Lok adalat settles 8,582 cases
Chandigarh, March 1 Besides this case, a total of 8,582 cases of different categories were disposed of at the lok adalat organised at the District Courts on Saturday. Of the total cases, 156 were settled under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instrument Act. In MACT cases, a compensation of Rs 20,50,000 was awarded. In execution petitions, an amount of Rs 3,13,64,678 was disbursed to the petitioners/claimants. In about 7,791 traffic challans, Rs 18,19,000 were imposed and realised as fine. Besides this, about 786 civil cases, rent cases, labour cases, and other categories of cases were also disposed of. In this lok adalat, 28 benches were constituted in which cases of different categories like motor accident claim cases, matrimonial cases, civil cases, civil appeals, compoundable criminal cases, cases U/S 125 CrPC, rent cases, executions, cases U/S 138 NI Act, complaints, bank cases, telephone company cases, revenue cases, labour and consumer cases, traffic challans and cases pertaining to prelitigative stage, etc., were taken up for settlement. The Judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court present at the venue appealed to the public to resolve their disputes through the lok adalats as they provide quick and economical justice. |

3 snatchers land in police net
Chandigarh, March 1 The three accused were identified as Parveen Kumar, Ram Kishan and a juvenile, all residents of Dadu Majra Colony. The accused allegedly snatched the mobile phone from Narinder Kaur, a resident of Sector 41. The police said the stolen mobile phone had been recovered from the accused. The two-wheeler used in the crime had also been recovered. The juvenile accused was produced in the Juvenile Court from where he was sent to the Juvenile Home, Sector 25. The two accused will be produced in the court on Sunday. |

2-yr-old killed in accident at Panchkula
Panchkula, March 1 The victim, identified as Faiza, died on the spot while the injured, identified as Sonu, Inan, Aatik, Jaismeen and Afreen, have been admitted to Alchemist Hospital, Sector 21, here. The passers-by informed the police about the incident. They pulled out the injured victims out of the vehicle. The police have kept the body of the child in the mortuary of the General Hospital, Sector 6, here. The investigations were on till the filing of the report. |

Inter-state gang of thieves busted; five arrested
Chandigarh, March 1 Discussing the spurt in burglary and snatching cases, DSP (crime) Jagbir Singh said, “Acting on secret information, a police team laid a nakka at the Sector 38 (West) light point. Kishan Kumar, resident of Sector 56; Muksood a resident of Sector 29; Arjun Kumar, a resident of Kajheri, besides Poonam and Nirmala, both residents of Dadu Majra complex, were arrested.” Singh said, “At the time of arrest, the accused persons were in the possession of shuttering plates and high-voltage electricity cable, which they had stolen from areas under the jurisdiction of Sector 36 and 34 police stations.” “The accused were carrying the stolen material in two vehicles at the time of arrest”, police stated. The accused - Kishan Kumar, Poonam and Nirmla - have been involved in several crime cases. Earlier, they were involved in drug peddling, added Singh. “Accused Kishan Kumar used to carry out a recce in various sectors during the day and strike at night,” he added. All the accused were produced in the court which sent accused Kishan into two-day police remand, while accused Nirmla and Poonam were sent in one-day remand and accused Arjun and Maksood in 14-day judicial custody.

Chandigarh, March 1 Chandigarh’s Sunny Sidhu finished first in Rally Xtreme, while another local rallyist Varun Davessar bagged runners-up spot in the same event. Dhiraj Arora from Chandigarh finished second in Rally Ndure. He was the navigator for Pratap Thakur. There were 55 teams in Rally Xtreme and 35 teams in Rally Moto (both categories based solely on fastest timing). Dutch player scripts victory
Chandigarh, March 1 Duim hit 11 aces, while Vardhan smashed seven aces in the final. After facing tough resistance from Vardhan in the first set, Duim bounced back strongly and attained 7-5 victory. In the second set, the Dutch player, with his impressive serves, got an edge over Vishnu. He dominated the match and took a 4-0 lead. Vishnu won the next two games, but, however, could not make it to the victory path. Antal Van Der Duim got 18 ATP points and $1,440, while Vishnu Vardhan earned 10 ATP points and $848.
