Artistic applause
Exhibitions, workshops, theatre, dance, music, literature... the art scene in Chandigarh rocked in the year gone by. In 2014, many more horizons are there to be conquered...

A still Prayer from fotocause Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time…wrote Thomas Merton in No Man Is an Island.

Chandigarh folks must get ready to find some and lose some as the art calendar for the first quarter of the year looks pretty promising. Audiences have come back to Tagore and art lovers are thronging the meets that bring the best of artistes. Year 2013 ended on a high note, which has put those behind the curtains in an overdrive to make the city a melting pot of different art forms.

Neat strokes

The art scene in the city is thriving today. "Check any art gallery in the city, it's full around the year," says Diwan Manna, chairperson, Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi. The Akademi is going to bring forth the Annual Art Exhibition in February. Gear up to watch Sohan Qadri's paintings in March. There will also be a slide lecture and a national event that will bring many artistes to the city. Then there are awards, scholarships and an art appreciation course in February as well.

Kalapini Komkali will be in Chandigarh for a workshop and performance

Play on

Theatre has really gained momentum and even the coming year is going to bring in a treat for theatre-lovers. Currently, community centres in Sector 37 and 47 are on with workshops for kids that run till January 12 (one can enrol still). February is going to be exciting for kids as Chandigarh International Puppet Theatre Festival will be held in collaboration with Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust. The five-day fest will have international artistes and one day for traditional puppetry in the country, with double shows on weekend. Seven states with seven plays would be in the City Beautiful towards the end of the month for Theatre for Theatre's Winter Festival. You can catch on Miyan Ki Jooti from Ujjain, MP and Batvare Ke Aag from Allahabad, UP, amongst others.

TFT will bring on Basant Festival in the following month. "Now that audiences have found the way to Tagore, we are hoping for ticketed shows for plays this year. Theatre needs to be ticketed for it to sustain," says Kuldip Sharma, director, Tagore Theatre.

Melodious note

Reaching out to the young is what the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi is aiming at. Not only is the Akademi organising dance and music performances, but also interactions and workshops. "Once the young have been part of an experience, it stays with them," says GS Channi, chairperson, Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi. January will have Children's Theatre Festival at Sector 17 Plaza, which will stage plays prepared during the workshops in different city schools. Music lovers will have Dhrupad workshop by Sunita Amin in early February and a vocal music workshop by Kalapini Komkali in mid-March; there is Danzlenz — a workshop in Dance Video Making, film screenings in mid-Jan by Canadian filmmakers and a workshop in Contemporary Dance by Navtej Johar, which will be held in mid-March. Then there is a mime workshop and plenty of plays, including Notes on Chai by Jyoti Dora on February 1, Mohen Jo Daro by Ashok Banthia on March 1 and Clowns Cry for the Moon, a children's play by Khilona, New Delhi, on April 5.

Folk flavour
Manpriya Singh

It's a play on the word that's been the most played, often repeated and always worked upon by the folk artists. It's hard not to give into the pull of the ultimate muse because Jugni belongs to everybody. Just as we've stopped tuning into one version of it, it's time to revisit the "eternal firefly" that fits into all the cultural situations. "Jugni is a folk word. It doesn't have a writer and being a folk song, it belongs to everybody. I have sung it in my way," shares Paramjit Singh Sidhu, better known as Pammi Bai, of his recent album Meri Jugni.

The song's been touched upon in a yet another different way but still in sync with his personal philosophies. "My biggest endeavour has always been to reflect the culture and language of Punjab. I am strictly against nudity. Any song that the family members have to switch off in each other's presence is a strict no." He adds, "I always try to spread my culture, language and its folk songs in the world."

The release of the poster coincides with the digital release on YouTube, "You can't ignore the Internet in today's times. Nobody goes and buys CDs. The music shops have been literally shut down." The album has eight songs in total, each bringing in a different flavour. "The album's been conceived in a way that people find it different. It's an attempt at bringing folk in a yet another new way." The album's been released by the company Live Folk Studio and stays on the lines of Coke Studio. He adds, "We've featured live folk artistes. They are even dressed in folk attires."

It's a career spanning 12 albums and two decades. A couple of things are a given; a message, a purpose and an attempt to give meaning to music. "There's one song titled Koi Na, which speaks against the Delhi Gang Rape Victim. It deals with different social vices in each stanza. The other one's against corruption and yet another one speaks of drugs menace," he shares, while playing the songs. Some of the lyrics justify the past one year spent working on the album.

First day first show
The week belongs to Mitty
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Walter Mitty is a fictional character in James Thurber's short story, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty that was first published in The New Yorker in 1939 and in book form in My World and Welcome to It in 1942. Thurber loosely based the character on his friend, Walter Mithoff. It was made into a film in 1947, with a remake directed by and starring Ben Stiller released in 2013. Mitty is a meek, mild man with a vivid imagination. He imagines himself to be a wartime pilot, an emergency-room surgeon, and a devil-may-care killer. The character's name has come into more general use to refer to an ineffectual dreamer, appearing in several dictionaries. Although the story has humorous elements, there is a darker and more significant message underlying the text, leading to a more tragic interpretation of the Mitty character. In the brief snatches of reality that punctuate Mitty's fantasies the audience meets well-meaning but insensitive strangers who inadvertently rob Mitty of some of his remaining dignity.

Brilliant job

The film is brilliant and I really like the screenplay. Every scene and every frame of the film was incredibly well done. It makes up for a non-descript plot and I think Ben Stiller has done a cool job in the film too. It's certainly a must watch.

Lovable Mitty

I like the film. It's interesting and it keeps you glued to the seats. Stiller's sensibility creates a movie that's smarter than you think it will be. I kind of like Walter Mitty himself.

Mr Joe B. Carvalho

Mr Joe B. Carvalho is a Bollywood comedy film. The film is directed by Samir Tewari, and produced by Shital Malviya and Bhola Ram Malviya (Arshad Warsi's long standing secretary). The film stars Arshad Warsi, Soha Ali Khan, Javed Jaffrey and Vijay Raaz. The first teaser of the film was released on November 17. The film also has guest appearances by Geeta Basra and Karishma Kotak. Singer Babul Supriyo debuts in the film by playing a cameo.

Such a waste

I really think that the makers need to work out on the way they have presented the story of the film. It's a complete waste of time. Also, I think that this is a complete waste of Arshad Warsi's acting talent too.

Shataki Kaul, student

Dull offering

I did not like the movie at all. The film does not even have a decent story, or dialogues or even acting for that matter. I have no idea of what kept happening in the movie. It was full of flaws and dull moments. Not worth a watch.

Abhishekh Anand, student

Sholay 3D

Sholay is a 1975 action-adventure Hindi film directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father G P Sippy. The film follows the story of two criminals, Veeru and Jai (played by Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan), hired by a retired police officer (Sanjeev Kumar) to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan). Hema Malini and Jaya Bhaduri also star, as Veeru and Jai's love interests.

Interesting technique

It's a new medium and an old movie, which we have all watched so many times before. I like the fact that they have introduced 3D effect to Sholay, which makes it look more real perhaps, but also, I think it was not really required because classic films don't require renovation.

Shaurya Vir Singh, student

Good show

I like the film. It's one of the finest Indian films and it is available in 3D. What more can our generation possibly ask for?

Film: Bade Changey Ney Mere Yaar Kaminey
Director: Munish Sharma
Cast: Karan Kundra, Inderjeet Nikku, Gaurav Kakkar, Sonia Mann, Isha Rikki, Kajal Jain *
Rating:

This is the opening Punjabi film of 2014, and what an opening! Some people never learn. No amount of learning from other people's experience or no amount of 'watch your step' advice comes to any help.

Bade Changey Ney Mere Yaar Kaminey, directed by Munish Sharma, still works on the 'let's laugh' formula, which is only making us cry. Boasting of a multi-star cast with Karan Kundra, Inderjeet Nikku, Gaurav Kakkar, Sonia Mann, Isha Rikki, Kajal Jain, the film offers a wholesome package of irritating to the core, out of place, out of shape punches.

Well, we make things easier for you. If you have seen the first part of Masti, the adult comedy movie, you can conveniently miss Bade Changey Ney Mere Yaar Kaminey for it is a bad rehashed version of it.

The director, story and screenplay writer found an easy way out. They must have had to shell out an odd Rs 100 for getting the DVD of Masti, must have watched it scene by scene, made their notes…. and there they were ready with BCNMYK. So, this goes without saying the director's job is reduced to half. However, the sad part is it is not even a decent copy.

Three friends, better still kaminey friends, after marriage decide to spice up their life, a little fun, a little adultery, some punches, some songs, some melodrama, some double-meaning jokes and end with that 'all is well that ends well' attitude.

The movie stars Karan Kundra, the good looking actor who has been hosting Channel V's Gumrah for a long time, and this guy definitely needs to work on the acting front. As for Inderjeet Nikku, the singer actor is just about tolerable. An actor should be like an actor; you can either be Nawazuddin Sidiqui or a Hrithik Roshan! Gaurav Kakkar is the other actor who is stuck in the Bollywood ishtyle. As for the three actress. .… Rabba tu hi bacha! You don't need stars to make a successful film, you need a good script, good dialogues, real comedy…. a miss in this film for sure. The director and actors make a desperate attempt to crack jokes, to look sad, to feel romantic, but it doesn't work. The film is not fast, it isn't slow, it just moves, and it doesn't matter even if it didn't.

The music is only good enough to tap your fingers.

STAR TRACK
Movie treat in store
The year 2014 is finally here and it is a big year for Bollywood. We bring you a list of movies to look forward to in 2014

Gunday

Ranveer Singh is talented and sets the screen on fire. He has great chemistry with new-BFF Arjun Kapoor. Priyanka Chopra turns up the heat as a cabaret dancer. A film with a title Gunday may not be quite suitable for a Valentine's Day release. Still we want to see this masala flick!

Bang Bang

Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif fill in for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, respectively, in the official Indian remake of Knight and Day. The film has been shot in exotic locations and should be a fun ride.

Jai Ho

Salman Khan has given five back-to-back Rs 100 crore plus blockbusters and his next is bound to be much anticipated. Even more so, since he did not have a release last year. The promos have been well received.

Happy New Year

Farah Khan is back in her element with Shah Rukh Khan post Om Shanti Om. The film has an interesting cast barring Abhishek Bachchan. Farah knows how to make fun movies!

Bombay Velvet

Anurag Kashyap teams up with the ultra-talented Ranbir Kapoor and the versatile Anushka Sharma to make his big-budget period epic. This one is very promising.

PeeKay

Rajkumar Hirani directs Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma and Sushant Singh Rajput along with Sanjay Dutt in a highly mysterious movie. Aamir reportedly plays an alien. We are intrigued by this one.

When Deepika met Barjatya

Deepika Padukone has met with director-producer Sooraj Barjatya a couple of times and is likely to be finalised as the female lead for his next movie with Salman Khan. He was also there at her success bash.

Playing safe

Mallika Sherawat has apparently been playing safe. Sherawat, who was slammed with a court case after she wore a skimpy outfit for a New Year performance in 2006, has been performing abroad for last few years. The 37-year-old Murder actress performed in Canada this year for a New Year's Eve gala. Well as they say, better safe than sorry!

Aamir’s lucky month

Aamir Khan feels December end is lucky for him as he got married to wife Kiran in December 2005 and even his blockbuster films like Ghajini, 3 Idiots and Taare Zameen Par were released in December and now Dhoom 3 which has broken all records.

Sonu the watchdog

Sonu Sood is keeping the cast of Happy New Year fit on the set by ensuring they do not eat junk food and hiding chocolates away from them. He made everyone work out during the last schedule and will do so in the next schedule too.

Lone rangers

Arjun Rampal and wife Mehr Jessia along with their two daughters are holidaying alone in Dubai. Usually, they have been accompanied by Hrithik and Sussanne Roshan and Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan but equations have changed now.

John marries Priya!

Actor John Abraham has apparently married girlfriend Priya Runchal in a private ceremony recently with family and close friends in attendance.

The 41-year-old actor, who has been missing from the B-town, took to Twitter to wish his fans for the new year and wrote: "Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed 2014! May this year bring you love, good fortune and joy. Love, John and Priya Abraham."

Priya Runchal is an investment banker and she met the Madras Cafe actor through common friends in 2010. John Abraham was in a relationship with Bipasha Basu for almost 10 years before they called it quits.

Now a biopic on Tata

After the super success of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's 2013 hit Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, the making of biopics is catching up. Rumour has it that Emraan Hashmi is going to play the role of Mohd Azharuddin in a biopic which is being made on the ex-cricketer.

Taking a cue from it, actor John Abraham is likely to make a biopic on JRD Tata to be made under his own banner.

According to sources, Abraham has already registered three titles—JRD Tata, Tata Sons and Jamshed Ji.

It is said that since John's mother was a Parsi, he would be able to identify with the Parsi lifestyle. If all goes as planned, Shoojit Sircar will direct the film. However, Sircar said that nothing has been finalised or confirmed.

Shahid’s new muse?

Shahid Kapoor and Sonaksh Sinha have had a successful stint in R...Rajkumar and now it seems that they have taken their on-screen pairing to another level.

The actors got along while shooting for the movie and it seems they got close and a little extra friendly towards the end of the film and during promotions. Shahid has been linked with nearly all his co-stars from Kareena Kapoor Khan to Priyanka Chopra to Anushka Sharma and now Sonakshi.

Sonakshi, meanwhile, has stayed away from these rumours and has only been linked with Ranveer Singh. Shahid and Sonakshi made a mismatched couple on screen as she is much larger and taller than him and people have joked that she looks like his mother, given his boyish and youthful looks! Both of them were single at the time of shooting.

It seems there is truth in these rumours as the story has surfaced way after the release of the movie. A source tells us, "They have only started dating each other and are very fond of each other. They want to keep their romance under wraps for now as neither of them likes to talk about their relationships. It is just the beginning of their relationship and they do not know where it will go. They have only told a few close and common friends."

Well, if there is indeed a romance blossoming between them, then the movie has proved lucky for them personally and professionally.

Sanaya is upbeat

Sanaya Irani Sanaya Irani is back on television with a brand new show Rangrasiya. If the reactions of her fans on social networking sites are any indication, the show has caught their attention. Sanaya talks about it and more.

What is your role like?

My character Paro is a simple girl from a village, who is reserved and innocent. She ends up falling in love with the killer of her husband, but the why and how of it is the interesting part of the story.

What was special about Rangrasiya that you chose it?

The story; it is engaging, interesting and intense. The etched characters and exciting concept is the USP of the show. Of course, also the producer Saurabh Tewari and his production team who are passionate about the project and have been doing marvellous work.

How is it working with your co-star Ashish Sharma?

He's very talented, but an under-rated actor in the television industry. Having a professional and good actor in a show means a lot; it helps the project too. It's wonderful to work with him

Do you think taking up Chhanchhan was a mistake?

No. All shows in my life have taught me something and added to my career graph. I am happy with every show I have done including Chhanchaan, which led me to Rangrasiya.

You were offered Nach Baliye Season 6 and earlier Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa too. But you are stuck to serials. Why?

I would have loved to do both the shows, but they both were offered to me at times when I had another project in hand. I like focusing on one show at a time and reality shows need that kind of commitment, which I wasn't able to give. Hopefully, I will do them in the future. — HRM
