Cancer awareness walkathon held

Ropar, October 26
To commemorate “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” NIMAR International, a social organization, in collaboration with “ROKO Cancer London” and Punjab Police, Rupnagar, organised a cancer awareness walkathon here today. The walkathon was followed by a mega medical camp.

Local MLA Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Ropar Deputy Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Aggarwal, flagged off the walkathon at Government Senior Secondary School. Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, International brand ambassador of ROKO Cancer led the 1,000 young participants of rally and after educating and generating awareness among masses about the screening and early detection of cancer, rally culminated at Civil Hospital, Ropar. Dr Cheema, inaugurated the medical camp.

Ropar SSP IM Bhatti emphasised on the importance of early screening and leading a healthy lifestyle.

At medical camp, diagnostic tests of mammography, pep smear, blood sugar, ECG, were conducted free of cost and medicines were distributed.

Anti-cracker rally held

Patiala, October 26
The principal of Delhi Public School, Patiala, SN Shukla flagged-off the “Anti cracker rally” organized by students of the school, from the school premises. The students enthusiastically participated in the rally. The students, holding colourful banners like “Say no to crackers”, “crackers are environmental abuse” started their march at 9.00 am, passing through the main landmarks of Patiala city like Chotti Baradari ,Bhupindra Road, Leela Bhawan and City Centre.

A street play was also staged by students of DPS, Patiala at key locations. It conveyed the message of “Clean and Green Diwali.” The students gave the message that we should keep our environment clean and should not pollute our environment with noise and smoke of crackers. They pledged that they will celebrate green diwali and would stay away from crackers.

Girl reported missing

Kalka, October 26
Raj kumar, son of Gurdial Singh, a resident of village Kanguwal village, has lodged a complaint in police station that her sister Santosh (17) has been missing since October 24.

He has alleged in the complaint that his sister had gone to school. She did not return home. The police was investigating the case. — OC

National techno-cultural festival begins

Ropar, October 26
National techno-cultural festival “Minerva 2013” today started at Rayat Institute of Engineering and Information Technology, Rail Majra, near here today.

With participation from more than 50 colleges from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, UP, and Chandigarh the festival attracted nearly 10,000 students. The festival is being celebrated with theme, “Social Responsibility of Technical Students - Empowering and Enriching the Humanity.” — TNS

Mohali, October 26
A local Shiromani Akali Dal leader, Parminder Singh Sohana, who is also a zila parishad member from the Sohana zone and vice-chairman of the Labour Federation, has been booked for thrashing an Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) of the Punjab Police last night.

The victim, ASI Jagmal Singh, who is the driver of the pilot vehicle of Rajya Sabha member Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa's cavalcade, was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, where doctors discharged him after minor treatment.

The police has registered a case under Sections 323, 341, 506, 148 and 149, IPC, against Parminder Singh Sohana, Gurwinder Singh and two unidentified persons on charge of thrashing the ASI.

The reason behind the assault is said to be road rage. According to sources, the victim, who was returning to his home at Phase VIII in a private car after meeting a relative at Saneta village, did not give side to Sohana’s vehicle, following which the leader and his accomplices made him stop near Mauli Baidwan village and thrashed him.

Meanwhile, Sohana alleged that Jagmal Singh was trying to sped away after hitting the former's vehicle. Sohana also held a press conference today where he alleged that he was innocent and had been implicated falsely.

The area DSP, Ajinder Singh, said the police was investigating the matter.

“We have registered a case against Dhindsa and three others on a complaint of Jagmal Singh. We are verifying the facts and action will be taken only after that,” said Ajinder Singh.

Two killed in road mishaps

Chandigarh, October 26
Two youths, an unidentified pedestrian and a 25-year-old motorcyclist, were killed in two separate hit-and-run road accidents in the city on Friday night. The motorcyclist has been identified as Dinesh Kumar, a resident of Sector 22. The first accident took place near the Hotel Management Institute in Sector 42 around 11.30 pm. The police said the motorcyclist was lying in the middle of the main road. The injured youth was rushed to the GMCH-32, but he succumbed to his injuries during the treatment. The police has spotted rubbing marks of a four-wheeler on the spot. An FIR was registered at Sector 36 police station.

In another accident, the pedestrian youth (18) was hit by a speeding vehicle around 3.15 am while crossing the roundabout near the Governor House and UT Guest House. The police said someone passed the information to the PCR about the injured pedestrian, who was rushed to the GMSH-16. The injured was declared brought dead. A case was registered at Sector 26 police station. — TNS

Zumba dance marks sports meet

The Strawberry Fields World School celebrated its sports meet day in an unusual format — a weeklong schedule, where all students of the school participated in athletic events, drills, races and other fitness related compositions, here today. Making a graceful entry, the first lot of performers, representing classes VI and VII, performed a zumba dance followed by tae kwon do, demonstrating youthful energy, rhythm and balance with poise and elegance. Holding artistic props and swaying to music, it was not a surprise to see the audience too joining in and supporting the young performers.

The build up to the event was in keeping with the mood of the audience. Moving from musical events to action-packed races and winding down with other drills and exercise-based formations, there was not a dull moment. The 120-minute programme packed in a punch with a range of sporting activities that were universal.

The school follows an active sporting regimen based on the supreme qualities of true sportsmanship. Throughout the year, ongoing activities, coaching lessons and lecture-demonstrations reiterate the place of sports in a growing child’s life. Reiterating this spirit, students read out the sportsman’s oath, solemnly pledging to uphold the values like ethics, integrity, compassion and excellence.

The coming days will see classes KG to XII put up their respective displays with the march past, drills, yoga, races and many other events. Each day’s programme is independent with parents being invited, and medals being awarded at the end of the day’s activities. The meet ended with an aim of combining academics with music, sports, dance, moral value lessons and general awareness.

Tribune school’s annual athletics meet concludes

The 2nd annual athletics meet of Tribune Model School ended here today. Shivani Kaul, wife of Sanjay Krishan Kaul, Chief Justice of Panjab and Haryana high court, presided as the chief guest.

The function started with the release of balloons spreading far the values of Tribune Model School. The students presented a colorful cultural programme after the flag retreat ceremony. Also, the students of the school presented a Yoga performance. Principal of the school Vandana Saxena presented the Annual Report of sports for the year 2012-13.

The kho-kho team of MDAV School, Sector 22 defeated Paragon Convent School, Sector 24, by 11 points in a match of boys (U-14) category during the ongoing junior, sub junior and senior Kho-Kho meet being organised here today. In other matches of same category, the team of Government Model High School, Sector 46, trounced Sharda Sarvhitkari School, Sector 40, by 3 points while Government Model High School, Sector 43, beat Government High School, Sector 35, by 5 points.

Rati Ram wins railway cross-country c’ship

Chandigarh, October 26
The divisional sports association organised the Northern Railway cross-country championship today. The championship was inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager Anil Kumar Kathpal. Railway’s sportspersons from all divisions of Northern Railways and Jagadhri Workshop participated in the event. A total of 45 male sportsperson and 26 female sportspersons participated in the championship.

The competition was organised for individual as well as team performance and the male sportsperson were to cover 12 kilometres whereas female sportspersons were to cover 8 kilometres. In the individual category, Rati Ram Saini from Lucknow division, Devender from Firozpur Division and Karamjit Singh from Firozpur division bagged first, second and third position respectively.

Similary in women category, Archana Pal from Northern Railway Headquarter, Chotto Laura from Ambala Division and Ramneek Kaur from Firozpur division achieved first, second and third position respectively. The DRM addressed the sportsperson and boosted their morale.

Ryan blank Bhavan Vidyalaya 3-0

Chandigarh, October 26
The Boys (U-14) table tennis team of Ryan International School, Sector 49, defeated Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, to win the ongoing Inter-School Table Tennis Championship.

The team registered a 3-0 victory over the rivals in the final match of championship. The team of DAV Public School, Sector 8, routed St. Soldiers School, Sector 28 at 3-0.

In the finals of girl’s category, DAV Public School, Sector 8, blanked Sacred Heart School, Sector 26 by 3-0. Gurukul Manimajra School beat Sri Aurobindo School, Sector 27, at 3-0 to finish third. — TNS
