Without arms, Jagwinder is turning fortunes in his favour
Chandigarh, May 11 In the absence of his arms, he eats his food, performs painting, works on computer and do other things by using his feet. A resident of Patiala, he hogged the limelight when he participated in the 25-km para-boys challenge of the Chandigarh State Cycling Championship, here, today when he claimed the first place. The cycling enthusiast started paddling at his native Patran village, near Patiala, in 2012 after watching a cycling event on television. Much to his family's surprise, Jagwinder bought his own cycle and started paddling down to Patiala thrice a week. Slowly with support of his friends and family, he started participating in competitions and begun his journey to become a successful cyclist. At present, he claims to paddle down over 90 km, to and fro, on a regular basis to maintain his fitness. His very next aim ais to improve his timing. He is looking ahead to buy a professional racing-cycle. "Things were quite difficult for him at the initial stage. At the age of 20, with the support of his family members and well-wishers, I learnt paddling like a five-year-old child. It was really tough to get up after every fall. After completing my higher education and my diploma, I was uncertain about my future. But cycling has given me a new hope to survive and shine," said Jagwinder. Jagwinder, who falls under the cent percent category, has many awards in academics to his credit. He won three prizes at a state-level painting competition and also bagged one national-level merit certificate for making a foot-made painting. He was awarded with the honours during his diploma days. He completed his higher education with 78 per cent marks. Now, Jagwinder is only concentrating on achieving fame in cycling. "Rakesh Mohindro, a local cycling coach, has seen me performing and invited me to participate in this event. He and my friends usually help me to get information of competitions and help me confirming my entry. I always try to give my best and win medals as this is the best way to revert back the supports of my well-wishers and family," said Jagwinder. When asked about practising his passion in nearby universities and tracks, he said, "people at training centres only concentrate on giving tips to professionals rather focusing on amateurs. They treat them as they are coming for recreational activities, hence rather wasting my time there I prefer to perform alone with my watch, to note down my performance timings," he said Jagwinder. "I always wear proper gear during my routine cycling and while participating in competitions. Safety gears are important part when it comes to reduce the risk of getting serious injuries. Safety always comes first and is as important as breathing,” said Jagwinder. A tough competition
Jagwinder faced a tough competition while competing against his friend-cum-opponent Abhishek. A teacher by profession, Abhishek suffers from leg-length inequality (leg anisomelia). Despite this, Abhishek is cycling since the past many years. He finished second in the same event of 25km patch for para-cyclist. |
