Steps in sync
Spiritual, intellectual, inspiring; there are several ways an artist would like to describe and in turn be defined by their art form. Bharatnatyam dancer Malavika Sarukkai wraps up her emotions in the term she has coined — 'dynamic meditation'. Perhaps nothing else or anything less would sum up the relationship she shares with dance.
"It is not just a physical activity for me," she declares while in Chandigarh on an invitation by Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi for the screening of her documentary film The Unseen Sequence — a film that explores the dance form of Bharatnatyam through her. Acclaimed critically for her creative dance choreographies and bestowed with the Padma Shri, the film was an altogether different experience — one that put things in a different perspective for her. "Once we finished making the film, it showed me my art form through a different perspective. It is about the core of dancing and why I dance." Nevertheless, the project precedes the protagonist and the art form is placed above the artist. She adds, "This is not an applause film; it is a film about a creative process and the journey of Bharatnatyam. It just places my dance in the context of things." Her presence in the film can be limited to the performances, beyond that the entire creative process was left to the director. "The concept was entirely of the director. I did not have anything to do with it and at the same time, if I was dancing, he'd just let me be. There was a lot of trust between us." Explains the fact that all sequences have been shot while she was in performance! "Making a film on dance is not easy, it is rather very difficult. It has been chosen as the one of the three films in the Dance On Camera Festival at the Lincoln Centre. That is a great thing for an Indian dance," she takes the opportunity to pass on the credit to filmmaker Sumantra
Ghoshal.
Short take
For the uninitiated, he is the advertising guy who made Zakir Hussain sip tea on national television! Having found his comfort level with the artist, the documentary titled Zakir followed. The shorter version of the three-and-a-half-hour documentary titled The Speaking Hand toured internationally. "The transition from advertising to film-making wasn't tough. I always had an affinity for the arts. My first-ever association with an artist was with the great tabla maestro Zakir Hussain," says Ghoshal. He shares, "It means two stories — one of Bharatnatyam and the other of the dancer as well as how they are interwoven. It is neither a biopic on her nor a documentary on just Bharatnatyam itself." The film was completed last year after two years. "I am very self-critical. I hate mediocrity. The worst thing to do is to make a mediocre film." Just some of the thoughts that keep him from immediately jumping on to the next project or even mentioning the next idea!

Beyond name & fame
You can spot the fading black line on her index finger. Except for that, everything about her is bright and colourful in a subtle manner. She gives a firm handshake, flashes a warm smile and greets with well-chosen words to ensure that the heavy surname attached to her name doesn't send you in a tizzy.
The red, hard cover of her book, India-An Alphabet Ride, stacked besides her lends a pink hue to her glowing face and soothing presence. In no time, you are at ease with Shallu Jindal, author, Kuchipudi artiste, Chairman of National Bal Bhawan, Vice-President of Flag Foundation of India; wife of steel baron and Member of Parliament Naveen Jindal! Booked for life
Over the years, Shallu has achieved a lot; each time contributing to archiving the culture of India. While for many, patriotism is a philosophical concept, for her, it is an emotion she feels daily. "India-An Alphabet ride is an extension of the same emotion," says Shallu, who was at English Book Shop, in Chandigarh, to promote her book. It's a children's book, an idea she conceptualised to present the history, traditions, culture, festivals, food, and everything about India in an interesting, illustrative as well as informative manner! It took her two years to release the book and now it has coincided with her taking over as the Chairman of National Bal Bhawan. "It's the authority that gives me the privilege to upgrade the facilities provided on the campus, which sprawls across 13 acres." Family tree
The elite of Delhi are usually segmented as social workers or socialites. Even when the former is a part of the introduction, the latter is difficult to give up entirely. Shallu never bothered to venture into the socialite zone. "Being a mother of two is a big job in itself. Now that my children are grown up, I devote my time to meaningful activities." Multitasking, she says, is no big a deal. "That all women are proficient at. It gives me a sense of satisfaction to work for society," she says. Her husband, she shares, has stood by her, like she did when he fought a nine-year long battle to legalise hoisting of the national flag at private institutions. "There were instances when people would question the reason behind taking up the cause. They would consider it a futile effort but we felt for it; for the fact that every Indian citizen has the right to hoist to the national flag." And they won! The win was chronicled by Shallu in her first coffee table book, Tiranga: A Celebration of the National Flag. In the children's book also, F stands for Freedom and Flag, which has a picture of her husband Naveen Jindal and his contribution to the cause of national flag alongside. Personal corner
Married for twenty years, with an elder son who is 18, Shallu can give a regular gym-goer a complex! While you expect she must be into a strenuous fitness regime, she says, dance does the magic for her. It is for two-and-a-half hours, four days a week that she practices Kuchipudi and that's about it. A firm believer in destiny, she says that everything happens for a reason. "I met my dance gurus, Raja and Radha Reddy, in Tirupathi and I told them that I eagerly I want to learn the dance form. A few months post that, she got a call and hence began her tryst with Kuchipudi," Shallu says, as she starts checking out a few book titles. She confesses that she is an avid reader, who is a little partial towards murder mysteries. "But on my bedside table, you will find Forty Rules Of Love, a book I allude to solve daily issues." Bollywood and music features in her interest list as well. And in-between, she loves to visit her husband's constituency. "I feel thrilled to see people voting this time. Everyone's voting, especially youngsters, and to watch it all instills in me a sense of pride." The fading mark of ink is a stamp of her enthusiasm!

Young voice, strong notes
The one thing that Navraj Hans can handle beautifully, other than this his sweetheart Ajit, is criticism. In fact, those not- so-likeable words boost his confidence. "This is something that I have learnt from my father; he has taught us how to handle criticism constructively," says Navraj coming clear with the recent negative things said about his acting in his debut film Marriage Da Garriage.
Navraj is in no hurry to divert from the topic; you can go on telling him about things he should work upon and the humble singer would probably be making mental notes on it! But as of now, he is also in a childlike rush to share a piece of good news. Navraj, the elder son of celebrated Sufi singer Hans Raj Hans, has opened his account in Bollywood by singing a track in the film Purani Jeans — Jind meriye — for Ram Sampat. Navraj, who gives his family and pretty wife the credit for making him the person he is, enthusiastically talks about this new project. "Ram Sampat had offered me the song and when he heard my voice, he told me that he cried," says Navraj, humming the track for us. His mellifluous voice gives life to the track. You can't help dropping a compliment. "Thanks, I can handle compliments well," he laughs. With many Punjabi singers vying to sing in Bollywood films, Navraj candidly shares that it is not an easy thing to do. "Contrary to what people say and think that I have it easy because of my father, they should know I struggled for 5-6 years till finally things started falling in place. Bollywood is a big sea and sailing in it is not easy; nothing but your talent can help you sail," he says. Navraj has been staying in Mumbai for long now —a place that doesn't care about where you come from or who you are! "I had to work to detach myself from my father's shadow and prove that I was worth giving a shot. Hindi film songs are situational and a voice has to justify it. No matter what, a Punjabi singer has a pronounced accent; getting over that and singing with all clarity is the challenge. All said and done, Punjabi singers now enjoy a special place in Bollywood," he shares. Navraj balances both singing and acting well, the way he manages his family time. In fact, he is always doubly careful of giving the special ones in his life all the attention they need. "After all they are my shield when I am hit by criticism," he smiles. Up next is his Punjabi film Punjabiyan Da King. Before we could ask, this singer gets the ball rolling…"I am an actor who will follow the director to the tee. I was totally new to films when I did Marriage Da Garriage; I understand that the film had loopholes but in my second film, I have worked and tried to cover all the loopholes," adds Navraj, who has picked up couple of lessons from his first project. "There are no mistakes, only lessons," he shows the status message on his What's App application! "Isn't it true," he follows the message like God's word! jasmine@tribunemail.com

Dressed to chill
Ashima Batish
It ultimately depends on your choice and not the designer labels that your wardrobe boasts of. A wrong pick, even with a few thousand dollar bill tagged to it, can fail to impress if it is not teamed right with accessories or if it doesn't suit the body type. But those who claim to know-it-all about fashion have over the time associated labels with style, price with fashion. So, when Simran Kaur Mundi stepped out in retail brands rather than high street names, she proved many a fashion followers wrong. Her style was in place, so was her confidence as she stepped out for her first press conference as a Punjabi film actor and not a former Miss India. Hair to stay: She has long hair and they looked well tamed in loose curls. They complemented her casual chic look. Dress material: Her dress in nude pastel not just was apt for the weather, but also suited her flawless complexion. The knee-length dress from Mango was well-fitted and accentuated her lissome figure. Make up: There was nothing made up about her. She looked natural in the nude make-up, with just a hint of pink on her lips and mascara on eye-lids. We could see blush on her cheeks but that's all fine till it isn't loud. Accessory point: A pendant chain in golden hues from Forever 21 ended below her waist, adding some glitter to the plain dress. Also, she wore a brown belt, matching the colour of her brown satchel purse, again of the same brand, a combination she nailed. A flower ring sat prettily on her ring finger and she wore nothing in her ears, which in fact wasn't required at all. Only her shoes were out of place, not because the pick was wrong, but she wore it in the wrong season. You don't want to be all covered in shoes, when you have ample choice of heels or even flip flops that look so chic in summer. Rest, it was all so perfect, so stylish. ashima@tribunemail.com |

Save pictures in your computer forever! Nishtha Shukla Anand Don't we hate it when we lose important data to a computer crash? Pictures with some memorable moments, important files for the project that you have been working on or songs that take your breath away? It can be quite a drain. Luckily, there are many ways to keep all this personal or professional data with you forever! Let's see how. n The best way to protect computer files is to store them on an external drive such as a CD or a thumb drive. CDs can be used to save about 700 MB of data, while pen drives can save up to 16GB of data. However, if you have reams of data to be stored such as movies and music, external hard drives can save terabytes of data. n There are times when it can be difficult to decide how much data you want to store. This becomes easy when you store your data manually. So prioritise your data and save what you think is most important. n If you are short on time, it's a good idea to download a backup programme. It's important to note here that you don't miss out on some essential data from being stored while setting up a backup manager. These programmes compress your files and keep them in a corner of the computer. These are also used on an external drive. n If you are a Mac user, it's a good idea to use the Time Machine and keep your data protected. Apple users also have the option of saving their data to the cloud. So you can save data from the Mac, iPod or iPhone and access it from just about anywhere. n Dropbox is another fabulous solution, especially for those who want to save work-related documents. This is a cloud service, which works like an external hard drive. It lies in your computer but saves on the cloud. A great way to ensure nothing is ever lost. star track
The sizzling on-screen chemistry between Katrina Kaif and Hrithik Roshan in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, will be seen once again in their upcoming flick Bang Bang. But if the latest reports are anything to go by, the reel life bond is because of their growing fondness for each other off-screen. But to avoid any link-up stories, Katrina is maintaining a distance from Hrithik Roshan. Rumour has it that Katrina wants to avoid all the possible rumours that may surface, just like it did earlier during Salman-Katrina-Ranbir love triangle!
Sources also claim that during the shoot of Bang Bang, Katrina and Hrithik shared excellent rapport. But before anyone could speak about their 'friendship', Katrina suddenly started making attempts to stay away from Hrithik. And it clearly points that this step is to evade possible media news on Ranbir-Katrina break-up! Maybe the real reason will never be known, considering Katrina's repeated denial on her relationship status with Ranbir. So discussing her bond with Hrithik is a far-fetched story!
No return...
Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin were talking about patching up but Kalki is a very strong-willed and independent woman who lives by her values and ideals. Sources say that she is not returning to Anurag.

And now, finally, I'm doing with the world's leading brand in sexual wellbeing - Durex! Sex is still considered a taboo in our country and the idea behind my association with Durex is to create awareness around sexual wellbeing, promote safe sex and have fun while doing it!" Ranveer said. "After intensive brainstorming, my partners at Durex and I have jointly devised a creative campaign, but it'll be a while before it releases. It will surely hit the spot, but it won't be coming soon!" he added. The commercial can be seen on YouTube as of now.

Nargis gets down to action
Nargis Fakhri has returned from the US after shooting her first international film. Directed by Paul Feig, the film is titled Spy and it will feature Nargis in her first action role. She speaks more about it.
Spy girl
I don't know why some sections of the Indian media have written that I've shot with Jude Law because I haven't. He is in the film but I haven't shot with him yet. There are also Jason Statham and Melissa MacCarthy in Spy with me. I can't reveal what I am playing until the producers make their announcement. But I can tell you they're planning a global campaign with actors from various parts of the world. I'd be representing this part of the world. He's directed Bridesmaid and Heat. He was amazing to work with. I've to go back for about a week's work. All I call tell you about my role is that it is action-packed. Varun is the hero
I am happy people liked Main Tera Hero. But I'm happier for Varun Dhawan than for myself. He has been very supportive. And it's his film. From first frame to the last. As for me, I got good feedback on Twitter. But I got mixed signals about my own performance. Some critics have been very harsh. That's okay. I like honest criticism. I know I'm not the consummate Bollywood heroine. But I'm working hard on it. No support
Sometimes I feel I am an alien in Bollywood. I am living the way I want to. I am glad I don't have to lie and pretend. When I came to Mumbai I had no one to support me. My team is all that I had. It still holds true. I am struggling to find my bearings. Laugh at yourself
It's important to be able to laugh at oneself. I don't think too many people do that around here. I am still taken aback by how much people comment on others. And though I may say I don't care there's always that tiny percentage of self-doubt within me created by people's perception of me. At the end of the day I do care about what people think of me. I am human.

The World Before Her made me an anti-feminist: Anurag
Anurag Kashyap unveiled the first look of Nisha Pahuja's award winning film The World Before Her, the first documentary he is presenting. Among others who were present at the event were the Chak De! India director Shimit Amin and former Miss India Pooja Chopra who also features in the film slated for May 2014 release.
Anurag who turned up at the event despite being unwell spoke passionately about why he was supporting the film, "When I saw the film and I saw so many girls training in Durga Vahini camps and Miss India Pageant, I felt I knew these girls. Growing up in a small town I have seen many such girls, including my sister." He added, "The film stayed with me for a long time. It changed a lot of things in me. I think this film turned me into an anti-feminist... In the sense the whole idea of gender fight is to empower you whereas men and women should just be." He emphasised that the film should be seen by every Indian, "The film makes you feel what you are doing to women around you. That is one of the reason I felt this film should release across India and be seen by everyone. I hope this film makes the same impact in this country as it has world over because it is a film about India." Raving about the film, Chak De! India director Shimit Amin said, "We are the biggest movie making country and this is the most honest portrayal of what actually is happening in this country.' Pooja, who features in the film, became very emotional while narrating her life story. She was an unwanted second girl child whose father wanted to get rid of her and it was her mother who left her husband and brought up both the girls on her own. "It is a heavily emotional moment for me." she said," It is my story and more than me it is my mom's story. She struggled through tough times." Talking about why it is difficult to release documentaries in India, the writer-director Nisha said, "People think they are very boring." Pahuja thanked Anurag and Shimit for backing the film and told the media how Anurag came on board, "Shimit saw the film at IFFI and sent me the most beautiful email saying 'what can I do to help you'. He suggested that I should show it to Anurag. Fortunately, Anurag loved the film so much that he decided to present it. "In a county like India where documentaries hardly release, it would have been impossible to release it without Anurag's support." The event was followed by a special screening of the film hosted by Anurag
Kashyap.

Rock on!
Actor Shabir Ahluwalia, who is currently seen as Rockstar Abhi in Kumkum Bhagya, talks about his role and more.
Tell us a bit about your character. This is the first time that I am playing a rockstar on television. In order to look my part, I had to ensure that not only did I have to get my look and costume correct, but also the attitude. How is your co-actor
Sriti Jha? She is a wonderful lady, whom I met for the first time through this show. She is very warm and we are all like a family. Has your character been inspired from Farhan Akhtar's Rock On? Not at all; my character is flambouyant and a wild kind of person. He is the kind of a person who likes to explore life. You are playing a musician in the show. Do you know how to play any musical instrument in real life? Yes, I know how to play the guitar. I have even trained myself. If given an opportunity, I would love to play a guitar in the show. You are also looking fit. Have you shed weight? Well, for this role I have shed twelve kilos. I did a lot of gymming and also participated in other outdoor games like football and cricket. It definitely gives me motivation and I love my transition. — HRM
