Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 21
Trials to select junior batch of the Chandigarh Football Academy were conducted at the soccer grounds of the Sports Complex in Sector 42, here today. Local soccer players, however, continued to show less interest and only one player from the city appeared for the trials, who too failed to qualify to the next round due to short height.

No local players have been enrolled in the academy for years now and the locals too show less interest in appearing for the trials.

The state-run academy is famous for producing best of the players for the nation and till date, a total of 23 players have carved their niche in the field.

In today’s trials, players from Bangalore, Sikkim, Manipur, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh had come, but however, only one player was witnessed from the City Beautiful. The same scenario is witnessed annually. “Parents in Chandigarh should take keen interest in crafting their child’s future. Children, who are ten years of age, should be imparted with training and personal attention. If players from other states can come and clear the physical tests with good distinctions then why can’t children from our city show the same confidence-level and determination? Next time, hopefully, locals would show some interest,” said Harjinder Singh, coach of CFA and a former skipper of the Indian football team.

Meanwhile, a total of 40 players, from various states, appeared for the Chandigarh’s leg trials. As many as 31 players were qualified for the physical stamina tests. The probables performed shuttle-running, long stride sprint, medicine ball throw, 800m running and high jump during the trials.

The final leg trials are scheduled for March 24.

A total of 24 players would be selected, under the new batch, before appearing for the final medial age verification check-up.
