Head held high
Often the audiences talk about his infectious laughter that oozes out and his rhetoric that is like an active volcano; apart from that Navjot Singh Sidhu also makes one sit up and admire the bright and colourful shades of his turban, which are matched amazingly well with the rest of his wardrobe.
Actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh made the Punjabis and also the non-Punjabis accept an actor with a turban, which he matches with his funky attire. The burnt orange, the deep purple, the blood red, the carrot green, the royal purple, the beige, the creams; bright colours in turbans have given a twist to the entire wardrobe of people who sport them with élan. Actor Kartar Cheema ties a turban on all special occasions. Going especially to Amritsar, selecting different colours, thereafter buying his shirts to match the headgear, Kartar invests the most in turbans. “I used to tie either beige or a brown shade during my university days. Now, I notice that brighter hues are getting popular. I see Navjot Singh Sidhu sporting the best of colours, which are so amazing.” The reality show Bigg Boss Season 7 House saw Navjot Singh Sidhu set a new tag of being the ‘fashion superior’ with perfectly co-ordinated turbans. Uber cool, neon shades; unconventional colours were his pick. And then there are those like the Headmaster of Punjab Public School, Nabha, Jagpreet Singh, who has carefully picked up more than three hundred shades of turban. As he shares, “I invest a lot on turbans, just as I do on pocket squares and ties. If there is more than one function to attend, I don’t mind changing my turban three times; it is after all a mark of my personality.” It is not just the bright colours; tastefully coordinating it with the rest of the wardrobe also plays a big part. The neon colours are usually paired with light hues of shirts. Raj Angad Singh, who is preparing for his MCA, is very particular about how he coordinates his turban. “I won the Best Turban Award in the Mr Singh India contest held in Mumbai in 2010. I define my turban as a huge part of my personality. If I wear a bright colour, I don’t accessories much; generally I keep the shade of my shirt light. However, I like the way Diljit teams up his turban with his casual attire, baseball jackets and sneakers. The neon shades are popular on the international runway as well. It looks really awesome,” he adds. jasmine@tribunemail.com

On creative wings
This actor doesn’t fit into a pattern. A late bloomer, Boman Irani has strengthened his place in the film industry in no time. A creative streak was always there in Boman even when he was handling his family’s bakery business. Exploring creativity led him to advertisements, eventually to theatre and there he was playing Dr JC Asthana and winning accolades in Munnabhai MBBS.
“There was this actor lurking in me for long. It was bound to happen when it was meant to,” says Boman. Did starting late come with its share of pros and cons? Boman thinks long and hard, “I can’t think of anything negative but on the plus side, there is so much. Acting is a wonderful profession, a good creative outlet. And I learn everyday about the human mind, life and more; plus luxury that comes with it, although it is the least of the by-products.” Boman earned name in English theatre; his play I am not Bajirao got tremendous response and ran for a long ten years. Does theatre figure in his life anymore? “It was a great phase. Bajirao was essentially a two men play. My co-actor passed away and that play came to a standstill. Any play requires at least three months of your time and that I cannot give at the moment. But who knows I might return to it someday.” From English plays Boman easily slipped into Hindi films; any idols in the field? “So many; I have learnt from people in different walks of life even if I haven’t known them personally. Balraj Sahni sahib and Spencer Tracy were awe-inspiring as actors.” Boman has regaled audiences in serious, comic, negative and even romantic roles. Of the roles that he has enacted on screen, what are his favourites? “Dr JC Asthana is one, as it was my entry into Hindi cinema. I loved playing Kishen Khurana in Khosla Ka Ghosla and Ali in Well Done Abba. Playing Khurana, who doesn’t belong to my city but all together a different milieu, was very interesting. Well Done Abba was a very humbling experience. Each one of us, regardless of class, caste or religion, has the potential of being a hero — not that hero who beats villains into pulp but one who realising his or her strengths.” Boman doesn’t fit a stereotype, be it his films or endorsements. After being featured in many ads, including a washing soap, he is now brand ambassador for ‘P’ Mark Mustard Oil. “I am a foodie and also believe in the connection between fitness as well as healthy eating. The recognition of the health benefits delivered by mustard oil goes back many years and Puri Oil Mills Limited has taken this ancient heritage to new heights,” says Boman, who happily endorses anything healthy. The actor is pleased playing his Bollywood innings. He will be seen next in Bhoothnath Returns with Amitabh Bachchan, Peekay with Aamir Khan and Happy New Year with Shah Rukh Khan. Any favourite co actors? “It’s a joy working with Shah Rukh and Aamir. In fact we have made a sort of happy family on the sets of Happy New Year. Shah Rukh, Deepika, Abhishek and Sonu, we all stick together, eat together and look forward to spending time together, which is fabulous.” mona@tribunemail.com

Young tune
Sunny Singh, the nephew of Sukhbir who once rocked the music scene with Ishq Tera Tadpave, is making a lot of waves with his live performances. He has already brought out two albums Ola Ole as well as Sunny Singh's Ik Glassy and is all set for releasing the third.
Music is in the blood of 30-year-old Sunny. “I grew up listening to Gurbani renditions by my grandfather. Some of my first lessons in music came from the brother of my grandfather, Preetam Singh. I also learnt a bit from my uncle Sukhbir,” he says. To start with, Sunny started singing at a restaurant in Jalandhar and later moved to Nairobi, Kenya. He spent three years in Kenya, got married and then brought out two music albums. He performed at different places in South Africa and Dubai, before heading back to Punjab. Here, he has performed at different places, including Mumbai, Nasik, Delhi, Gujarat and Kashmir. “I am heading to UK in a couple of months. Apart from performances in private and corporate parties, I keep going to Kenya for shows every couple of months,” he says. Sunny sings Bollywood numbers, but Sufi as well as folk songs of Punjab are close to his heart. He is now recording classic Punjabi songs by Asa Singh Mastana, Surinder Kaur and the other legendary singers with a Western music background. "People are forgetting the rich legacy of Punjabi music, so I sing some of these songs during my live performances," he says. The party scene in India is different from Africa, he shares. “People in Kenya appreciate and engage with music more during the parties, as the DJ culture is much less there. They prefer live singing instead. But here, you have to engage people more, interact with the audience and get them involved," says the singer. gurvinder@tribunemail.com

A whiff of white
Satish Narula Have you ever noticed that most of the fragrant flowers are white in colour? And this is true in case of shrubs, herbs, bulbs, climbers and even trees. Let us discuss some of these. Let us start with bulbs. The accompanying picture is of tuberose, the Rajnigandha. Have you thought how this name was given to this plant? The plant gives out fragrance at night as the flowers start opening after five in the evening and even a single stick bearing a bunch of flowers makes the entire area house a pocket of fragrance. The flowers in the bunch open in succession and it is because of this reason, that the bunch has a long vase life and keeps performing for a long time. The bulbs are planted during spring and give flowers through the summer and monsoon. The bulbs multiply very fast form a clump at the base. These clumps could be extracted once in three years to spread the area. The bulbs should be treated by dipping in bavistin for an hour or two. There is double flowering species too but that does not bear fragrance. If you value the tuberose for its size and want to opt for double type sacrificing fragrance then we suggest single type varieties, Nirantar and Prajaval that have almost similar sized blooms and are full of fragrance. We told you about the cause of naming tuberose as Rajnigandha. Similar is the reason for naming the fragrant Raat-ki-Rani. This shrub also bears white flowers in the evening hours as that is the time when the flowers open and spread the eternal fragrance. And what about snakes that come with this plant? There is no proof to suggest association of a snakes and this shrub. Any corner or debris that you leave unattended in the garden may have one. A small bulb to a tree, now we talk about Plumeria, the Firangipani. Also, called the pagoda tree, it has bunch of fragrant flowers growing at the tip of twigs. The common pagoda tree could be deciduous, that sheds leaves during the winter but the species does not do so and keeps its shining deep green and prominently veined leaves intact. The fragrance in this case is binding. The tree comes in many a shade but the fragrance is prominent in the white ones. Jasmine (motia) is another white flowering and fragrant shrub. This finds favour with women for gajra making especially those from South India. There are climbers too that bear white and yellow flowers. The shrub and climber are both free flowering. It’s pouring beer
The Beer Café launched its Chandigarh outlet in a unique way with Brews Cruise. Guests were taken through a beer appreciation session to understand the different kinds of beers available and the history of how this great beverage was created. To kick off the event, guests were taken through the process of Perfect Pour for beers followed by the beer tasting. The first in line was a quirky and refreshing Hoegaarden draught beer, which gave a taste of slight orange and coriander. Moving on to the next one, Erdinger Dunkel, a smooth and rich dark wheat beer. The wheat beers were compared to Stella Artois, a lager beer to understand the differences between the wheat and lager. A round of fish fingers, chicken satay and nachos complementing the beers were served. The next round of beers started off with Corona, which is light on palate. Changing the taste, Erdinger draught beer was freshly poured from the tap. Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc concluded the round with a slight sweetness on the palate.
The Beer Café offers a chance to re-discover the love of beer with it's special RFID activated PYOB (Pour Your Own Beer) cards, using which you can recharge once and enjoy the beers on each visit. With ice-cold draught beer taps and beer tanks, the café promises to provide customers a unique experience on every visit. Says Rahul Singh, founder and CEO, The Beer Café, "The Beer Café has been the first in the country to bring over 50 varieties of beers from different parts of the world under one roof. We believed in having a place that is welcoming and allows friends and acquaintances to meet over a pint of beer." — TNS

Driving force
Jasreman Maken, 19, who is currently pursuing her bachelor's degree in Arts from MCM DAV College, says, "Dress designing is my passion. Since childhood, I have been fond of cars and I love to go for long drives with my friends." While she swifts through the city roads on her Landrover, which she says is one of her priced possessions, she flies high on confidence and that makes all the difference. "What matters is that one should have the ability to carry oneself with confidence and have a positive attitude towards life. Your individual style would come along!" she shares.
Describe your sense of style… Floral prints dominate my wardrobe. Multiple hues, tie-and-dyes and neon shades are my favourites. I believe that one should not copy the trends blindly. Always wear what suits your body and enhances your personality. Latest addition in the wardrobe… I recently bought a dress by Allen Solly. Brand freak or street smart? I like to buy whatever catches my eye and is unique but I never compromise on quality. Choose one-sporty, glamorous or chic I would go with chic since I like to try out new trends and keep my wardrobe updated! Your style icon… I am in awe of Kareena Kapoor because of her spectacular fashion sense! Who's the worst dressed celebrity around and why? It has to be Lady Gaga because her outfits are horrendous! One fashion trend you don't understand… The loose-fitted Harem pants for women is a trend that goes over my head. It looks totally ridiculous! Your take on accessories… Accessories should complement your outfit. If your outfit is elaborate then wear minimal accessories. Otherwise a decent watch or a fancy clutch is good to go. One thing that boosts your confidence and why? Since I am wild about driving, I love it when people compliment my driving skills. It really boosts my confidence. You would love to be dressed up by… Betsey Johnson. One fragrance that you can swear by… Tresor Midnight Rose by Lancôme. — As told to Amarjor Kaur |

Get connected
Chandigarh Gets High Speed Internet With 4G LTE Nishtha Shukla Anand For all those who want better connectivity and faster internet, Chandigarh now has a solution! We will have access to 4G, which is the next generation in mobile communications. Tricity is the fourth place in the city to get 4G after Kolkata, Pune and Bengaluru. This means you will have much faster connectivity even on the go. This broadband internet gives you download speed of up to 40 Mbps. This means you can surf conveniently even on your phone or iPad. Airtel has rolled out this facility for users in the Tricity-Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula with a 4G speed of up to 10Mbps. This is a great way to get wireless internet access at home or gain better access to multi-media content such as movies and music. Uploading and downloading heavier files will also be earlier with 4G internet content. Do you have a Smart TV that you are unable to use? You can do it now because 4G enables online streaming. Playing online on your Xbox or PS2 also becomes easy with 4G. If you watch movies online, you can watch them with 4G sans any buffering time. You will also be able to make calls online much easily and without those irksome hindrances. To gain access to such lightening fast internet, you need a 4G LTE enabled device, USIM and a data plan. This can be gained with the use of dongles or Indoor CPE. (Anand is a technology expert) |

Mexican mauj!
Kandla Nijhowne Give me tangy tomatoes, the sharpness of hot chillies, sweet bursts of corn, soft-cooked beans, fragrant cumin and cinnamon, a scattering of cheese and voila! We can have a perfect Mexican dish. A Mexican casserole has easily available ingredients, most suited to our palate and purse. Corn, beans (rajmah)and chillies are the mainstay of a Mexican dish, flavoued with spices like cumin and cinnamon. Cheese add a richness in taste which we all love. As discussed in my last article, a taco seasoning comes in handy to flavour your dish, adding just the right authentic taste. A casserole can also be made sans meats with veggie additions of your choice. Top up with nacho chips for a crunch!

Rekha to return to silver screen
We all know that UTV Motion Pictures had earlier approached Sridevi to star in their upcoming ambitious film Fitoor. But due some reasons, the English Vinglish actress didn't take it up. Now the latest buzz is that the makers have offered the same role to the evergreen actress Rekha who was last seen in the 2010 dud, Sadiyaan. She will play the role of Miss Havisham, a cold-hearted, rich spinster. To their surprise, the veteran actress has not only given a nod to the project but has signed it too. Fitoor is a romantic film that is said to be an adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic Great Expectations. The story is based on an orphan Pip who falls in love with a wealthy, heartless girl named Estella. The film stars Aditya Roy Kapur and Katrina Kaif in the lead. While Aditya will essay the role of the Pip, the orphan boy Katrina will play the character of Estella. Director Abhishek Kapoor plans to put his project on the floors sometime later this year.
Madhuri can fight
Actress Madhuri Dixit's trainer Kanishka Sharma, who has choreographed her stunts in Gulaab Gang, is all praise for the Bollywood icon saying she made some tiring action sequences look effortless on screen. "I remember a scene where Madhuri had to twist a man's arm and kick him hard. I rehearsed with her for a few hours before the shot, but was a little apprehensive. Later, I was shocked at how comfortably she pulled it off. She makes all my otherwise tiring action look effortless on screen," Kanishka said. The brief given to Kanishka by director Soumik Sen was to design the stunts in a manner that they look both aesthetic as well as realistic. "It couldn't be as gritty as Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon neither could it be as suave as the Matrix," he said. Abhay is not arrogant: Preeti
Preeti Desai will be seen in this week's release One By Two which stars and is produced by her boyfriend Abhay Deol. She talks about movies and marriage. Abhay the person
He is not arrogant. I think he is reserved, private. People judge him from outside but when they get to know him they get a different perception about him. We are both different individuals and have our own taste, so we don't always agree on things. I go and ask him his opinion. We discuss things, but at the end of the day I always make my own choice. Learning curve
I have seen him praise everybody else. I don't know if he praises me behind my back or not, he has definitely never praised me. The first shot we did together, there was nervousness in me because I wanted to impress him. I wanted his approval. That was initial stage, but then it was comfortable once I switched into the character... I think you are constantly learning things, I feel I have lots to learn. Marriage plans
I feel like I am just starting off with this right now, I want to achieve so much. We are happy and secure with each other... Marriage is a full time job and I need to be ready for that part of my life, but right now I just want to do good work.

Kalki’s beauty regime
Kalki Koechlin is an acclaimed actress. She has a quirky sense of style and has good hair and skin too. She shares her beauty and style secrets. Simple living
I wouldn't say I'm a tomboy now, but I guess I'm low maintenance. I wear flip- flops all the time, and no make-up if I can help it, especially if I'm at home. I don't like the feeling of make-up on my face when I'm not working. No smoking, no coffee
I swear by drinking lots water and not smoking. I stopped smoking about three years ago and I noticed a huge difference in my skin, but for this film (Jia Aur Jia), my character smokes quite a lot. And since we were in Sweden, where it was freezing, we ended up having a drink every evening! I noticed that the combination of both wasn't great for my skin, but now that I'm back my skin has gone back to normal. I avoid coffee. I used to drink it non-stop and it gave me this really nervous energy. Besides, it's not good for your skin. I drink a lot of green tea instead. Sun block
I swim every day. When I'm swimming or on an outdoor shoot I make sure that I'm wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. If I do get sunburned, I apply organic, cold pressed coconut oil all over my skin because it really calms it down. It also keeps it from becoming red and painful, which is something that tends to happen when you get burnt. Hair care
My hair is pretty low maintenance. I shampoo my hair with Paul Mitchell's Shampoo Three, which is an anti-chlorine shampoo. It's great because I swim every day, and it also gets rid of pollution. As an actor I think my hair goes through a lot of trauma, so I oil it once a week with argan oil. The oil is quite thick and it really gets rid of all the dryness, especially if I leave it on overnight or even just for a few hours. It makes hair really glossy too. I use a Moroccan Oil leave-in treatment after shampoo. Skin deep
My mum sent me some great organic spirulina capsules that I now take every day. I'm not really one for supplements because I eat raw fruits and vegetables then I'm fine, but this has made a huge, noticeable difference to my energy levels and my skin. When I get a pimple once or twice a month, I use tea-tree oil and it dries it out. Sometimes, toothpaste works too.

Big break
Rajan Shahi has launched so many fresh faces in the industry, including Angad Hasija, Hina Khan and Sara Khan. Now, he has launched five new faces in the latest show Aur Pyar Ho Gaya. Parichay Sharma, who plays Abhaas, is very happy with Shahi for giving him the big break. He says, "Rajan Shahi is like a God for me. I respect him a lot; it's an honour to work with him, he is a fantastic person. He appreciates all the aspiring actors. Luckily, I got a call for an audition. After innumerable tests, I was finally selected to play Abhaas." —

Work is worship
Delhi girl Payal Rajput has won the hearts of millions with the role of Sia in the popular show Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Her Hai. The television industry is buzzing with excitement about the performance of talented actor. She has made her name as the ideal bahu on this show. She talks about the show, her character and more. How has your journey been so far? It has been really good. Sapno Se Bhare Naina was my bench mark and with Aakhir Bahu Bhi….' I am doing a show with good storyline. How do you feel being part
of the show? It has been a great experience for me, working with some renowned theatre artistes such as Prachee Pathak. Has it been easy for you to do Sia? I think every actor should be able to do any role. Nevertheless, my role has helped me. Sia represents a young woman with self-respect. What is the concept of this show? The show is different from earlier saas-bahu shows. It is based on the eternal concept of how the betis and bahus are treated differently in our society. What got you interested? It was primarily the script and I believe that it is the most challenging role for me. As a performer, this show stretched me beyond anything I have done before. Is there a lot of pressure on television actors to deliver
good results? I feel when a show is good, nothing else matters. Pressure is always there because we work for more than 25 days in a month. What is your success mantra? Keep it cool. —

Character calling
Vaishnavi Dhanraj, fondly remembered as Janvi of Laado, is playing Hidimba and Mohini in Siddharth Kumar Tewary's Mahabharat. She took up the role because it is creatively challenging and interesting. Little did she know that the elaborate and extreme costumes of Hidimba will end up scaring her! Vaishnavi agreed to her body being painted black as the character demanded, but after looking at herself she was disappointed as she looked too ugly. But being a professional she quoted, "I was naturally very disappointed when my finished look made me look horrendous, but the whole cast and crew around me assured that I looked perfect for my character." The professional actress doesn't mind looking scary for the character's perfection, besides it relieves her that she gets to play the beautiful Mohini, which more or less makes up for the ugly side!
Selling point
For the new Colors show Mission Sapne, Ronit Roy went on to sell wares on a cart in Lucknow. He had to generate funds for charity to help a 60-year-old man suffering from a liver disease. Other than Ronit, Harbhajan Singh and Varun Dhawan too have shot for the show.
