Daylight robbery at Dera Bassi post office
Dera Bassi, May 5 Eyewitnesses said there were around 15 persons, including seven customers, inside the post office when the robbers entered the post office. The robbers held them captive and directed the postmaster, Shanta Sharma, to give them the keys of the chest where cash was kept. As she refused to give the keys and tried to divert their attention saying that the safe contains documents and not cash, one of the robbers thrashed her. In the meantime, Dharm Pal, an employee, handed over the keys to the robbers, who opened the chest and took away a bag containing Rs 99,400. Besides, they looted Rs 1 lakh lying with Raninder Singh, another employee. He was also assaulted as he tried to film their activity on his mobile phone. Raninder Singh said the robbers were carrying pistols and warned of dire consequences if anyone raised an alarm. Shanta Sharma said they had withdrawn Rs 4 lakh, which was to be paid to customers. The robbers decamped with the bag carrying Rs 1 lakh but failed to notice the other bag which contained the remaining amount, she added. Interestingly, there was no CCTV camera installed at the post office. It did not even have a security guard. Barwala, May 5 The protesters also threatened to block the Panchkula-Yamunanagar highway if the administration fails to solve the problem in the next four days. Earlier, the INLD leaders had given a representation to the district administration seeking action against poultry farms that were allegedly dumping spurious feed and chicken droppings in an unscientific way thereby causing air and water pollution in the area. The housefly menace has made the lives of thousands of villagers miserable and they apprehend it could lead to outbreak of some epidemic. INLD MLA from Kalka Pradeep Chaudhary along with his supporters today reached Mauli village and marched to the police post raising slogans against the state government. The protesters also criticised the district administration for giving a burial to the serious problem that has badly affected the socio-economic status of scores of villagers in Barwala area, known for one of the biggest poultry belt of the country. Addressing the gathering, Chaudhary claimed to have raised the issue in the Vidhan Sabha in 2012. Then, Haryana Health Minister Rao Narinder Singh had also assured of an early solution. “Two years have passed since the minister’s assurance and the problem has aggravated. Today, the situation is such that marriage proposals for girls and boys of these villages were being rejected. Even farm labourers have shifted to other areas due to the menace,” the MLA claimed. Area Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gurmit Singh along with Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department, MR Singla reached the spot to pacify the protesters. The SDM assured them that an action would be taken against the polluting poultry farms under Sections 268, 269 and 270 of the IPC. The officials said the Environment Department had already issued closure orders to 20 poultry farms and warning to 147 poultry farms for not complying with the directions of the Pollution Control Board. Criminal cases have been registered against persons for dumping rotten feed in the open at Jaloli and Naggal villages, the SDM claimed. Poultry farms to be blamed

Appointment of chief of police complaints body Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, May 5 After going through an affidavit filed by UT Home Secretary Anil Kumar, the Bench of Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice HS Sidhu observed in its orders that the Chandigarh Administration had not asked for names of retired Judges from the High Court Registrar. Virtually indicting the UT Administration, the Bench observed that the UT Administration had contacted only two retired Judges, Justice Kuldeep Singh of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice SS Sodhi of the Allahabad High Court. They were not expected to accept the offer; and the entire process was aimed at appointing a bureaucrat. The High Court, on the previous date of hearing, had virtually admonished the States of Punjab and Haryana, along with the Chandigarh Administration, for appointing retired bureaucrats before making thoroughgoing effort to find retired Judges for appointment as chairpersons of the state-level police complaints authorities. The Bench had expressed its total dissatisfaction over the manner in which the respondents were appointing the retired bureaucrats or retired police officers as heads of statutory tribunals. The Bench was of the view that the manner of appointment was in total disregard of the fact that the confidence of public could only be inspired with the appointment of retired Judges. |
