Man gets jail for rape
Mohali, March 21 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Jaswinder Seemar pronounced the sentence to Harpreet Singh. The court, however, acquitted another accused, Harjeet Singh. A case was registered at the Kharar police station , against the both accused for raping a minor girl, a resident of Rasenheri village, in Mohali under the Sections 363, 366-A , 376 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code. The police have initiated an inquiry into the complaint lodged by an elderly woman who alleged that her son and her daughter-in-law had beaten her up. In a complaint to the SSP, Kuldeep Kaur (76), a resident of Kharar, said her son, a retired tehsildar, called her to Sector 68 on the pretext of giving her some money. But she was taken in a car and allegedly beaten up by him and his wife. She said she called the police helpline for women but no case was registered. Instead, she was allegedly harassed by the police. She gave a written complaint to the SSP who marked an inquiry to the DSP (City 2). |
Policeman, accomplice get 3-yr jail
Panchkula, March 21 The two accused, Vishpal, a police constable, and Abbal Singh, were convicted while 16 others were acquitted yesterday by the court. The term of Abbal Singh was termed ‘undergone’ by the court. A former municipal councillor of Kurukshetra was among the acquitted. On March 29, 2013, three youths were kidnapped on gunpoint from the busy market of Sector 10 Panchkula outside the Tawa restaurant allegedly by 18 youths. The police managed to trace the kidnappers and the victims by the evening. The victims were Karanvir, Lucky and Sonu, all residents of Sector 5, Mansa Devi Complex (MDC), Panchkula. According to the police, it was a property dispute which led to a brawl and kidnapping. The police said that the victims

80-year-old man found dead
Panchkula, March 21 Singh had gone to the market last evening. But didn’t returned and his family members informed the police. The victim is survived by two sons. The post mortem of the victim was conducted at the General Hospital, Sector 6. Some injury marks were found on his body and doctors said it appeared that he had has fallen from height. The police said they are investing the case from all angles and were trying to find out whether he was pushed from height. The family was murmuring about some foul play. Youth commits suicide
A 20-year-old boy was found hanging from a tree in Sector 4 early this morning. The victim, identified as Sahil, was a resident of Haripur Village. The police said victim’s family was said to be in depression. A case was registered at the Sector 5 police station. Sahil leaves behind mother and two siblings. Sahil was the eldest of the three siblings. The post mortem of the victim was conducted at the General Hospital Sector 6 here. The body was later handed over to the family. |

Elderly woman swindled
Panchkula, March 21 Bimla is a resident of Paonta Sahib and had come to Sector 12-A to stay at her sister’s place. She was going to a nearby dispensary when the couple targeted her. After the victim removed all the jewellery and kept in a handkerchief, the couple enchanted some mantras. They asked the victim to open the handkerchief after going home. When she opened the same, she found all her was missing, said the police. The police said a case was registered and the investigations are underway. On March 8 an NRI woman was also robbed of gold jewellery worth 2 lakhs fraudulently by a couple (in late forties) who struck a friendly conversation with her stating that they would end all her problems by enchanting some 'mantras' near her son's house in Sector 9. |

Chandigarh, March 21 No local players have been enrolled in the academy for years now and the locals too show less interest in appearing for the trials. The state-run academy is famous for producing best of the players for the nation and till date, a total of 23 players have carved their niche in the field. In today’s trials, players from Bangalore, Sikkim, Manipur, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh had come, but however, only one player was witnessed from the City Beautiful. The same scenario is witnessed annually. “Parents in Chandigarh should take keen interest in crafting their child’s future. Children, who are ten years of age, should be imparted with training and personal attention. If players from other states can come and clear the physical tests with good distinctions then why can’t children from our city show the same confidence-level and determination? Next time, hopefully, locals would show some interest,” said Harjinder Singh, coach of CFA and a former skipper of the Indian football team. Meanwhile, a total of 40 players, from various states, appeared for the Chandigarh’s leg trials. As many as 31 players were qualified for the physical stamina tests. The probables performed shuttle-running, long stride sprint, medicine ball throw, 800m running and high jump during the trials. The final leg trials are scheduled for March 24. A total of 24 players would be selected, under the new batch, before appearing for the final medial age verification check-up. |
SGGS lift Sir Sadi Lal trophy
Chandigarh, March 21 In the women’s general championship, A-division, eves of the GGS College for Women bagged the first spot and lifted the P1 Bains trophy by securing 417 points. Arjuna award recipient and Olympian Surinder Singh Sodhi, IPS, IGP, EOW (Crime) was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away cash prizes, trophies and mementoes to the position holders. Outstanding sportspersons, who represented country in international competitions and secured first, second and third positions in senior nationals and All-India Inter-University Championships were rewarded for their achievements. PGI, Fiat Metro Motors to clash for title tomorrow
Chandigarh, March 21 Put in to bat first, Placement Guru could score 114/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Rupinder Rana was the top scorer 30 (34) with two sixes, while Ashish Kumar scored 28 (31) with 4 fours. From Fiat Metro, Ajay took four for 14 while, Amar took two for 25. While chasing the target, Fiat Metro Motors scored 116/4 with 9 balls to spare. Lalit Arora was the top scorer with a fine knock of 43 (43).
