Cricket craze, virtually
The Indian Premier League has spawned as many as 500 mobile apps where cricket crazy fans can predict the winning team, highest scoring batsman. And that's not all; you can stream live IPL matches on your smartphone, check out the scoreboard and also know the batting line-up, who got out and who is coming up next!
Ashima Batish

Glenn Maxwell hits a flurry of sixes and Sidhuisms fly around - 'Madmax is an apt name for this freak', "Breaking News: DNA Report Confirms Glenn Maxwell Ancestor Were From Gujarat" These, however, aren't born and delivered inside the usual commentary box; the self-professed commentators invent them on mobile apps strictly meant to celebrate IPL. There are over 500 such mobile applications accessible and available on Android, i-Phones and Windows operating systems catering to cricket fans. The applications range from IPL-inspired games to information about scores, players, teams to discussion forums where game enthusiasts discuss anything and everything about cricket.

Information net

If information is what applications are meant for, then there are plenty serving the purpose. They make it possible for you to watch the matches live as they are happening; the only compromise you have to make is with the screen size. And then you can delve deeper into details, about teams' players, their batting and balling statistics, match schedules, Twitter feeds, cap holders…"In fact, a few are so comprehensive with the information part that the experience of watching IPL on the phone is better than watching it on a 42-inch wide screen," says Vishal Gupta, a Chandigarh-based restaurateur and a cricket enthusiast. He has downloaded IPL T20 Addicts, IPL 7 Notifier (which sends him a reminder when the match is about to begin and much more) on his phone. To enhance the experience, there are apps that support 3-D graphics.

Opinion base

There are applications that ensure watching IPL on the phone is an experience similar to watching cricket with the family. You can comment, commend, debate, discuss or criticise players on the applications, which are social networking sites rolled into television. "We conceptualised the application last year. Before the season began, we already had a base of 50,000 users," says Rabi Gupta, co-founder of I-couch, one such application. It helps members connect instantly, share pictures from the day's match and comment, making IPL viewing an interactive process. Another interactive application is IPLTweet …Realtime. It might be struggling with the user base as on now, but the concept is a winner. The app aims at streaming all the IPL-related tweets on this forum. It's also the app for Twitter shy people. You want to tweet about David Miller's explosive batting - the app sure helps you.

All game

The games inspired from cricket are as interesting as the source of inspiration. Take MatchUp Cricket for example. It's a gaming application that facilitates competing with other interested users. "It's like playing IPL in your own circle. You predict every move in the game and win points in return," informs Aseem Sachdeva, a Chandigarh- based businessman, who downloaded the app just before the season seven began. Since it's a time-bound game, he hopes that the application developers next pick the Football World Cup and keep the app active. On similar lines is IPL 2014 Cricket Genious, where too you guess the winning team, highest scoring batsman, highest wicket-taker, man of the match for all IPL matches, among other things. With a user base of 50,000 people, the app is one of the most popular in the category of gaming apps.

Fun sake

Many mobile apps targeting IPL only have entertainment on the agenda. For information, these direct you towards other serious apps. The Loudest Cheer provides with a variety of audio cheers that you use to cheer for your favourite team. Cricket IPL Ringtones celebrates the music tunes composed for the game.

Go with the flow
Siddharth & Gaurav, the DJ duo from Delhi believes in passion and things worth doing
Manpriya Singh

Passion doesn't believe in placing opportunity costs on anything in life. The fact that he could have spent his crucial years doing anything else doesn't matter. The fact that he spent his crucial years doing what he loves, counts. For Siddharth Sharma of the Delhi- based duo comprising DJ NDS and DJ Blue, a degree in aeronautical engineering has been put on stake and so has been the management course in business administration. A clear case of passion being precious. Rather priceless. "We started our own recording studio six years back. Now during the weekends we are traveling, doing gigs and performing at shows and the weekdays are spent making music," he shares hours before his gig at The Blue Blazer. It's a life he has always wanted to live with a little bit of more music and acknowledgement thrown in.

"I have always been a good listener. I tried my hand at production and did my research on the record labels and functioning of the industry.I knew that this is what I wanted to do."

Meanwhile, it's a second stint with the city beautiful. "I was in Chandigarh before in 2009 for an EDM festival. Back then, since the crowd was niche, it was great," he shares while looking forward to playing some of his well- known tracks Alpha and Contra, which were supported by the world renowned DJ Armin Van Buuren. "I will also be playing some of our underground music."

The duo has also performed some exceptional opening set for mainstream artists like Bobina, Myon and Shane 54 among others. When not playing to get people on the dance floor or taking requests, music it is for unwinding too, though it is great switch in the genres and artists. "I like listening to Drum and Bass and bands like Noisia, Sire Beats and Hardwell." Coming up from the duo is an album comprising of six tracks with 2 videos. "The album should be out by December this year. It is an experimental project where we have taken Indian sounds with instruments like flute, tabla, sitar and given an international dance music treatment to them."

His own music...
Playback singer KK's voice touches a chord in every listener’s heart. Music to him is a treasure that lies deep within…
Gurvinder Singh

"I am going to take a break, move out of Mumbai for a month to work on my music album," says singer Krishnakumar Kunnath popularly known as KK. It has been just him and music, right since childhood. He has been a loner and completely dedicated to music. So much so that he didn't like the idea of learning to sing in a class. So, he learnt absorbed and inculcated music on his own, where every music record, cassette and CD became his teacher. All were his inspiration, whether it was Kishore Kumar, Billie Joel, Lata Mangeshkar or Michael Jackson…. Even now, he doesn't go to parties, he likes to work alone with his music. It has been this learning from music that defines his journey and rise as a singer.

Even to sing a song, he lets the emotion hit him, as he absorbs and feels the lyrics to emote the feeling while singing. "You let your head, mind, bones and skin feel the emotion before singing," says the singer. This is perhaps one of the reasons for the success of his one of the most popular songs Tadap Tadap from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

Comparing the experience of recording in the studio and performing live, he adds, "Both are fulfilling in their own way. In a studio, you are giving birth to music and creating for eternity. There are no second chances or re-do's, after the music is out. So, you give all of your energy and conviction. At the stage, it is sharing what creates fun," he shares.

He emerged in the music scene with his popular music album Pal. The next music album Humsafar came after about nine years in 2008. "After my first music album, playback singing took precedence," he says. "I wanted to bring something different and I came up with this album," he says. It is this zest to bring out some music of his own again, that he is working on another music album, he says.

Talking about independent music, KK feels, "Independent music did take a backseat as film music took over and became popular. But it is coming back. A lot of new music, down South, rock bands, stage performances are happening now, which is marking a comeback of independent music," he says hoping there are more platform for independent music.

His son Nakul has definitely taken after him when it comes to music. "He is dedicated to music. He intends to become a producer and is pretty passionate and dedicated," says the proud father.

On the waterfront
Sukhmani

A simple addition of a water feature in the garden can change the dynamics of your landscape area. From shallow ponds, pools to fountains, water bodies can enhance the aesthetics of your garden.

Water chemistry

A perfect water body is the one that is in balance. Many organisms like algae, micro-organisms and water-plants grow in water. These in turn support aquatic insects and fish. When all these elements are well-supported by the volume of water, a healthy ecosystem is achieved. Imbalance occurs when too much of one thing is added to an aquatic system.

Design wise

There are different types of water features such as ponds, pools, waterfalls, etc that can be added to your garden. Decide which one will be apt for your home and take into consideration the following -

Space available

Budget and Design of the existing landscape

Water features can be designed in geometric shapes keeping in mind the architecture of the house. In case you find it too complicated, a basic rectangular pool would suffice. Either ways, the intended purpose of the water feature is to beautify the landscape.

Place it well

The placement of the water feature is very important. The size and structure of the water feature depends on the area available. Ideally, it should be placed where it gets direct sunlight. Most flowering aquatic plants need at least half a day of sun in order to bloom. It would be better to avoid areas with trees as their leaves can make cleaning the water feature a daunting task. Small water features should also be located where they can be best enjoyed. Patios, seating areas, entry spaces, courtyards, and interior window views are ideal locations. Access to electricity, water spigots, and cleaning equipment are additional practical considerations.

Clean & clear

A water feature needs to be cleaned once in a week. If you are planning to rear some fish or plants, make sure the pH of the water is maintained. Don't over feed the fish as it will lead to the growth of algae. Algae are an important and vital part of any water system, but excess of it can deprive other organisms of oxygen. The best way to avoid green water is to reduce the amount of nutrients entering the system.

Wrap up on a sweet note
Amarjot Kaur

While wraps and rolls undoubtedly make for a wholesome snack or on-the-go lunch or dinner, the chefs at Café@JW know well how to mix the flavours of innovation that go beyond the parameters of exploring food's relationship with hunger. The restaurant launched the Wrap and Roll festival that serves on the platter various styles of different cuisines, all wrapped and rolled to unfold a great experience.

Ranging from Asian to Oriental, the fiesta promises to bring out adventurous interpretations on classic wraps and rolls in a cyclic rotation of Asian, Western, Indian and dessert wraps. "The festival offers a healthy option while listing the choices between cold, deep fried, baked, poached, steamed, at room temperature, or hot wraps. Also, we have an assortment of vegetarian and non-vegetarian wraps to choose from," says chef Tilak Halder.

The dishes on board include Xinjiang pancake stuffed with sautéed lamb, chilli and cumin pan fried roll with condiments like sichuan chilli sauce, bell pepper julienne red and yellow both, spring onion julienne, coriander sticks.

Also, Asian wrap on the menu is nori sheet wrapped sushi counter, wasabi, and soya sauce which is a cold roll, while the western menu includes wine leaf rice parsley dolmas, lemon juice and olive oil. With grilled vegetable, apricot cream cheese pin wheels, smoked tomato and chilli dip is a pan fired and delicious vegetarian wrap. However, with whatever little room one can spare for dessert wraps, the choices are immense, including strawberry Swiss roll, mascarpone cheese and cherry wrap, crepe suzette, sweet mango rice rolls.

Doc Talk
Who nose?
Non-surgical nose job has the advantage of no downtime, no pain and virtually no risk
Dr Vikas Sharma

Beautiful nose should have the right size and shape and should be in harmony with the rest of the face. Surgical nose correction (rhinoplasty) has been one of the most popular facial surgeries. However, nose surgery has the limitations of longer healing time and inherent risks like infection, implant extrusion and risk of anaesthesia.

Non-surgical no-knife nose job using injectable fillers has emerged as a revolutionary procedure in a variety of aesthetic issues of nose that smoothes out bumps without surgery. Non-surgical nose job has the advantage of no downtime, no pain and virtually no risk.

The ideal nose should have the following characteristics:

Length 1/3rd of the face length.

Dorsal lines should be straight and uninterrupted.

Width of the nose should be same as intercanthal width (between inner corners of eyes).

Starting point of the nose should be at the level of upper eyelash line.

Nose-lip angle should be 90 degrees in men and 100-110 degree in females.

Dorsum should have a gentle slope from root of nose till tip without any hump.

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a medical procedure in which injectable fillers, most commonly hyaluronic acid ones are used to alter and shape a person's nose without invasive surgery. The procedure fills in depressed areas on the nose, lifting the angle of the tip or smoothing the appearance of bumps on the bridge. Non-surgical rhinoplasty is an augmentation procedure, so a cosmetic procedure and is not used to correct functional problems with the nose, such as breathing difficulties.

Because the nose is the anchor-feature of the face, an aesthetically proportionate nose balances the physiognomic features of a person. Non-surgical correction is considered for patients with a treatment-suitable aesthetic defect. Although the procedure is usually performed for aesthetic purposes, it can also be used to correct some birth defects. Because the procedure is not invasive, bruising and swelling are minimal. The procedure is not meant to decrease nose size, although it can make the nose appear smaller by making it look straighter. It is frequently used to increase the height and definition of the nasal bridge, as well as augmenting other precisely defined areas of the nose.

The filler-injection technique allows for:

The augmentation of a flat nasal bridge (depressed dorsum).

The added projection of the nasal tip.

Correction of retracted columella.

Small reduction of nostril size.

Enhancing a retracted anterior nasal spine.

The enhancement of a retracted maxilla lateral to the pyriform (pear-shaped) aperture to displace the anterior plane.

The elevation of a saddle nose deformity caused by a failed primary rhinoplasty.

Traumatic injury.

The procedure for injecting and placing the soft-tissue filler typically takes 10 to 30 minutes to perform after an initial 15 minutes of numbing. After the procedure, the patient can typically resume normal life activities immediately. Modern injectable soft-tissue filler agents include:

Hyaluronic acid: A safe and non- allergenic temporary filler that lasts for six to ten months.

Calcium hydroxyapatite: A calcium based, non-allergenic filler that is sturdier than hyaluronic acid and lasts for 10 to 14 months.

Polymethylmethacrylate: A permanent filler made from microscopic surgical plastic beads.

Advantages

Lunchtime procedure

Very low complication rate

Virtually painless

No downtime

Reversible

Limitation

Not all kinds of nose changes can be made by fillers. Filler injections can augment or reshape but cannot reduce the size of nose.

STAR TRACK
Family talk with Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri Dixit may be happily married with children but she still remains the sweetheart of the nation. Her sons are adorable and she is blessed to have a husband like Sriram Nene, who supported her comeback dreams and relocated to India. She talks about her family, living in the US, relocating to India and much more.

A wonderful husband

I keep bouncing off fitness ideas to my husband Sriram Nene. Since he's from the medical field, his knowledge is great. But he loves to eat and luckily never puts on weight. As compared to him, I need to stay conscious about my diet. We often work out together at the gym. I don't have a personal trainer. There are trainers in the gym and I take their help. I'm constructing a gym at home right now.

Of dance and exercise

In our country we love to dance while we find exercise boring. So we have found this great way for people to enjoy their exercise. I told my husband that dance is a form of exercise, just like cardio. So he thought why not create a video. People already know the steps in my songs like Chane ke khet Mein or Aaja Nachle. So I took those iconic movements but instead of making them 'dancey', I conceptualised them like an exercise. We combined dance with exercise to create dancercise. Dancercise is a cardio exercise. You can check it out on my website.

Some family fun

My children (Arin and Ryan) don't need to exercise because they are running around all day. They play tennis and squash and also go for swimming. In the US, they used to play soccer. There were so many types of water sports there. I also send them to Taekwondo classes. I used to stay back and watch. Then I thought why sit idle for an hour, why not learn it? They had a family class where parents and children could learn together. I joined that class and started learning Taekwondo.

On the food habits

Children run around all day so their body must get adequate nutrition. Sometimes, it gets difficult to make them eat. You have to make the food interesting or understand their psychology. For example, my elder son Arin can't eat if you put all the food together on his plate. So I make it interesting for him and serve him small portions at a time. As for my younger son Ryan, he has no issues. He's a happy-go-lucky kid. If we go on a long trip, I keep nutribars with me. Nutribars also accompany me on my shoots because often you don't get healthy food and they come in handy.

US vs. India

People are more disciplined in the US. Here, we have social issues. For example, if you are going over to someone's place for dinner, you first come back from work, freshen up and then go. The traffic here is so bad that by the time you reach your host's place, it is 9.30 pm. Then you chit-chat and eat only later. That's why we have so many medical issues. In the US, everyone is done with their dinner by 8:30 pm and then they sit and chit-chat.

Selena Gomez done with Justin Bieber?

Singer-actress Selena Gomez has reportedly moved on from her former boyfriend Justin Bieber as she is tired of his errant behaviour.

The 21-year-old singer and Bieber, 20, sparked reconciliation rumours earlier this year, when they were spotted hanging out together on a number of occasions, reported a publication. "Selena doesn't care who Justin is dating. All she knows is she's done with him and his immature behaviour. He's all talk and no action," a source said. — PTI

Boy on a roll

Rumour has it that the Bhatts are mighty impressed with actor Sidharth Malhotra and if all goes well, he might be seen in the sequels of their popular horror series of Raaz and Murder.

Hide and seek, with Varun’s tattoo

Varun Dhawan recently wrapped up Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and after this may star in his brother, Rohit Dhawan's next directorial venture.

Meanwhile, he has been appointed as the new face of a cosmetic product. He was recently spotted at the launch event, sporting what seems to be a new tattoo on the left side of his neck.

KJo to the rescue
Former model Rhea Pillai recently filed a complaint against her live-in partner and ace tennis player Leander Paes for allegedly evicting her out of their Carter Road home in Mumbai. Meanwhile, filmmaker Karan Johar defended Rhea saying that she is the most loyal partner and a wonderful mother. The couple has a daughter.

Running behind time
Buzz is that Sajid Nadiadwala's directorial debut Kick, starring Salman Khan, might be delayed. The film may miss its Eid release date. Apparently, one 40-day schedule of the film is pending and the post-production might also get delayed.

Shadows of the past
Shahid Kapoor reportedly refused an offer to attend a TV show along with Priyanka Chopra as he didn't want to share screen space with her.

Cannes calling

Actor Gautam Gulati of Diya Aur Bati fame is all set to make his debut at Cannes Film Festival with the screening of Coward (Darpok), which will be held at France from 14th to 25th May. Unlike his contemporary actors, Gautam Gulati went on to exhibiting his acting skills on the international platform. "Yes, I am starring in Coward and am also going to France to attend the screening of the movie. This is a perfect inception for me to invade in movies," says Gautam Gulati. He started his journey as an actor with theatre and trained himself in dance from celebrated choreographer Shiamak Davar.

Speckled by Balaji Production House, he was spotted by soap opera queen, Ekta Kapoor. Exploring his credentials, actor Gautam Gulati grabbed the golden chance and worked under the banner for 3 years where he became contempt and experienced every aspect of acting. Going by his vast fan following, he absolutely justified the character of Vikram in Diya Aur Baati Hum.

Talking about his journey Gautam says, "I come from a simple family, which has no association with Bollywood whatsoever, but it was my passion for this art, which made me pursue acting." The stunning actor wants to don a perfectly fabricated Tuxedo and walk the red carpet.

Getting enlightened

Actress Kajal Jain, who plays the role of Yashodhara in BK Modi's show, Budhha, feels that her character has taught her a lot. "Budhha taught me a lot, right from lighting to camera angles. Also, it is very challenging to play the role of princess Yashodhara as one has to really focus and concentrate. Recently, when Siddharth went to search himself in his spiritual trail, even Yashodhara followed that path. She will now be seen wearing saffron clothes and sleeping in the floor."

Kajal also shares how she was moved when Siddharth left everything in search of wisdom. "We were all emotionally moved, thinking of how a young boy can leave everything. That is when you know the inner truth of life," she adds.

Talking about her on and off screen chemistry with Himanshu Soni Kajal says, "We are good friends and off screen, we really like pulling each others leg."

Scaring the living daylights out of Paresh

In the ongoing track of the show, Chidiya Ghar, the ghost of a gangster, living amongst them as a paying guest will be seen troubling the family members. During the shooting of the ghost sequence, some members of the crew tricked Paresh into believing that a ghost sighting had happened some years back in the nearby area. Paresh did not believe them initially, but when all the crew kept discussing the same thing, it scared Paresh out of his senses. The crew then revealed to him that they had tricked him to get even and all of them had a hearty laugh. "I even told the production team to shoot at daytime instead of night as I was truly frightened. It was funny that I was so easily fooled into believing them," said Paresh Ganatra.

Exploring Russia

History TV18's new show, Russia on Four Wheels, is a series comprising two massive road-trips across the world's largest country- Russia, with its colossal expanse, scattered habitations and extreme weather conditions, which makes for a conspicuously challenging and exasperating road expedition.

Yet, Justin Rowlatt and Anita Rani take up the challenge of driving thousands of miles in three weeks to find out how far Russia has left its Cold War past behind and where the country is headed in the future. They begin their journey in Sochi, the Black Sea resort home to the 2014 Winter Olympics - the most expensive games ever. Anita discovers Russia in a Kombat - a Russian built luxury armoured plated bling machine - her oligarch tank, whereas Justin heads east into 'old' Russia, in a slightly battered Soviet-built UAZ 'jeep' first designed in the 1940s for the Red Army.

Starting May 17th, the show will air at 8 am and 4:30 pm only on History TV.

Bringing back the madness

It was time for some madness on the sets of Sony Entertainment Television's show, Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, as the dashing cricketer Shoaib Akhtar made an appearance on the show. The pace bowler showed off his entertainment skills and clicked a 'selfie' with judges Anu Malik, Farah Khan and hosts Mona Singh and Krushna Abhishek.

Lost, but found by Kapil
In Surat for a show, Kapil Sharma expected a crowd of 5000, but was surprised to see about 25,000 people instead. In the rush, he happened to spot a kid, who was lost and separated from her parents. He ensured that the kid was safely returned to her parents.

Back with a bang
Ami Trivedi of Papad Pol, will soon be seen in Optimystix Production's Pritam Pyaare Aur Woh, which will be telecast on Sab TV. She will play the role of a banjaran from Rajkot, who falls in love with Paresh Bhatt and wants to marry him. She had taken a break from television due to her baby.
