Fazilka officers summoned: A local court has summoned Fazilka DC, SDM and Executive Officer of the Municipal Council on March 13. Former president of Bar Association Devi Lal Bishnoi had filed a case last year, resenting that civil and judicial court complexes, including the public passage, get submerged during rain, affecting day-to-day work.

Medical practitioners rounded up: The district police today rounded up agitating members of the Medical Practitioners Association of Punjab from Liberty Chowk. They have been holding regular dharnas in the city.
Today was the last day of procession. The rounded up members were let off after a few hours.

PU to revise date sheets: Panjab University (PU) on Wednesday cancelled the date sheets for all undergraduate examinations after schedule for the Lok Sabha elections was announced. Prof Parvinder Singh, PU Controller of Examinations, said the revised date sheets would be notified shortly. “The date sheets for BA, B Sc, B Com, BBA, BCA and B Sc (bio-informatics and bio-tech) already notified and uploaded on the PU’s website stand cancelled,” he added.

2 drug peddlers held: The police arrested two drug peddlers and recovered 10,000 intoxicating tablets from their possession on Wednesday. Senior Superintendent of Police Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said the two were identified as Sonu alias Tehna of Khanna and Aklesh Kumar of Bihar. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered.

Man gets 10 years:The court of District and Sessions Judge GK Dheer has convicted a man for attempt to murder and sentenced him of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000. Anil Kumar of Bajwara Kalan village was booked on March 8 last year for attacking and seriously injuring his niece with a sharp-edged weapon. Thereafter, he was arrested and booked on the charge of attempt to murder.

Saggu is Amritsar Attorney: Salwinder Singh Saggu has been promoted to the District Attorney, Amritsar. He has the additional charge of District Attorney Legal Police (Amritsar rural). Prior to this posting, Saggu was Deputy District Attorney. Saggu had joined the state prosecution as an Assistant District Attorney in 1992.

3 get 10-yr jail for gang-rape: District and sessions judge Amarjot Bhatti on Tuesday sentenced three youths to 10 years’ imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl.
The convicts, Harinder Singh of Bham village in Gurdaspur district, Rachhpal Singh of Roranwali in Gurdaspur district and Mandeep Singh of Ropar were also sentenced to five years of imprisonment under Section 363 of IPC. On August 9, 2011, Harinder, who was a ‘paathi’ in a Ropar gurdwara, drugged a Class XII student in Kurali and took her to a gurdwara. There, the three convicted raped her.

Engineer held for graft: The Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday caught a Junior Engineer (JE) of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) accepting a bribe of Rs 9,000 at Moonak. Deputy Superintendent of Police Pritipal Singh said the accused allegedly took the bribe from a farmer in lieu of installing a tube well connection. The VB took action against JE Harbans Singh on the complaint of Bhura Singh of Dhindsa village. A case has been registered.Tarn Taran
51 farmers court arrest: As many as 51 farmers courted arrest at the office of the Deputy Commissioner on the second day of the state Kisan Sangarash Committee’s agitation on Wednesday. Kanwalpreet Pannu, state KSC convener, said the organisation would carry on its agitation till their demands were met. One of their demands is better prices for their crops.
