Mass resentment against UP govt’s decision to close Ganga canal
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, October 16
Mass resentment is pouring in against the decision of the Uttar Pradesh Department of Irrigation to close Ganga canal during the ongoing festive season in Haridwar,Uttarakhand.

Despite carving of a separate state of Uttarakhand, the 560 km Ganga canal starting from Haridwar is still operated by the UP Irrigation Department.

Owing to confusion over disputed properties between the two neighbouring states, every year in autumn season Ganga canal is closed for almost a fortnight for cleaning and maintenance by the UP government.

This has been done despite stiff opposition from devotees and religious organisations. As lakhs of devotees, pilgrims and tourists throng the pilgrim city of Haridwar during this festive season, several religious, social, political organisations, pilgrims, tourists and local people have raised their voice against the ongoing Ganga canal closure.

Ganga Sabha, which operates the affairs of Braham Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, along with the teerth purohits, saints and punda samaj have expressed their reservations about Ganga canal closure.

Maha Nirmani Akhada secretary Mahant Ravindra Puriji Maharaj termed the act as anti-Hindu as Har-ki-Pauri Braham Kund is the sanctum sanctorum, where immense religious/spiritual faith of people is attached with the holy Ganga river.

He added that Ganga closure had affected the water level capacity at Har-ki-Pauri and, thereby, was hampering religious rituals at the sanctum sanctorum.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad district chief Virendra Kirti Pal said that the holy flow of Ganga water should be restored, and condemned the ''tyrannical attitude'' of the UP government-run Irrigation Department.

Teerth Maryada Raksha Samiti chief Sanjay Chopra said Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna should intervene in this matter and hold talks with his UP counterpart Akilesh Yadav.

Sanjay Chopra pointed out that from Bhagirathi Bindu till Mayapur Check Dam, at least five foot water should be released during the Ganga closure so as to ensure that minimum water availability is there at Braham- Kund, Har-ki-Pauri, and adjacent ghats of VIP,Malviya,Nai Setu, Gau, Birla, Alaknanda etc for religious rituals to be performed by pilgrims. Teerth purohits also said that the interests of thousands of purohits and pundas residing at Haridwar on Ganga ghats were being harmed due to water closure at Ganga canal.

Ganga activist Sanjeev Chaudhari, who had last year staged an agitation in view of the Ganga closure, has also urged people to pressurise the UP government by holding agitations in connection with the issue.
