Govt wakes up to plight of the poor
Ludhiana, March 24 Ration distribution under the Atta Dal Scheme for the BPL families, which was pending for the past three months, was distributed among the people at Dhandra and the surrounding villages a few days ago. The residents of the area understand that though the distribution of grain was a poll gimmick, this had ensured full-time meal for their children. “We wonder how the public distribution system becomes so efficient during the poll season. We kept waiting for the subsidised grain for the past few months, but it never reached us. But just before the elections, the government had provided us grain enough for three months,” said Darshan Singh of Dhandra village, who works with a private security agency. While speaking to The Tribune, Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal said: “The scheme was continuing before the model code of conduct came into effect. If there has been a new beneficiary, then it is a violation. We are keeping a close check on it.” The state Election Commission recently asked the district authorities not to allow cards used for distributing food grains under the scheme as these cards bear the photographs of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal and Food Supplies Minister Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon. The good news for the SAD-BJP government, which had worked overnight to re-launch the scheme just before the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections came into force, is that the government has not been stopped from distributing food grains under the scheme. Even as the elections are round the corner, the state government will be distributing food grains worth Rs 170 crore under the scheme from February to May 2014. While taking a potshot at the ruling SAD-BJP government, Raghubir Singh, member of the State Campaign Committee of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), said: “This proves that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal knows the pulse of the people. The senior politician knows that there is no ‘Modi wave’ in the state and this is the reason he is showing so much of urgency in distributing food grains.” |
