All’s not well within the Bharatiya Janata Party. Or so it seems. Senior party leaders Sushma Swaraj and Murli Manohar Joshi left a crucial party meeting today. Differences over Narendra Modi’s candidature from Varanasi and alliances with “dubious” parties apparently led to the showdown.

The Congress today sounded the poll bugle for the Lok Sabha elections. It announced its first list of 194 candidates led by party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who will again seek mandate from their respective constituencies of Rae Bareilly and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh.

Crash fears float as Malaysian plane with 239 aboard missing
Beijing/Kuala Lumpur, March 8
A Beijing-bound Malaysia Airlines flight with 239 persons, including five Indians, on board was presumed to have crashed today and the worst is feared as two large oil slicks have been spotted off Vietnam's sea coast where the plane went missing.
