Man acquitted in robbery case

Chandigarh, January 2
A local court today acquitted a person in a case of robbery after the complainant turned hostile. The court acquitted Suraj, a resident of Kajheri, in the case.

2 arrested in burglary cases, stolen motorcycles recovered

Chandigarh, January 2
The UT police today arrested two burglars who had burgled a house in Sector 37 on New Year’s Eve and recovered the entire stolen property from their possession. The accused have been identified as Sameer and Rohit Sharma, both residents of Kansal village in Mohali district. The two had decamped with five water taps, a Titan watch and some documents from house number 1447, Sector-37/C, Chandigarh.

On December 31, Raj Kumar had complained to the police regarding burglary in his house which happened while he was away to Shimla.

The further interrogation of the accused led to the recovery of four motor cycles and one mobile phone stolen by them from different places. Many cases registered at the police stations of Sector 39 and Sector 11 have been worked out with their arrest.

The police produced the accused before a local court that remanded them in two days’ police custody.

FB friend physically assaults girl

Panchkula, January 2
Friendship with an unknown man has landed a Panchkula-based girl in trouble. She was physically assaulted by her Facebook friend at a rented accommodation in Sector 21 here.

A 28-year-old girl, in her complaint to the police, has alleged that a 30-year-old man, who was his Facebook friend, physically assaulted her on December 6. The victim was living at a rented accommodation in Sector 21.

The compliant said the youth, who had settled in Kuwait (Saudi Arabia), become friends the victim on Facebook and during his visit to India committed the crime. The boy, who hails from Amritsar, works in Kuwait and claimed to have fallen in love with the girl.

The police said the victim had stated that after physically assaulting her, the man made false promises of marrying her but later refused to do so. — TNS

Cash, gold jewellery stolen

Mohali, January 2
Thieves struck at a house in Phase IIIA here decamping with cash and other valuables.

According to reports, Devinder Kaur lodged a complaint with the police that thieves took away two gold bangles, one gold chain, Rs 27,000 in cash, bank FDRs for Rs 4 lakh, two gas cylinders, garments and other items. — OC

Haren powers BECC win

A fine knock of 108 by Haren Goel and 66 runs by Depinder helped the Black Elephant Cricket Club (BECC) to defeat Diesel and Motor Works Cricket Club (DMWCC) by 89 runs in the 2nd Little Champs Cup organised by the BECC. Batting first, the Black Elephant Cricket Club team posted 209 for 2 in the stipulated 40 overs with the help of useful contributions by Haren Goel and Depinder. Both players played superb knocks and put their team in a commanding position.

In reply, the DMWCC side started their innings in a disappointing fashion and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They were bundled out for 120 in 36.2 overs.

Gagan, Lovely star in St Soldier School win

Chandigarh, January 2
St Soldier School, Sector 28, defeated Government Model School, Sector 40, in an SS Bawa Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament for Boys (U-16) tie.

After being put in to bat first, the government school posted 80 runs in the allotted 15 overs. Nikhil (26 runs) and Abhishek (21) were the main scorers. For the bowling side, Ravinder Pal and Harshil grabbed two wickets each.

Chasing a low total, the winning side attained the target in 13.2 overs. Gagan Verma and Lovely, with their unbeaten contribution, ensured the team’s win. Gagan scored 32 runs, while Lovely contributed with 30 runs.

In the second match, DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, thrashed Khalsa School, Sector 26, by 10 wickets. Batting first, Khalsa School posted a total of 61 runs in 20 overs. Jatin remained the highest scorer with his 21-run contribution. For the bowling side, Vikas claimed four wickets and Mandeep got three wickets. The DAV team’s chase was led by openers Hardeep (29 runs) and Kunal (19).

The tournament is being organised by the UT Cricket Association.

Tae kwon do: City youths win laurels

Chandigarh, January 2
The local tae kwon do team brought laurels in the recently concluded National Tae Kwon Do Junior Championship organised in Bangalore, Karnataka, from December 28 to 30.

Six participants from the city tae kwon do team won medals in the national-level championship held in Bangalore.

Pulkit and Akash won gold medals in the under-35 kg category while Vansh Bhardwaj and Karman Singh managed to bag a silver medal each in the 45-kg category.

Vansha and Bajrang Bahadur Verma bagged bronze medals in the lightweight category of the championship.

Athletics meet on January 5

The Chandigarh Master’s Athletics Association will organise the Masters’ Athletics Meet on January 5, at the Sports Complex in Sector 46, here.

The organisers will select the veteran team to represent the city in the National Master’s Athletics Championship to be held in Jaipur (Rajasthan) from February 20 to 23. Interested players can approach organising secretary Jiwa Lal (9417720655) for getting themselves enrolled for the event. — TNS

Atya patya national meet from today

The local Atya Patya Association will conduct the 28th Men and Women Senior Atya Patya National Championship at BMD Public School, Sector 63, from January 3 to 5.

The opening ceremony of the meet will be held on January 3. As many as 40 teams from across the country will participate in the event.
