Cops intercept DFSC’s vehicle
Jalandhar April 4 The incident occurred this afternoon when the cops stopped DFSC Surjit Kaur’s vehicle for checking as it had put a blue beacon atop it. The DFSC was accompanied by her son and a driver. Police official Raj Kumar reportedly asked the DFSC to show documents, which permitted her to use blue beacon atop their car. Kaur alleged that despite informing the official about the permission to use blue beacon, he used foul language against her. Kaur’s son, a resident of Canada, also blamed the police official for misbehaving with her mother. “We showed them documents permitting my mother to use the beacon, but the policeman was not ready to listen and was adamant on issuing a challan. He said the beacon could not be used as the election code of conduct is in force. He must know that the code of conduct doesn’t debar the DFSC to use a beacon,” Kaur’s son, told ACP, Traffic, Dalbir Singh Butter. Raj Kumar, on the other hand, denied using foul language. ACP (Traffic), Jalandhar, Dalbir Singh Butter, later said the DFSC could use blue beacon as the
election code does not restrict that. |

Employees also demanded that the pay commission report be implemented on - anganwari workers, helpers, ASHA workers, mid-day meal workers and part time workers working under the outsourcing schemes of various departments. They also demanded that the discrepancies in the 5th pay commission be removed and privatisation be stopped. Speaking for all employees, including those covered under SSA, RMSA, Zila Parishad, Panchayat Department, Water Supply, Sewerage Board, Suwidha Centres, the union members said they should be regularised and their salaries and allowances be revised. Admn chooses social media to make voters aware
Jalandhar, April 4 Within a short span of 14 days, it has got 274 fans, mostly youth, who follow and share each post unfailingly. “The looks are just amazing. The cover page does not look like a government’s page designed for elections. The page is full of thought provoking information that makes the voters aware of their right. I have shared the page with all my friends,” said Deepak Handa, a student. He said after the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme held at his college recently, most of his friends had started discussing election related issues at the college cafeteria, on Facebook and even during casual meetings. An initiative taken by Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam, to encourage voters of their right, the page not only answers various election related queries of youth, especially first time voters, but also carries information about poll related activities happening in the city. “In today’s world, social networking is the key to reach out to the youth. We are promoting this page amongst youth in all our SVEEP programmes. Also, people can suggest and share their views on the page to enable us to conduct the elections in a free and fair manner,” said Roojam. The Deputy Commissioner said the artwork on the website was so catchy that most of the youth could not resist themselves from forwarding and sharing it with their friends, thereby supporting our mission to create awareness on the issue. One of the most recent posts that have caught everybody’s attention is the story of Shayam Saran Negi, a-97-year old school teacher from a remote village in the foothills of Himalaya. According to the information provided by the page, Shayam Saran is India’s first voter and being a stern believer in democracy, he has voted in every general election since 1951. Some of the catchy slogans like ‘Stay Fit with Voting Machine’, ‘Vote for Country, Not for Mantri’ and ‘Aaj Mein Aapne Vote Se Itihaas Banaunga, Iss Baar Mein Vote Karne Avashaya Jaaunga’ are proving to be helpful for the cause. The daily activities of the SVEEP programme held at various colleges regularly get a prominent place on the page. The most dedicated fan of the page is ‘Mysterieux Fille’, a mysterious follower, who shares, likes and posts comments on almost every post. This page has followers from other cities and states of the country as well. |
Computer teachers demand pending salaries; rue assignment of poll duties
Jalandhar, April 4 Pawan Sharma, president of the Computer Teachers Union said, “About 60 per cent of the total teachers who have been assigned duties are women and even as we have been telling the government that couples as well as women with children face a lot of difficulty especially when assigned duties in far-flung areas, scant consideration has been paid to this factor.” “Barring this, while members of the entire union have been posted as stat entry operators in the offices of
SDM-I and II as well as on various places as booth level officers, presiding officers and
APROs, the government hasn’t bothered to pay us our long- pending allowances,” he added. Sushil Kumar, vice president of the union, said the non-receipt of salaries had
de-stabilised their finances owing to which they were unable to afford the education of their children. He said even after sitting on hunger strike for some days in the past month, they haven’t been able to afford food for their families. Notably, a state-level delegation of the union had met the committee constituted by the government to look into their grievances recently but teachers allege the (Education Department is mum on the denial of two months’ salary and 9 months’ DA allowances even as computer teachers are an integral workforce for election-related work. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had formed a four-member committee to look into the problems of computer teachers. The said committee also looked only into the complaints and did not initiate any action. Meanwhile, teachers demanded the quick payment of their dues to ensure smooth functioning by them during the elections. |

Patwaris reluctant to sit in new patwarkhana
Jalandhar, April 4 The patwaris regret that the number of cubicles in the new patwarkhana atop the office of sub-registrar is far less than required. They said under such circumstances, two patwaris have been allotted one workstation which makes them all the more
uncomfortable. Only a few patwaris have shifted their records to the new premises with the rest of them ruing that the new area is too congested, with only a little space for them to keep their files, registers and land records. While some patwaris from the rural circles have shifted, those from the urban circles including those falling under kanungos of Reru, Wariana and Lambra are yet to take up space here. The patwaris of these circles said that the records of the rural area is limited. “But the record in the city is high. We find it more comfortable sitting in the old space for we need to come back again here to refer to the old files still lying stacked here,” said a patwari of Reru circle. The Tribune had highlighted on March 10 that the patwarkhana inaugurated by Revenue Minister on September 9 last after spending Rs 3.26 crore had been lying unutilised. On March 12, Deputy Commissioner Varun Roojam had visited the office and ordered shifting of patwaris. Tehsildar-1 Seema Singh said she was too busy with the election work to even see if the patwaris have shifted. “I have been told that there is some space problem. The kanungos have no space to sit there. We have brought the matter to the notice of the Deputy Commissioner. It is for him to take a call in the matter now”. |
Election office sets up single window permission cell for political rallies
Jalandhar, April 4 Sharma said an effort would be made to get the party permission from the seven-member team the same day. He, however, said that the party would have to apply for permission for public meetings, rallies, use of loudspeakers, use of vehicles
and landing of choppers of political leaders at just one point in the city headquarters. Asked if any rent had been fixed for the government properties used for political rallies like mandis and market places, he said only the respective government departments would know. Further quizzed if the parties would be given a go-ahead to hold rallies in the middle of the road as had happened earlier, he replied, “Yes, if the concerned civic body and the police has no objection to it and it is felt that there would be no public inconvenience.” |
