Shivam, Mehak adjudged best athletes

Chandigarh, March 9
The 67th Annual Athletics meet of PEC University of Technology, concluded at the college grounds’, here today. Events included high jump 5,000mts, long jump, 200m, 50m, high jump, 400m hurdle, discus throw, slow cycling, three legs race were organsed during the two-day competitions. Students Shivam Nath Gaur and Mehak Sra were awarded with the title of best athletes in boys’ and girls’ category, respectively. Sandeep was named as the best athlete in ME category. All the players were awarded with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 (each), presented by Ajay Kadian, IFS and a PEC alumnus.

Young golfer looks forward to a great season

After completing his last year's golf season, on high note, 13-year old local golfer Aadil Bedi is looking forward to explore more in the upcoming season starting from April. The Indian Golf Union (IGU) will start the domestic golf circuit from April.

This year, Aadil is planning to play at least 7 tournaments of the B category in national circuit across the country apart from couple of amateur golf matches, for exposure. "I am looking forward to perform well this year. The season is tough as I will be facing good competition, so I am leaving no stone unturned to give my best of the performance. Last year, I competed against good rivals and on a high last year's performance, I will begin my 2014 season" said Aadil.

With major tournaments in mind, he is stressing on routine fitness and trying his hands on exploring different greens. "I will start practicing at Forest Hill Golf Resort under the supervision of Simran Sethi, who looks after my course management skills and shot selections, as an expert. I am also undergoing practice sessions at Chandigarh Golf Association's (CGA) golf range and the golf performance centre is good to help budding golfers like me," he said. Adding another feather to his cap, he has already confirmed his participation in 2014 Teen World championship going to held at Pinehurst (USA) in July 2014.

"After sitting in the annual examination, I will have ample time to prepare for this event. At present, I am on rest from golf and going through my fitness program including motor qualities, mobility, flexibility and strength endurance with free hand exercises. Apart from the fitness and diet, I am also planning to work hard under my coach Jesse Grewal, who will look after my swing and short game," said Aadil.

Last year, Aadil had successful domestic and international tours. He finished on the top of country IGU merit list in India in C category and attained 6th spot in the world masters held in Las Vegas (USA) in June 2013. He secured second rank at age of 9 and also became No 1 in the IGU merit at the age of 10. He has already represented India in various tournaments held in Sydney, Australia, True Vision Junior Golf Tournament in Bangkok, Thailand (finished fourth), Callaway World Cup San Diego (California), USA and European Championships.

CCA honours boys’ U-19 cricket team

Chandigarh, March 9
Chandigarh Cricket Association (CCA) affiliated with Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has honoured the local cricket boys’ (U-19) team, which won the first place in the recently concluded 59th National School games, at Indore. The local team won the championship, held from January 27 to February 1.

The players were honoured with mementos and gifts. In the final match of the championship, the team of Chandigarh outclassed Punjab by 129 runs while in the semi-final match, the team defeated Haryana by 66 runs. Prior to that, the team trounced Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, to book their berth in final four.

Team members include Shivam Bambari, Amish Sidhu, Arjit Pannu, Bhagwinder, Shivam Sharma, Sachin, Vijay Deswal, Abhimanyu Singha, Ramandeep Singh, Utkarsh Aggarwal, Harjot Singh, Ujwal Noor, Jagjit Singh, Rahul Singh, Abhimanyu Srivastav, Shivam Bhardwaj, Shubhkaran (Coach), Ranjeev (Manager).

CRICKET TOURNEY
FCI, UT Police to lock horns in final

The Cricket team of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will face the Chandigarh Police in the final of Sai Navigator's Corporate Cricket Cup here tomorrow.

In the semi-final played today at the grounds of the Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, the FCI team defeated JW Marriot Hotel by 118 runs. Batting first, the winning side posted a total of 221 runs for 4 wickets in allotted 20 overs. For batting side, Arpit contributed most runs and chipped in 69 runs whereas Raghav contributed 42 runs to help the team in achieving a good total. Skipper Arun Sharma also played a quick fire knock and scored 39 runs. For JW Marriot, Rahul claimed 2 wickets.

In reply, the Marriot side bundled out for 103 runs with Parveen (31 runs) and Rahul (26 runs) scoring lion’s share. For the FCI Ravinder claimed three wickets whereas Kulwinder claimed one wicket, Arpit was awarded with the man of match award.

In the second semifinal, the team of the Chandigarh Police (CP) defeated Mohali Industries Association (MIA) by 75 runs. Batting first, the winners posted 192 runs with batsman Raman completing his century off 59 balls while Ashish Kapoor contributing 22 runs. For MIA, Kamal Dhupar and Aviral Gupta claimed a wicket each. On other end, the MIA side handed over their innings on 117 runs. Gaurav (51 runs off 34 balls) and Sanjay Jain (20 runs off 24 balls) were the main scorers for the side. For police team Parminder Singh claimed three wickets whereas his counterpart Raman claimed 2 wickets. Raman was given man of match award for his brilliant all-round performance.
