Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 8
Due to the recent spurt in theft incidents in Sectors 22 and 23, the Chandigarh Police are preparing a list of government houses that are currently unoccupied in these areas. The police suspect that these vacant accommodations provide a safe haven for thieves on the prowl.

The police authorities will soon write to the UT Administration in this regard.

UT SSP Sukhchain Singh Gill said today, “As theft incidents have increased in these sectors and thieves are mostly targeting government accommodations, we have started a survey to identify which houses are currently vacant.”

“The area DSP has been asked to prepare a list of such houses where a close watch will be kept,” said the SSP.

Recently, a thief had challenged the Chandigarh Police by leaving a note promising to strike at government houses in Sector 23 on March 3.

Following this, the sector was sealed and police personnel were deployed in civvies even as patrolling parties kept a watchful eye. However, no theft was reported on the day. Thieves have been targeting government houses and have also left behind notes twice challenging the police to strike back.

The SSP said security had been beefed up in the area and patrolling parties were keeping vigil. “Area residents have also been asked to stay alert,” he added.
