Farmer unions, postal staff sit on dharna
Bathinda, February 12 While Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugraha) and Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union have started a three-day state-level stir, the All India Postal Employees Union-Group C has started a two-day strike. The farmers unions will continue their strike till February 14. State-level dharnas are being held in Bathinda and Amritsar. Members of the farmer unions sat on a dharna along with the families of those farmers who committed suicide. Union leader Ram Singh said they demanded complete waiver of debts and Rs 5 lakh compensation and government jobs for the family members of those farmers who committed suicide. They also demand proper implementation of the agreement signed by the government with the farmers over issue of land acquisition at Gobindpura village. They want 10 marlas of land for building houses and 200 units of free power for the farmers and their families. Ram Singh said as per the rule of the government, a person can own only 17 acres of land and the rest should be distributed among landless farmers. The unions demand implementation of this rule. Meanwhile, employees of the Postal Department completely shut down their work leading to postal facility being suspended in the Bathinda division that comprises of 36 post offices of Bathinda and Mansa, said divisional secretary Makhan Lal. The work will remain suspended on February 13 as well. The agitating postal employees demand merger of 50 per cent daily allowance and interim relief till this allowance is not released, simplification of rules meant for providing jobs on compassionate grounds, overtime allowance, regularisation of gram dak sewak employees and pensions for those recruited after the year 2004. |
Inter-state gang busted: 2 arrested
Bathinda, February 12 On the intervening night of January 17-18, some unknown people stole away 218 sacks of paddy seeds from Satguru Feed Factory at Harraipur village. The factory owner, Raju Kumar, a resident of Model Town Phase I, had lodged a complaint at the Nehianwali police station. SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the SP (Detective), Swarn Singh Khana, DSP (Detetcive), Ranjit Singh and CIA in-charge Jagdish Kumar investigated the case. The police booked Mukhtiar Singh and Tara Singh of Mari Mustafa village, Mohan Singh alias Mohni of Kahan Singh Wala village, Janta Singh of Dod village in Faridkot, Gurmail Singh of Machhike village in Moga, Satnam Singh of Haryana and Sewak Singh
alias Sekha of Moga district. Sewak Singh and Janta Singh were arrested at Burj Kahan Singh Wala village. The police recovered 115 sacks of grains (around 40 quintal) worth Rs 2 lakh. The police officials said accused Mukhtiar Singh, Tara Singh, Gurmail Singh, Janta Singh, Sewak Singh, Mohan Singh and Satnam Singh were relatives. Punjab Govt to devise policy against doping among kabaddi players
Bathinda, February 12 “We are planning to bring in the officials of the Police Department and the district administration to conduct surprise checks and ban the players found guilty of consuming performance enhancing substances. Next year, the World Cup Kabaddi Tournament will be organised in collaboration with Pakistan, and till then, we wish to end the problem of doping among our players,” Maluka said while speaking at the Government Rajindra College today. He added that a strict policy against doping was the need of the hour since good players were sometimes outdone by those indulging into doping. When asked when the state government was planning to distribute laptops to school students, he said, “We had announced that we would give laptops, but not announced the exact date. The government will give out the laptops only once,” he said. His statement has made it evident that the state government has had a change of heart in the case of giving laptops to the students. While canvassing for the assembly elections in January 2012, the state government had announced that laptops would be given to the students of Class XI and XII. During the budget session, the government announced that tablets would be given only to Class XII students. He also rubbished the claims that the state government had issued gym kits to the Sports Department to be distributed in the villages just before the Lok Sabha elections. “The residents of the city have enough means to be fit, but the state government wants the residents of smaller towns and villages to be physically fit too. This has nothing to do with the elections,” he said. Kabaddi and hockey
wings in college
Accepting the demand by the department of physical education of the college, Maluka gave his nod for setting up of kabaddi and hockey wings in the college. He, however, steered clear of releasing funds to arrange for pistols and rifles for the shooting range in the college. “For the time being, the students will have to spend their own money to arrange for rifles and pistols to practice. The Sports Department doesn’t have enough money to buy such expensive rifles,” he said. Accepting that the current diet fund of Rs 15 per player per day was a paltry sum, he announced that it would be increased to Rs 125. He added that he would soon call a meeting of the vice-chancellors of all the three universities in the state and the fund would soon be raised. Maluka also took the opportunity to appreciate the ‘tolerance power’ of the state government towards various unions staging dharnas to pressurise the government to accept their demands. “Only our government tolerates such long protests and pressure tactics adopted by the agitating members of different unions. No other country would have allowed the body of a child to be displayed on a road and denied last rites for four days,” he said. |
Bathinda charge’s income tax net collection rises to
Rs 47 crore
Bathinda, February 12 Bathinda charge, which covers districts of Bathinda, Ferozepur, Faridkot, Mansa, Abohar and Fazilka, has around 1.26 lakh tax payers who file their income tax returns. “In the year 2011-12, the Bathinda charge’s net tax collection was Rs 25 crore less than the set target. Buoyed by the response we have got with a collection of Rs 47 crore net collection, the target for fiscal year 2014-15 is fixed at Rs 57 crore,” said Saini. He added the Malwa region districts had suffered from the problem of more tax payers and lesser refunds, which too had been sorted out. Detailing about the Aayakar Sewa Kendra (ASK) single window facility that Commissioner, Amritsar region, Gurpreet Singh, inaugurated today, Saini said the centre had been constructed at a cost of Rs 24 lakh. Started in July 2013, the trial run of the centre was conducted on November 5, 2013. At the ASK centre, all income tax related matters pertaining to the Bathinda charge, including grievances, filing of returns, rectification applications and filing of other applications to help taxpayers, would be done. “The basic aim is to reduce harassment that the public faces while filing their I-T returns,” Saini said. Service at the centre will be time-bound wherein people will be specifically told about the reason behind any delay in deliverance of service. Any application received will be given a unique identification number that will be loaded on the national server. A person with a query will have to mention the number when
he enquires about the service. Commissioner of appeals, Bathinda, Samuel, said two years ago, there were 1,000 appeals pending with the department. Of these, 600 had been cleared and the target was to clear another 900 by the end of 2014-15, he added. Factfile
