Follow promotion quota: Govt:
The Punjab Government has issued directions to the heads of various departments, divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, registrars and other quarters concerned to follow reservation guidelines for Scheduled Castes in true spirit for Class I and Class II promotions through departmental promotion committees. A government spokesperson said the Social Welfare Department had issued a dissenting note regarding the alleged violation of promotion norms.

Drug peddlers held:
With the arrest of two persons, the CIA claims to have busted a gang of drug peddlers in the state. Those arrested have been identified as Siya Ram of Pipron village, Daulpur district (Rajasthan), and Santu Singh of Khidaura village, Muraisa district (Madhya Pradesh). The police have seized 170 bags containing 59.50-quintal poppy husk worth Rs 1.75 crore from their possession. During the interrogation, it was found that the kingpin of the gang is Nirmal Singh of Dollewal village in Moga district. A case has been registered.

Labourers freed from kiln:
The district administration on Tuesday freed nine persons allegedly held captive as bonded labourers at a brick kiln here. The family members of the victims had been protesting near the kiln demanding their release. Bhagwant Singh, kiln owner, had even fired in the air two days ago to terrorise the labourers and their families. The Bhikhiwind police had booked him for the offence. It was only after Assistant Labour Commissioner Vipin Parmar intervened, and got the nine persons released, that the protesters called off their agitation.

Trader shoots self dead: Iqbal Singh (35), local shopkeeper, allegedly shot himself dead with his licensed revolver at his shop on Tuesday. The police have lodged a report under Section 174 CrPC. The deceased was into depression, the police said. Iqbal reportedly went to the first floor of his fired at his head with his .32 bore revolver. He was brought to Guru Nanak Dev Super-Speciality Hospital here where doctors declared him brought dead.

JAMMU & KASHMIR

Three held with weapons: Gandhi Nagar Police arrested three persons with sharp-edged weapons from Digiana Pulli. They are Ravi Kumar of RS Pura, Navjot Singh of Indira Nagar and Amit Sharma of Challas. Police said the police intercepted a car and after conducting a search, they recovered three sharp-edge weapons from them. Enquiry is on to find out why the accused were carrying weapons.

New Year bonanza for lecturers, 1,512 promoted: School Education Department promoted 1,512 lecturers as senior lecturers on New Year's eve. Details are available on, www.jkeducation.gov.in, department’s official website.

Unity within community PK's New Year resolution: Panun Kashmir (PK), an organisation of displaced Kashmiri Hindus, has set its New Year resolution to form a joint platform to achieve the dream of separate homeland for the minority community in the Valley. Addressing a meeting of Political Affairs Committee members, PK president Ashwani Kumar Chrungoo said there was a need to consolidate nationalist forces in state, as the emerging dynamics of Indian politics would throw a lot of challenges.

March to CM’s house foiled: The police yesterday foiled a protest march by BPEd and MPEd trained to the Chief Minister house's in support of their demands. BPEd and MPEd trained gathered at Parade Ground to take out a march to CM's house. However, police did not allow them to move ahead. Police had to arrest protesters as they were adamant on moving ahead. 

Qureshi wishes a prosperous New Year: Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi has wished the people of the state a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. In his message on the eve of the New Year, the Governor called upon people to work according to their capacity towards the creation of a better society with new hope and new ways of thinking.

Health tips given at NSS camp: A seven-day special National Service Scheme (NSS) camp concluded at Government Girls Inter College, Lakhibagh, here today. The camp was held under the leadership of Asiam Biswas. During the camp, schoolgirls were given tips on their health, cleanliness and social service.
