Protesters block Patiala road for 4 hours

Dera Bassi, January 11
Members of the Bhalai Manch, Banur, which is protesting against the Administration seeking proper supply of drinking water and emergency services at the local Civil Hospital, today blocked traffic on the Chandigarh-Patiala road for four hours.

The blockade caused long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road.

Shanty Thamman, the president of the Bhalai Manch who is sitting on fast-unto-death in support of the demands, said they lifted the blockade after the Administration assured that the demands would be met soon. Notably, other social organisations in the area and political parties have been providing support to the agitation.

Shanty Thamman said though they had lifted the blockade, he would continue his fast till the demands were met.

Meanwhile, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Lakhmir Singh said tenders had been allotted for setting up of tubewells to ensure proper supply of water and emergency services would be provided in the Civil Hospital from January 13.

Other problems being witnessed by area residents would also be resolved soon, he added.

Among those present at the protest were Gurjeet Kaur, Usha Sharma, Raj Rani, Kishore Kumar, Vishavjeet and Preetinder Singh.

Three vehicles stolen in city

Chandigarh, January 11
Three incidents of vehicle thefts have been reported from different parts of the city. Manpreet Singh, a resident of Police Lines in Sector 26, reported that someone had stolen his motorcycle from the Sukhna Lake parking on January 10.

A case at the Sector 3 police station has been registered. In another incident, Gagandeep Singh, a resident of Sector 29, reported that someone had stolen his motorcycle from the Sector 20 market. A case at the Sector 19 police station has been registered. The third incident of vehicle theft was reported in Sector 55. Complainant Shikha Ghuman, a resident of Sector 55, reported that her scooter was stolen from outside her house. A case at Sector 39 police station has been registered.

Man booked for eve-teasing

A case of eve-teasing has been registered against Arshdeep, a resident of Bhalla village of Ferozepur district, who eve-teased a girl near Piccadily Cinema on January 10. The accused was arrested and a case at Sector 34 police station has been registered.

One held for gambling

The Chandigarh Police today arrested Narinder Kumar, a resident of Burail village, while playing satta at the village and recovered Rs. 1,270 from his possession. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered at the Sector 34 police station. The police are probing the matter.

Theft bid at shop

Zirakpur, January 11
Two unidentified miscreants made a futile burglary attempt at Unique Electro World on the Zirakpur-Chandigarh road here early morning today. Before they could steal any valuable from the shop, labourers nearby raised an alarm prompting them to flee from from the spot.

Shop owner Anuj Behl claimed that he got the information from a labourer around 5.30 am that two miscreants were trying to break the shutter locks of his shop. He said the thieves broke all locks but failed to cut the inner lock of the shutter.

Anuj said the labourer informed him that thieves came in a Maruti 800 car, which was without registration number, adding that he has informed the police about the theft bid.

The police said they have got the information and a case would be registered after a complaint was lodged in this regard.

Alert woman foils snatching bid

Panchkula, January 11
An alert resident of Sector 15, Panchkula, saved a part of her gold chain this morning when two bike-borne snatchers targeted her. Sensing their act, she held on to her chain firmly and resisted.

“The incident took place when victim Kusum was going home after buying vegetables. The two bike-borne youths who followed her tried to snatch her gold chain, but she held on to it firmly. The chain broke and she was able to save a major part of the chain”, said a police official.

“The by-standers immediately called up the police, but till then the youths had fled,” said Raj Kumar, a local resident.

It was recently when a purse of a woman was snatched in broad daylight at Sector 11. It was after the intervention of AAP workers that the “reluctant” police officials filed a case.

Top seed Teeradon suffers a fall
Fourth seed Xander Veys shows Thailand boy the door in the singles’ final

Fourth seed Xander Veys of Belgium defeated top seed Teeradon Tortrakul in the boys’ singles category during the final of the ITF Grade-3 Junior World Ranking Tournament, In the girls’ category, Indian contender Pranjala Yadlapalli beat Thailand’s Bunyawi Thamchaiwat. Both the matches were decided in a three-set clash.

In the boys’ final, Xander took the first set tiebreaker whereas his top seed rival Teeradon Tortrakul claimed the second set at 7-5. In the final set, Xander with his aggressive groundstrokes conceded one game.

He upset top seed at 6-1. Xander named the match at 7-6(3), 5-7 and 6-1. In the girls’ singles, seventh seed Thai girl Bunyawi Thamchaiwat played some good down the line shots. She claimed the first set at 6-3. But in the second set, Pranjala fought back and managed to attain a point on every shot. She claimed the second set at 6-2.

In the final set, Pranjala took an early lead at 3-0 and maintained it till the end of the game. CLTA patron-in-chief Rajan Kashyap and president Jai Singh Gill awarded the winners.

Boys final (singles): Xander Veys bt Teeradon Tortrakul 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-1; girls final (singles): Pranjala Yadlapalli bt Bunyawi Thamchaiwat 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Tennis: Shreya Jain bites dust

The combined junior tennis meet for boys and girls began at Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, today. The championship is being organised by the Ideal Tennis Academy. In the combined U-12 category, Shreya Jain defeated Jai Dogra 5-3, however in the second round she tasted defeat at 5-0.

Cricket meet
Facile win for FCI

Mohali, January 11
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) won the first match during the ongoing Corporate Cricket Tournament being held at Yadavindra Public School, Mohali. The FCI defeated the Association of Basic Medical Scientists, PGI, by 134 runs. Batting first, the FCI posted 193 runs for six wickets in the allotted 20 overs. For the FCI, Raghav scored a quick fire 67 off 33 balls while Arpit contributed 44 off 61.

Kulwinder scored 16 runs. For the Association of Basic Medical Scientists, Ravi claimed three wickets while Karan Thakur claimed two wickets.

Chasing the target, the FCI could manage to score 59 runs for nine wickets. For the Association of Basic Medical Scientists, Manoj and Vivek scored 19 runs and 15 runs, respectively. For the FCI, Kulwinder claimed 4 for 12 while Ravinder claimed 3 for 21. Arun Sharma claimed one wicket. Raghav from the FCI was adjudged the man of match. He scored 67 runs and claimed one wicket.

PU gatka teams stand out Tribune News Service

Panjab University gatka teams stood out during the All-India Inter-University Gatka Prize Money Tournament for Men and Women. The meet concluded today. The women’s team finished as first runners-up while the men’s team finished as attained second runners-up.

The women’s team comprised Harpreet Kaur, Manjit Kaur, Harjinder Kaur, Kulvir Kaur, Arshpreet Kaur, Kavita, Neeu Rani, Charanjeet Kaur and Baljeet Kaur while members of the the men’s team were Ramanpreet Singh, Amandeep Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Lovepreet Singh, Amrit Pal Singh, Maninder Singh, Gurjeet Singh, Dhyan Singh and Manpreet Singh.
