Institutional League of football a mere eyewash
Deepankar Sharda/TNS

Chandigarh, November 5
Waking up from a slumber, two years after of announcing the tournament, the Chandigarh Football Association is hosting the Chandigarh Institutional League for Mahindra Swaraj Football Cup at the football stadium, Sector 17.

During the 2011 general meeting, the association has decided to introduce football tournament for financial institutions, corporations and corporate houses. The matches were expected to be held on holidays and weekends.

But opposite to what was decided in that meeting, the association is hosting an institutional league (for the first time in these years) with having a total of 10-teams from colleges and government offices. In this league, eight teams are participating from colleges while two are from government institutions. SGGS College, Sector 26, DAV College, Sector 10, PEC University, Commerce College, Sector 42, Office of Audit General Punjab, Office of Audit General Haryana and two teams each from Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11 and DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 are participating in this league.

Interestingly, since 2011, the association has organised no tournament for senior level players. The association has also failed to organise the tournament with Rs 1 lakh cash prize money for local colleges that was announced during the annual calendar for the year 2008-09, till date. And in order to recover the damages and criticism, the association has come up with the new mixture of institutional league for the localities. According to the joint secretary of the association the winning teams will not be awarded with any cash prize in this particular tournament.

Rakesh Bakshi, general secretary of the Chandigarh Football Association remain unavailable to comment on the issue while some players were caught criticising the step taken by the local association. “The association should work on what it had promised. A college tournament is far more different that some tournament for institutions. The association should not perform mere formality. If they are interested in organising tournaments for college players then they should also give the announced reward of Rs 1 lakh,” said Gursewak Gill.

Exposure should be given at grassroots level: Tennis expert

Chandigarh, November 5
Exposure for the Indian grassroots level players should be the prime focus of the authorities that will uplift the standard of tennis in India. This is what Ana Salas, Technical Director Madrid Tennis Foundation, thinks when it comes to polish the talent for long lasting results.

In Chandigarh on her 15-days exposure trip, the three times + 35 ITF World champion, is all set to impart education and to share her experience with the budding local tennis players at the CLTA tennis courts, Sector 10. On the first day of her classes, she taught the basic training skills to the junior-level players in order to make them fit to play under any condition. “I am here under the Memorandum of Understanding of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) with Madrid Tennis Foundation. My prime focus is to make the local budding players aware about the need of strength, power and speed in tennis. The children here are as good as other players in Spain,”said Ana Salas. Adding further, “The players should opt for proper diet. Indian players are well built and they should maintain that level to last long,” said Salas.

When asked about the major differences to bridge in the gap of performances, she stressed on having more tournaments for junior level players. “Back in our country, a player of 16 years, plays almost 15 to 18 tournaments a year. This is the thing that is lacking here. The players need to stress on playing different tournaments, so to get used to pressure and in order to get motivated for hard practice. This will help them to run their tennis career for long and bag laurels for the country. The local authorities also initiate the step to organise various tournaments, said Salas.

Taking surprise, when the international level player was asked about managing studies along with playing such number of tournaments per year, she added that the players should look for options if he or she wants to excel in sports. “I am not aware about the system here but in our country the players opt for distance education system. Also, we have in house schools for players, where they are taught as per their playing schedule. I will prefer the same kind of system for the players of India and preferably for the local players. Along with playing the game, the players should be treated well in their academics through different means. If one is playing he should only play and while studying should study properly, she added. “My father was a tennis coach. I started playing at the age of 13-years and having a father coach helped me a lot in learning the game. I played my first major tournament at the age of 19-years. But in my academy, I always encourage young girls of 10 to 12 years. I have a passion towards tennis and I just wanted to live with that. Till date, being a director, I insist more on physical fitness,” said Salas.
