "In all, 9.55 lakh MT of procured wheat has been lifted," she said.
