2014
This is a matter of pure courage, of strength, of rock solid determination; this is a matter of honouring your words.
This is what one might view a resolution as — a ladder that determines your safe and happy passage to the next year. Is it so or it is just a word coined to make us feel better, for us to believe that all isn't lost and there is still hope?
This year too as you wake up, you will probably want to look
at things differently; hit the gym or prepare a nice meal for your wife or just throw that packet of cigarettes into the dustbin!
So what's your New Year resolution?

New Year, New Look
Renu Soni With the arrival of the New Year, let's see what the industry insiders have to say about interior design trends for 2014. Colour palette Many would welcome a shot of colour with open arms. It's a real attitude changer as bold rich tones replace softer hues. Try sparingly at first, and then see if you want more. The colour to watch out for is yellow. Too strong and it can be blinding, too light and yellow's zing is lost. Teaming it up with grey, taupe and sand will give you the right accent colour in the right place. Teal blue is still a popular choice as it pairs well with most colours, but for a more updated look combine it with spa blue. A deeper tone of red with butterscotch and a medium blue is an interesting combo. Khaki is all set to send out an organic colour message. When associated with cognac, black, tangerine, brown, sage green, and water blue, it offers an appealing palette. Fresh pattern Lots of solids in a room are safe but can be overdone to the point of boredom. Strong geometric patterns have been seen on fabric and furniture for the last three years. In 2014 we will see those dominating lines softened and classic floral, fluid and organic patterns replacing angles. Update your look by introducing floral cushions to your existing décor. If that's too much you can soften the look by marrying it to a white or neutral background. Natural texture Our interiors not only need to look good but feel good too. Natural elements such as warm woods, soft comfortable fabrics, textured tiles and smooth sleek surfaces will be the main focus for 2014's home décor. Reclaimed wood is definitely gaining ground. A slightly aged look and wide planks reminiscent of times gone by definitely gets my nod. Mix and match Mix classical furniture styles with more comfortable, upholstered transitional furniture. Mix contemporary or modern art with traditional interiors. We don't want to be surrounded by a look that's stalled—it's just like fashion, some designer and some Zara—make it your own statement. Cowhide cushions in modern colours add that personal touch that hit just the right balance between home fun and high style. Light up It's changing radically because of LEDs. Decorative and incandescent lighting is still preferred but introduce this power saving option wherever possible, as it is the future. Male touch As men are spending more time in the home, they are becoming more interested and involved in decorating. Although they still lean towards comfort rather than appearance, the good news is they finally understand there is more to beautifully designed home than an oversized sofa. Emerald was colour of the year 2013. This year, Pantone, the world leading authority on colour, has declared "radiant orchid" as the colour for 2014. This pink purple shade is a real contrast to the vibrant, luxurious emerald. "An enchanting harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones, radiant orchid inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm," says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute. This new era in colour has broken the rules and we've already seen it in fashion where outfits are no longer 'matchy matchy'. Expect to see the same in home décor too. Radiant orchid can easily share space with emerald, turquoise and other shades. (Soni is a Chandigarh-based interior decorator) |

Rhythm with reason
A finder and a thinker, a serious search for the roots and origin of the sounds; he grew up listening, which introduced him to a whole new world. Ace percussionist, a veritable bridge between the tabla and the djembe; Taufiq Qureshi's rhythms are layered with his love for Indian classical music and his interpretations of various world sounds. Having delved into classical music, ad jingles, fusion, world music and Bollywood, his real calling lies in Indian classical music but currently he renders it with a charming djembe twist to it.
He has also contributed his bit for films like Damini, Ghatak, Black, Mission Kashmir, Asoka, Devdas, Dil Chahata Hai, Sawariya, Dhoom2, Bhool Bhulaiya, Jab We Met, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, among others. We catch up for more on the sidelines of the Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan. What were your early influences? I grew up training in Indian classical music, but somewhere down the line was greatly influenced by all kinds of different sounds. Early on I loved RD Burman and got attracted to film music. Delving into fusion in the late 80s, the band Surya with Shankar Mahadevan and Salim Suleiman happened. I wanted to do something different not just classical music. So experiments with electronic sounds and programming in the 90s began. But in the mid 90s there was phase when I began feeling stagnated. I sat through nine to nine shifts pursuing studio jobs and that's when I realised I had to stop Bollywood. I went back to the live circuit and soon my album Rydhun (2000) happened. Of all the genres you have worked in, which do you find most satisfying? Classical music is the most satisfying; while Bollywwod and other contemporary music goes on side by side as that is something I never want to
stop doing. How did you start working on the djembae? In my years of research, I was looking for an instrument through which I could define and understand the roots of percussion. My search led me to the Djembe, the oldest percussion instrument. The Africans are the oldest race and it comes from them. It shares its shape with the middle-eastern tabal and dumbe from Afghanistan. The tabla was born out of the djembe and the pakhawaj. I felt since the roots lied in it, the djembe would be the right instrument to convey Indian classical rhythm with. Are you happy with the contemporary scenario and following of percussion instruments among the young? About fifteen years ago, no one really knew about this music but with the likes of Tirlok Gurtu and Shivamani it has become popular as well as found a real following among people. So in the contemporary set up, it's a nice place to be in; people are attracted to percussion and are exploring it like never before. What is the group Mumbai Stamp about? The group came into being eight years ago. We decided to use trash to create music. In Mumbai people discard so many things, which we saw lying around in the morning. So we picked up trash — boxes, cans, plastic bags, bins and created music out of them. The idea for the band comes from the stomp genre, where music is created with discarded material. Mumbai Stamp has provided the percussion for the title track of Dhoom 2 and the recent Havan Karenge song from Bhaag Mikha Bhaag.

Suit yourself
As the New Year dawns we look for new fashion trends. And what seems rather outlandish at first becomes acceptable later on. Armeen Khurana is studying fashion designing and she talks about her take on fashion. Your sense of style… Whatever suits you and is also a little trendy denotes style for me. Those who can carry off a smart dress always impress me. The latest addition to your treasure of clothing or accessories? A leather jacket from Vero Moda. Brand crazy or street pick-up? I like to experiment with both, though brands are a safe bet. Who would be your style icon? Sonam Kapoor for her impeccable taste. Who do you think is the worst-dressed celebrity? Hmm! Can't seem to pinpoint any one as everybody has their own style. Which look would your prefer - sporty, chic or glamorous? Sporty and glamorous if I can pick two. One fashion trend that goes beyond your comprehension… Bell bottom trousers is one trend that I really don't like. Your take on accessories? A few accessories always look good, especially bracelets. Given a choice which designer would you like to be dressed by? Manish Malhotra any day. What gives you a high on the confidence level? The appreciative look and compliments. — As told to Poonam Bindra |

Woman power
The family show Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai on Sahara One has been steadily gaining in popularity. And Prachee Pathak, who essays the role of Naulakha Devi, is riding high on its success. Prachee Pathak, who has completed an acting course from Bhartendu Natya Academy and is a pass-out from NSD, speaks about her character and lots more.
What is your character in the show? If I have to put my character in one word, then it is 'powerful'. It is a very different role from my earlier shows like Afsar Bitiya, Mann Ki Awaaz- Pratigya and Kairee. The character I play is of a very dominating woman who believes that bahus of the house should be ruled with
strictness. Do you think Naulakha Devi will be one big role in your career? The response to my role is great. People have started noticing me. I owe a lot to my production house and Sahara One, as I am climbing one step above. How different is it from the other characters you have played? My character is a big challenge for me as an actor. Naulakha has a style of her own. She is the only one of her type. What is so special about the show? It is a very different show, which showcases the relationship between a mother-in-law and a daughter in-law. This one is a brave attempt by Impact Tele Network Pvt. Ltd. How is it working with Payal Rajput and Aryan Pandit? We all have a good rapport off screen and I think that is very important. It has been a jolly good ride so far and I hope it remains the same. How is Prachee Pathak in real life? I am a big fitness freak. Acting and fitness makes me complete. What are your thoughts on the working pattern of television? There has been a big change. Today viewers can watch different shows. They have a choice. Today decisions are taken very quickly. What are your other projects? Aakhir Bahu Bhi Toh Beti Hee Hai is keeping me busy. Besides this I am not doing anything else. I am sure this show will open up many other doors for me. — Dharam Pal
