New York, January 4
People across the northeastern United States on Friday dug out after a heavy snowfall that grounded thousands of flights, closed schools and government offices, killed 13 people and left the region in the grip of bitter cold.

Boston was hard hit by the first major winter storm of 2014, getting nearly 18 inches of snow, while some towns of New England's largest city saw close to 2 feet of accumulation. Major cities from Washington, DC, to Portland, Maine, were slammed, with New York’s Manhattan Island getting 6-inch snow.

Some 3,467 flights were cancelled on Friday across the United States and 12,394 were delayed with Philadelphia and Newark airports hardest hit, according to FlightAware.com. Airports across the region warned travelers to expect residual delays as they cleared a backlog of flights.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio urged New Yorkers to exercise "extreme caution" and limit exposure outdoors. Overnight wind chills could push temperatures below zero degrees, leading to frostbite or hypothermia for anyone exposed to the cold for extended periods.

The National Weather Service said on the heels of the departing Northeast winter storm is yet another powerful blast of winter over the weekend. The storm will bring blizzard conditions and extreme cold to parts of northern Plains and Midwest.

Significant snow is forecast from the central Plains to the Great Lakes as the bitter cold spreads eastward. Media reports said at least 13 people have died due to the winter storm, with several deaths occurring because of bad conditions on the roadways.

Windchill readings could hit minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit in New York City, Boston and Philadelphia and a new arctic plunge was expected to hit the Midwest and the Northeast next week, bringing subzero temperatures. New York City was pummelled with 6-inch snow and 33 mile per hour wind gusts.

Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency and ordered three major highways, stretching from Long Island to Albany, to close overnight during the height of the storm. — Agencies

On poll eve, Bangladesh witnesses rise in violence

Dhaka, January 4
Renewed violence on the eve of Bangladesh's general election left at least two persons dead today as opposition activists set afire 38 polling centres and a train while enforcing a 48-hour nationwide strike aimed at derailing the controversial polls.

The main opposition BNP called the strike from this morning in a last ditch effort to scuttle the polls, which the Awami League looks set to win due to a boycott by opposition parties.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party urged voters to "fully boycott" what its chief Khaleda Zia described as a "stigmatised farce". She accused the government of keeping her under "house arrest". An Awami League activist and a BNP worker were killed as violence erupted in parts of Bangladesh after the 18-party opposition alliance led by the BNP began enforcing the strike. Suspected activists of BNP and its fundamentalist ally Jamaat-e-Islami set on fire 38 polling centres in several districts, including Dhaka, during a span of 12 hours.

Reports said unidentified men torched makeshift polling centres, mostly housed in schools, after Zia called for protests to be intensified. — PTI

Musharraf’s fate to be decided by court: Sharif

Islamabad, January 4
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif today said Pervez Musharraf's fate will be decided by a special court as both the state and the Constitution were party to the former Pakistani dictator's trial on charges of high treason.

"Since the matter is sub-judice, any comment from my side may not be appropriate. However, other than the case's merit, I do say that the real petitioners in this case are the state and the Constitution of Pakistan," Sharif told a news channel.

Pak: No time-frame yet for Indian PM’s visit
Afzal Khan in Islamabad

Pakistan has welcomed Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement of possible visit to Pakistan before he completes his tenure in office.

On reports about Singh's likely visit to Pakistan, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said he would be welcomed.

"There is an outstanding invitation to the Indian prime minister which was extended to him by Pakistan and was accepted .We don't have any time-frame for the visit as yet. Obviously we would welcome the visit," she said.

While addressing a rare news conference in New Delhi, Singh was asked why he never visited Pakistan during his tenure as Prime Minister. "I still have not given up hope of going to Pakistan before I complete my tenure as Prime Minister," Singh replied.

"I would very much like to go to Pakistan. I was born in a village which is now part of West Punjab but as Prime Minister of the country I should go to visit Pakistan when conditions are appropriate to achieve solid results," he added.

Iraqi forces kill 55 Al-Qaida fighters

Kirkuk (Iraq), January 4
Iraqi security forces killed 55 Al-Qaida-linked fighters in two areas in Anbar province on today, the commander of the country's ground forces told AFP.

“Dozens of armed men were killed tonight in two security operations," Staff General Ali Ghaidan Majeed said. Near the city of Ramadi, "the first targeted groups from ISIL in Albufaraj, leading to the killing of 25," he said, referring to the Al-Qaida affiliated Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. And "a large gathering of ISIL members was targeted near Garma, killing 30,” Majeed added, referring to an area near Fallujah.

Parts of Ramadi and Fallujah, west of Baghdad, have been held by militants for days, harkening back to the years after the 2003 US-led invasion when both cities were insurgent strongholds.

Fighting erupted in the Ramadi area Monday, when security forces removed the main anti-government protest camp set up after demonstrations erupted in late 2012 against what Sunni Arabs say is the marginalisation of their community. — AFP

Indian on Interpol list for wife's murder

Singapore, January 4
An Indian, the husband of a beautician whose decapitated body was found in a canal in Singapore, is now on Interpol's wanted list.

The Singapore police have been looking for 34-year-old Harvinder Singh to help in their investigations into the death of his wife Jasvinder Kaur, 33, who worked as a beautician here.

Harvinder, said to be from Kurukshetra in Haryana, had left Singapore via a checkpoint about half an hour before his wife's body was discovered, The Straits Times reported today.

A fork lift driver Gursharan Singh, 25, has been charged with Kaur's murder and remanded for psychiatric assessment.

The police had previously said Gursharan was a friend of Harvinder, who worked as senior logistics coordinator. All three are Indian nationals. Gursharan is accused of killing Kaur with an unknown man sometime between December 10 and December 12. If convicted, Gursharan faces capital punishment. The case will be mentioned in court again on January 17.

The police found Kaur's trash bag-wrapped decapitated body floating in Whampoa river on December 12. The deceased's head was missing and both hands were severed at the wrists. Kaur's identity was established through forensic means. — PTI
