Heroin worth Rs 5 crore seized
: In a joint operation, the Punjab Police and the BSF recovered 1 kg of heroin valued around Rs 5 crore from DT Mal area along the India-Pakistan border. A pistol was also seized. The police have launched a major search operation.

HC rejects Tytler’s plea for early hearing
: The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to stay the CBI probe against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a 1984 anit-Sikh riots case and declined to entertain his plea for an early hearing of his appeal against the trial court's order for investigation. It also rejected Tytler’s plea for fixing his appeal for hearing in March, considering the Lok Sabha elections, and fixed the hearing for April 17.

Hindi play to be staged on Jan 19
: The Harpal Tiwana Foundation will stage a Hindi comedy play “Koi Baat Chale” at Harpal Tiwana Centre for Performing Arts here on January 19. Bollywood actor Yashpal Sharma will be the lead artist. The play is about an unmarried school drama teacher, who seeks help of a marriage bureau to help him find a life partner.

Two get 10-yr RI in  drug haul case
: A fast-track court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Harish Anand on Thursday awarded 10-year Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to two Morinda residents in a drug haul case. The convicts are Kuldeep Singh and Gurpreet Singh. Police had arrested Kuldeep with 2,000 tablets and seven bottles of drugs on December 18, 2009. Gurpreet was arrested with 30 bottles of drugs and 600 tablets on June 5, 2010. He will also undergo two years’ sentence under the Drug and Cosmetics Act.

2 kg charas seized:
The police seized 2 kg of charas from a passenger travelling in a Nayagran-Palampur bound HRTC bus, a police report said in Dalhousie. The police recovered the charas from the luggage of a passenger identified as Nek Raj. He was arrested. A case under NDPS Act was registered. — OC
