Parliamentary Board to decide CM candidate: Gadkari

New Delhi, October 16
Amid speculations that senior leader Harsh Vardhan could be the face to lead the party for the coming Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP today clarified that no name had yet been finalised as the chief ministerial candidate and that the decision on the issue would be taken by the party's apex decision-making body-the Parliamentary Board.

The statement follows intense speculations that Vardhan was all set to be anointed as the party's CM candidate-a post that his rival Vijay Goel- also the city BJP chief-is eyeing.

Former BJP president and party's Delhi in-charge Nitin Gadkari however clarified that "BJP has not selected any leader as its chief ministerial candidate. Whatever decision is taken on the issue will be finalised by the Parliamentary Board".

The speculation is that the central leadership of the party has zeroed in on Vardhan- a former minister with a clean image and someone who also enjoys acceptability among senior party leaders of Delhi. According to sources, many senior leaders conveyed their unhappiness over Goel's style of functioning to the central leadership while favouring Vardhan at the same time.

Vardhan, they felt, was best suited to counter the Aam Admi Party's growing footprint in the city and also to take on formidable Congress incumbent CM Sheila Dikshit. Apparently, Gadkari too is favourable towards Vardhan but party president Rajnath Singh seems to be rooting for Goel.

According to sources, the matter along with the shortlisting of candidates for the 70-member Assembly will soon be discussed by the Board. The central leadership may have issued a statement to quell infighting in the state unit, which it fears will worsen once the CM candidate's name is made public, sources say Vardhan remains the front-runner for the post.

What goes in his favour is the fact that several leaders of the Delhi unit are also supporting him. Though Goel has been trying hard to impress the central leaders, he has been accused of encouraging factionalism by some senior members. What BJP's central leadership fears is that Goel may work against the party by dividing its forces ahead of the elections if a decision contrary to what he wants is taken.

Sidhu may be shifted to Delhi in general polls

There are also speculations that BJP's Amritsar MP Navjot Sidhu will be fielded from Delhi in the next general elections. The three-time MP from the Holy City, who was accused of remaining absent from his constituency, is facing a rough patch with the Akali Dal government of Punjab. There are speculations that he will be shifted to Delhi by the BJP to favour the Akali Dal-one of the two major allies that the BJP is left with post its divorce with the JD-U. Sidhu had last month threatened a fast, accusing the Parkash Singh Badal government of deliberately neglecting development projects in his constituency.

New Delhi, October 16
The Aam Aadmi Party messengers have been actively engaged in reaching out to people in the run-up to the Delhi Assembly elections. Led by Arvind Kejriwal, the party is buoyed by the support it is receiving on the anti-corruption plank and has been improvising on campaign methods, with the latest being an advertisement to start on FM channels tomorrow.

After door-to-door campaign and out-bound calls on mobiles exhorting people to vote for an anti-corruption system, the AAP has finished its negotiations with six major news channels which would be airing the message capsule after about 10 days.

"We have been working out low-cost advisements and tomorrow we will have one on FM channels. We had sent the content to the Delhi Election Commission and got the approval. We have also finalised the advertisements to be telecast on six news channels during evenings in 18-24 exposures per day," said Dilip Pandey, a party member.

When asked about the funds and money spent on such advertisements, he said that the party has kept everything transparent and the donations have been put on its website for all to see. Moreover, Dilip added, "It is not the money that makes elections effective rather it is the message and the messenger in the form of Arvind Kejriwal that give the party an edge. He has credibility and people are able to relate to him. While the other parties lack this honesty and this will help us achieve the target."

"People have shown faith in us and are trying to do one-to-one connect with voters and we have been successful in our endeavour. Our strength is our volunteer base which the BJP and the Congress don't have. They lack the capacity and have been copying all that we have been doing like putting banners on flyovers," noted Dilip.

BJP wants white paper on PDS
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 16
The Delhi BJP today accused the Congress-led state government of plunder of foodgrain meant for the poor as exposed by a sting operation recently.

The party demanded a white paper on the status of the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Delhi. It also demanded sacking of the Food and Civil Supplies Minister and resignation of the Chief Minister over the latest 'expose' done in a sting operation.

Delhi BJP unit president Vijay Goel, addressing a press conference today, said, "The Congress is duping the poor through multi-crore PDS scam. Fake ration cards have been made in lakhs and a nexus of the Food and Civil Supplies Department and black-market players is in play. Foodgrain meant for the poor is being diverted to private flour mills. Mere suspension of half a dozen junior officials won't do. The scam has several components like selling foodgrain in the open market, routing substandard foodgrain to the ration shops and ration card scam."

He alleged that to engineer the loot in the PDS, the Congress issued lakhs of ration cards in the name of non-existing individuals.

"The 2011 Economic Survey of Delhi said that the city has 33.4 lakh households and 32.26 lakh ration cards. It had been found in 2008 itself that more than 1.7 lakh bogus ration cards were issued in Delhi," said Goel.

Fatherless minor violated by uncle
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 16
A 32-year-old married woman has alleged that two youths raped her inside her house in southwest Delhi's Bindapur area in the early hours of Sunday, the police said today.

According to the police, the incident took place when the victim was sleeping with her three children in her house. Her husband who works with a private firm was on night duty.

Two youths identified by the police as Santosh (22) and Roshan (24) have been arrested for allegedly raping the woman. They are her neighbours.

Close to midnight on the day of the incident, the accused allegedly went to the victim's house and rang the door bell. One of the children opened the door, assuming that his father had arrived. The accused barged into the house and allegedly took the woman to a room, where they took turns to rape her.

In her complaint to the police, the victim alleges that the youths before fleeing threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the incident to anyone. She narrated the incident to her husband after he returned home on Sunday morning. He took her to the Bindapur police station and reported the incident. A case of gangrape was registered there. The victim was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital in west Delhi, where her medical examination reportedly confirmed that she was raped.

In another incident, a 13-year-old girl has alleged that her uncle had been raping her for the last one year. The man who works as a food supplier with a private firm in Noida is at large.

According to the police, the matter came to light yesterday when the victim and her aunt approached them.

In her complaint to the police, the victim said that after her father's death about five years ago, she has been living with her uncle and aunt and their three children in a house in east Delhi's Khichripur area.

The victim alleged that her uncle told her that he would leave her aunt if she spurned his advances. After she revealed her ordeal to her aunt a few days ago, they decided to approach the police.

The police claimed to have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against her uncle. Teams of the police are searching for him.
