Next govt won’t be formed without AAP support: Kejriwal
Kanpur, March 2 Addressing a rally here as part of a three-day road show in Uttar Pradesh, he accused Modi of maintaining silence on FDI in retail and accused the BJP in Rajasthan of getting into a “setting” on the issue of Robert Vadra's land deal. Kejriwal said he would visit Gujarat from March 5 to 8 to see the so-called development claimed by Modi in the state. He also did not spare the ruling Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh saying that there had been more than 100 riots in the state in the last two years. Targeting Mayawati’s BSP, he said voting for it was a waste because it amounted to voting for Modi. “Only AAP can give an honest government. If you all, Hindus, Muslims and people from other castes come together and do not come under the poisonous influence of other parties, then I can assure you that this time your (people’s) government will be formed in the Centre. "AAP is going to get at least 100 seats in the Lok Sabha elections. Moreover, we are going to get more seats than the Congress. At least the government in Centre will not be formed without the AAP’s support. "AAP will help in forming the central government and we will change the face of the country,” said the 45-year-old former Delhi Chief Minister. Kejriwal questioned Modi’s stoic silence over FDI in retail, alleging the principal opposition party has received money from a multinational retail firm. — PTI

Medicos’ stir: 9 patients die in Kanpur hospital
Lucknow, March 2 Junior doctors and SP’s Kanpur MLA Irfan Solanki had clashed after a verbal duel on February 28 leaving the MLA injured and his cars damaged. The doctors were later lathi-charged by the Kanpur police. Around 20 junior doctors and medical students of the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College (GSVM) associated with the LLR Hospital were arrested. Angry doctors later boycotted emergency services at various government and private hospitals across the city. More than 1,500 government, semi-government and private doctors in Kanpur supported the GSVM students and demanded a legal case against the MLA and suspension of Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police Yashashvi Yadav. Doctors of six other medical colleges in the state - Agra, Saifai’s new mini PGI, Allahabad, Meerut, Jhansi and Lucknow - have also joined the strike, bringing medical services to a virtual standstill.

PM leaves for Myanmar today to attend 7-nation summit
New Delhi, March 2 During what is likely to be his last overseas trip before completing his term, the PM will strive to provide more teeth to India's Look East policy with a special focus on increasing connectivity in the region. The BIMSTEC, comprising Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand, provides a unique link between south Asia and Southeast Asia bringing together 1.3 billion people, 21 per cent of the world population, a combined gross domestic product of around $2.5 trillion and a considerable amount of complementarities. The PM will be accompanied by a high-level delegation that will include National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid is already in Myanmar to attend the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers' meeting. During the visit, Manmohan Singh will also have bilateral meetings with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Nepal Prime Minister Sushil Koirala and leaders from other BIMSTEC countries. The meeting with Rajapksa is being considered significant in diplomatic circles as the US looks to sponsor another resolution against Lanka at the United Nations Human Right Council (UNHRC) in Geneva later this month for alleged war atrocities. India has still not decided which way it would vote on the resolution. In his address at the summit, Manmohan Singh is expected to emphasise on comprehensive development of transport, tourism besides environment and disaster management. According to Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh, the BIMSTEC has an immense potential to bring trade, transport, tourism and other linkages to all states of India's North-East region. "It is in our interest to make sure that our North-East does not fall behind and it develops in such a manner that it is commensurate with its potential," she said at a media briefing ahead of the visit. Asked about the prospects of the grouping firming up a free trade pact, Sujatha said the process was "complex" and would take some time.

India’s first border research institute to be set up soon New Delhi, March 2 The Institute for Border Management and Strategic Studies (IBMASS) will be established under the MHA’s Border Management Division. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will be the president of the executive council which will govern the institute. Confirming the setting up of IBMASS, Border Security Force’s former Director General Subhash Joshi, who retired on February 28, said: “We have raised the infrastructure of the institute from our resources. We have sent the proposal to the MHA. We hope that it will continue to grow in future and be a think tank for not only the BSF but for the Central Armed Police Forces,” said Joshi. The BSF, which was set up by India on December 1, 1965, is currently guarding the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders and is likely to guard the India-Myanmar border. The IBMASS, which was under discussion for the past two years, is similar to the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA). The IDSA is funded by the Ministry of Defence and does research on defence and security issues. “The MHA does not have such a think tank. The idea behind IBMASS is to increase our knowledge base and thereby help improve the decision-making process. What happens now is that solutions are given without a detailed study. This will change with the extensive research that will be done through the institute to create sound solutions and policies for the government,” said BSF Inspector General Aditya Mishra, who is part of the project. The aim of IBMASS is to conduct research, develop tactics and disseminate these findings for an effective border management plan. IBMASS will have 11 research divisions, according to Mishra. They will research on drug smuggling through the India-Pakistan border in Punjab, Sir Creek and the border management that includes fencing and the use of certain kind of weapons. The institute will comprise about 80 researchers, which will include officers from the BSF, ITBP, Sashastra Seema Bal and the Coast Guard.
