Bhola’s drug ring
Charges to be framed on March 21

Mohali, March 7
Charges will be framed in the Jagdish Singh Bhola drug trafficking case in a court here on March 21.

The court of Additional and Sessions Judge PP Singh today issued production warrants for two accused in the case, Jagjit Chahal and Surjit Singh, who were not present at the hearing. The police had given an application for video-conferencing for Bhola and another accused, Anoop Kahlon. But it could not be carried out as the machine was out of order.

Complainant’s statement recorded

In the resumed hearing of the SP Deshraj case, the CBI Court today recorded the statement of Inspector Anokh Singh, complainant in the bribery case.

Recorded conversations between the accused and Anokh Singh, made during the trap, were played in the court. The recordings were made in October, 2012 when the trap was laid and the accused was arrested. After listening to the recordings Singh stated in the court that, “After hearing the contents I state that the recording pertains to conversation between me and SP Deshraj Singh which took place at his residence of SP in Sector 23, Chandigarh on October 18, 2012.” The Cross examination of Anokh Singh will take place on the next hearing to be held on March 21.

Vigilance sleuths book PUNSUP’s district manager, three others

Mohali, March 7
The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has registered a case against the district manager of the Punjab State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (PUNSUP), and three others in connection with an alleged wheat scam at Daon, near here.

According to information, a case has been registered against district manager of PUNSUP Inder Mohan Singh, Kharar in charge of PUNSUP Gurmeet Singh, Sunil Kumar and Mohali in charge Rajiv Soni at the Phase VIII vigilance police station.

They have been booked under Sections 407 and 120- B of the Indian Penal Code and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Raids are being conducted to arrest the suspects.

Earlier, a preliminary inquiry had revealed that 28,065 bags of wheat were allegedly missing from a government store located at Daon village.

As per vigilance officials, the missing bags are worth Rs 2.37 crore.

Thieves target 3 houses in Zirakpur, decamp with valuables worth Rs 8 lakh

Zirakpur, March 7
Thieves struck at three flats in a society here today and decamped with cash and gold jewellery amounting to Rs 8 lakh.

The flat owners were away when the miscreants targeted their houses. The incident came to light when they returned home and found the house locks broken.

Sukhwinder Singh, a chartered accountant, informed the police that Rs 1.5 lakh cash, a diamond ring and expensive watches worth Rs 1 lakh had been stolen.

Karthik Sharma, a consultant, reported that cash and jewellery amounting to Rs 3.85 lakh had been stolen from his house.

Janinder, a software engineer, suffered a loss of Rs 1.5 lakh. The modus operandi adopted by the accused to enter all the houses was similar. The police reached the spot along with the forensic team. No CCTV cameras were installed on the premises. A case has been registered.

Married woman abducted

A married woman was allegedly abducted from Phase I here last evening.

According to reports, the woman was buying vegetables from a rehri outside her house when a white taxi, bearing a Chandigarh registration number, stopped at the spot. The occupants of the vehicle allegedly abducted the woman, said the police. Gagandeep Singh, husband of the woman, has filed a police complaint in this regard. A case under Sections 365 and 34, IPC, has been registered against unidentified persons.

Govt should take care of veterans' fiscal needs, says athlete

Age is no bar for 76-year-old Madal Lal Chitkara when it comes to physical strength. Chitkara won the top honours during the National 35th Masters Athletics Championship organised at Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, from February 24 to 27.

The septuagenarian, a retired Hony Flying Officer of the Indian Air Force, participated in three events and clinched gold in each event. He participated in 5-km brisk walk, 5-km run and 1.5-km run in the 75-80 age-group.

"I have been practising for the last 14 years. I only do routine exercises to stay fit,” he said.

After this glorious win, Chitkara has qualified for the Asian Masters Athletics Championship scheduled to be held at Tokyo, Japan, from September 25.

Chitkara replied in negative when asked if the government was providing facilities to veteran athletes, adding that the government should come forward to help them. “The government should sponsor the veterans. I participated in various competitions and met the expenses on my own. There should be fiscal aid for veteran players so that they should be motivated to participate in various championships,” he added.

2 in probables’ squad

The Ball-Badminton Federation of India has selected two local ball players, in the probables’ squad for the Indian senior ball-badminton women's team, here.

Players Monu Dhiman and Sheetal Negi were selected to attend camp from March 13 to 19 at HAL Ground, Hyderabad. Both the players were selected on the basis of their performance in the senior national championship held at Bangalore and Khammam, earlier this month.

Monu Dhiman is the only player from Chandigarh who was short listed for the probable squad for the second time. She had earlier represented India in 2002.

Both of the players are trainees of Coach Inderjit Singh, who is also general secretary of Chandigarh Ball Badminton Association.

The final selected team will represent India in the Asian Countries' Ball-Badminton Championship.

Cricket tourney from March 31

The Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy will conduct Vivek Cricket League 2014 scheduled from March 31, at the schools' grounds in Sector 38, Chandigarh.

The competition will be open for schools, cricket academies and clubs.

The interested teams can confirm their entries with the organisers Sutixen Mehta, Head of the Technical Committee, Vivek High Asian Cricket Academy before March 15.

Digvijay scripts victory in tennis

Continuing his winning streak, Chandigarh's Digvijay Pratap Singh won the title of boys (U-14) category, during the final match of the HTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament, held at the Harvest Tennis Academy Jassowal, (Ludhiana). Carrying forward his top-class performance, in final, Digvijay defeated Himanshu Mor from Haryana in staright sets at 6-1 and 6-1.

In the final of girls (U-14) category, Gujrat's Vaidhehi Chaudhari claimed the title defeating Punjab's Sarah Dev in staright sets at 6-2 and 6-2. Punjab's Baani Singh won the title of girls (U-16) category defeating Vaidehi Chaudhari of Gujrat 6-2 and 6-2.
