Didn't get enough support from party, says Dikshit
New Delhi, December 9 "I did not get the support from the party that I should have," she said. "The party and government went separate ways and that was a problem. There should have been more cohesion," she added. Dikshit's campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections saw only two public meetings by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and one by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, while she herself addresses four-five rallies daily to garner votes in the city. Dikshit had to face double anti-incumbency, that of the Central Government as well as of the Delhi Government. The AAP had promised a 50 per cent reduction in power tariff in Delhi while the BJP had promised a 30 per cent slash. The AAP had come up with the idea of holding assembly session at the Ramlila Ground where the Lokpal bill would be passed, Dikshit said. "We had explained hundreds of times that her government was not corrupt and also that electricity charges were decided by the power regulator DERC. But, people have not understood that," she added. Dikshit also admitted that her party had underestimated the AAP founder, Arvind Kejriwal's popularity. She also said that people ignored corruption charges against the AAP. "We did not understand the Kejriwal factor but there were corruption charges against him which should have been seen, but people did not," she said. But Dikshit did try to be practical about her defeat. "What has happened has happened. This is a people's verdict," she told mediapersons in Delhi. She added that all she wanted to see now, was a stable government for Delhi, but said that the Congress would have no part to play in alliance formation. When asked what she thought the AAP would do now, she said, "I cannot answer for the AAP". It was an embarrassing defeat for the post-independent India's first three-time women Chief Minister who lost her New Delhi seat to one-year-old political leader Kejriwal with a whooping margin of more than 25,000 votes. |
UPSC aspirants detained for protesting outside Parliament
New Delhi, December 9 The aspirants were detained until late in this evening. The police have not registered a case against them. The New Delhi district police have been informed that several UPSC aspirants would march from India Gate and stage a demonstration outside Parliament, which was in session today. "The aspirants did not inform us that they would hold a protest. So, when they reached near the north fountain that faces Parliament, we caught them," said a police officer. They were taken away in buses to the Parliament Street police station, where they were detained. Speaking to this correspondent at the police station, the aspirants said that recently the first major change in the preliminary stage of the Civil Services Examination was made in 2011. About 66.66 per cent of the syllabus was removed and a new "alien syllabus" called the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) was introduced. "The CSAT focuses on technical fields and it is a cakewalk for people who have pursued MBA or graduated from the IIT. But some of us have never studied these fields and suddenly they changed the syllabus and introduced this paper. The CSAT should be either made a qualifying test, meaning its marks will not be counted in the main merit or its weightage should be reduced. The UPSC did not provide any extra attempts or age relaxation for the candidates who appeared for the examination in 2011. They were just intimated about the changes," said Rakesh Kumar Singh. The second major change took place in the mains stage of the examination, about two months before the examination in May this year. Four out of the seven papers of the mains were changed. The aspirants are demanding 'three fresh attempts' and 'three years age relaxation' for all categories of students - general, OBC, SC and ST - due to the drastic changes made in the examination. With the three fresh attempts, an aspirant can sit for the examination in three attempts. The present age limit for different category of students is - general (30 years), OBC (33 years) and SC/ST (35 years). With a three year age relaxation, a candidate can give the examination for three years beyond his prescribed age limit. "There are aspirants who have spent lakhs of rupees and sold their land in their villages to finance their studies for the examination. They are the ones who belong to rural backgrounds and are most affected by the changes in the examination," said another UPSC aspirant. |

Snag hits Delhi Metro Blue Line
New Delhi, December 9 However, it is uncertain as to when normalcy would be restored, he said. "The problem has occurred due to damage in the signalling cable measuring around 700 m connecting the track circuits to the junction box between the Pragati Maidan and Mandi House Metro stations on the up line (towards Dwarka)," said the spokesperson. Due to this, Metro trains going towards Dwarka are moving at a restricted speed of up to 25 kmph between Pragati Maidan and Mandi House stations since the Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system is not activated due to disruption in the cable, he said. The officials said the maintenance work will be taken up during the night hours after the passenger services are over. "Since the fault can be rectified only by physically replacing the entire cable on the affected section, it will be carried out in the night," he said. In order to cater to the peak hour rush, the DMRC has inducted three additional trains from Indraprastha to Dwarka and necessary announcements are also being made at the stations, advising the commuters about the movement of the trains. Director (Operations), DMRC, Sharat Sharma, has constituted a three-member fact finding committee of senior officials to investigate into the incident. Cable theft cannot be ruled out as the reason for the fault. Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers using this Blue Line Metro were delayed due to bunching of trains on the route. The Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali train has been hit by the circuit problem often in the past, the last time being October-end and early November due to similar technical problems. |
