One dead, 5 hurt in mishap:
Sohan Lal Makkar (60) of Kailash Nagar was killed, while five others were injured when a truck rammed into two motorcycles here on Sunday. The injured have been identified as Surinder Kumar (45), Rakesh Kumar (19), Raj Kumar (22) and Sandeep Kumar, all residents of Radha Swami Colony, and Sunil Kumar (25) of Abohar. The truck driver was reportedly nabbed.

Hoshiarpur
Attempt to loot ATM:
Three masked men unsuccessfully tried to steal cash from an ATM of Punjab National Bank in Bham village on Sunday. The CCTV footage showed the three accused using large stones to break open the machine. Though the machine was badly damaged, the thieves could not lay their hands on the cash. Sub Inspector Resham Singh said a case had been registered.

Sex racket busted:
The police on Sunday busted a sex racket and arrested four persons, including three women, at the house of Nirmal Kaur alias Neha in Sardar Nagar Colony. The other accused have been identified as Kulwinder Kaur alias Rosy, Karamjeet Kaur and Satwinder Singh. A case has been registered.

Engineer dies in mishap:
An engineer in Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal plant was killed when his car was hit by a train at an unmanned railway gate crossing here on Sunday. The deceased, Harjinder Singh Barnala, was a resident of Nuhon colony in the thermal plant complex. He was returning home after buying milk from nearby Rawalmajra village.

Seminar on quantum gases:
The Department of Physics, Panjab University (PU), will organise an international seminar on Current trends in quantum gases, BEC and Solitons from March 3 to 6. Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Arun K Grover would inaugurate the seminar and Prof TV Ramakrishnan, FRS, would deliver the opening talk.

Max Life Insurance announces scholarship: Max Life Insurance today announced fourth edition of ‘i-genius Scholarships’. i-Genius Scholarships reward children who excel not just in academics but also in extracurricular activities, with scholarships worth close to Rs 50 lakhs. The evaluation process of the program has been conceptualized and designed in association with Derek O'Brien and Associates. This is open to all the children studying in Class 3th to 8th all over India. There are two categories for enrollment, i-genius juniors (Classes 3 to 5) and i-genius seniors (Classes 6 to 8). Fake withdrawal of cash from ATM: A fraudulent withdrawal of money from an ICICI bank account was reported to the police today. Mohit Walia, a resident of Sector 45-C, reported that unidentified person had withdrawn Rs 61,000 from his ICICI bank account. A case under Sections 420 of the IPC and 66, 66-C, 66-D, IT Act was registered.

Applications invited for 1,900 posts:
The Haryana State Selection Commission has invited online applications to fill 1,900 posts in various categories. The candidates can apply till March 23 up to 5 pm. Applications have been invited for 1,175 posts of driver (heavy vehicles) under the Transport Department, among others. Candidates can apply through www.hssc.gov.in.

Minimum wages to go up: The Haryana Government has announced an increase in the minimum monthly wages of the workers in the state by Rs 206. The decision will be effective from January 1. The decision to increase the minimum wages would benefit over 11 lakh labourers, a press note issued here said.

Dr Gupta is American college fellow:
Cardiologist Dr Ravinder Gupta has been selected as a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC). He would attend a convention at the ACC in Washington DC on March 31. Hailing from Rajasthan, Dr Gupta has been practising in Hisar for over 27 years.

Drive for voting awareness:
The Jind district administration has started a special awareness drive to convince maximum residents to exercise their franchise in the coming elections. “Our officers have formed special teams and are visiting various parts of district to convince electorates to exercise their franchise in the forthcoming elections,” said Rajiv Rattan, Jind DC.

Body recovered:
The body of a man in his early thirties was recovered from the Markanda near Gamuti village on Thursday evening. The police have sent the body to the PGIMS, Rohtak, for the post-mortem examination. The police said the deceased was yet to be identified.

Sirsa
550 get offer letters:
Banking, insurance, real estate, BPO and healthcare companies interviewed students from Sirsa, Fatehabad and other districts at a job fair organised at Chaudhary Devi Lal University here, in collaboration with the British Council, on Friday. Anupama Ghai, head, English Education, British Council, said nearly 550 students had received offer letters.

Sonepat
6 kg of charas seized:
The police have seized 6.1 kg of charas from Sandeep, a drug trafficker of Garhwal village. Sandeep was nabbed by a joint team of the special staff and the Sadar police station, Gohana, on Friday evening from Bichpuri village. During interrogation, he confessed to supplying the drug in Uttar Pradesh. A case under the Anti Drug Act was registered against him.

Dharna staged:
The All-India Backward Classes Union staged a dharna in support of their demands here today. The union members said the coalition government in J&K had been abusing Article 370 to deprive weaker sections of their constitutional rights. The union leaders said the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) had been agitating for their constitutional rights since 1992, but the successive state governments had always stifled their voice.
