Man, son die in building collapse
New Delhi, October 9
The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Naki Quraishi (65) and his son, Mohammed Nafees, alias Bunty (37). The injured has been identified as Salman (27), who is recuperating in a hospital. He is presently out of danger. Mohammed Akram, a neighbour of the deceased, said that Quraishi lived with his three sons, Bunty, Salman and Bobby, two daughters-in-law and two grandsons at his house in the building. “The death toll would have been different if Quraishi’s other family members had been present at home,” said Akram. The police have registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code in regard to the building collapse. The Commissioner of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Praveen Gupta, has ordered an inquiry by the Additional Commissioner, incharge of the zone and the Chief Engineer to find out the reasons for the building collapse within three days. The Delhi Fire Service said that it received a call about the incident at about 7.40 am today. Six fire tenders were thereafter sent to the site of the incident. The building is situated at Mohammed Ismail Street near the Sheikh Khan mosque in the Bara Hindu Rao area. The building was reportedly built about 150 years ago and was renovated about a year ago. A local resident said that the owner of the building had constructed two more floors when the renovation work was being carried out. After the building collapsed, locals rushed towards it and started the rescue effort. By the time teams of Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Service, National Disaster Response Force and North Delhi Municipal Corporation reached, the locals had managed to take out three men. They were taken to the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead and the third one was given medical aid. Fearing that more persons were trapped under the debris, the teams of the agencies started the rescue operation. The police cordoned the site of the incident to prevent further congestion. The path leading to the collapsed building from Mohammed Ismail Street was so narrow that even a single machine could not fit through it. The agencies then had to arrange for several wheel barrows to clear the debris. As the debris was being cleared, the officials realised that no other person lay trapped under it. The building that collapsed reportedly also developed cracks in three to four houses nearby. The occupants evacuated their houses and took shelter in the residences of their relatives. |
Man shot dead by two bikers
New Delhi, October 9 The victim, Baljeet Singh, stayed with his family at Majra Dabas in northwest Delhi. He worked at the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital. His sister, Snehlata, told the police that two unidentified men barged into the house at about 7.30 pm on Tuesday. “Snehlata heard a loud scream and found Baljeet lying in a pool of blood. She saw two men fleeing the house,” said a police officer. Baljeet was declared dead in the house. His body was taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in outer Delhi for a postmortem. The police saw injury marks on his head, neck and shoulder. A murder case has been filed at the Kanjhawala police station. Snehlata told the police that Baljeet may have been killed allegedly by her husband, Ajit Singh, over personal enmity. He belongs to Haryana’s Sonipat district. He works as a Delhi Transport Corporation bus driver. She married him in 1981, but decided to live separately in 1983, due to domestic violence. Since then Snehlata has been staying with Baljeet. Ajit married again due to which Snehlata filed multiple cases in courts in Rohini and Sonipat. “We would meet at the court, where Ajit threatened us with dire consequences,” Snehlata told police. |
Judicial probe ordered into Pavitra case
New Delhi, October 9 “Police is investigating the case. Appropriate action would be taken against the guilty,” said Arvinder Singh Lovely, Delhi Urban Minister. Retired Additional District Judge B.L. Garg would conduct an inquiry into all aspects and circumstances leading to the incident of self-immolation by Pavitra Bhardwaj. “The retired judge would be requested to submit his report within three weeks,” said Lovely. Bhardwaj was an employee of Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, a fully funded college by the Congress-ruled state government. She attempted suicide due to alleged harassment by the college authorities and died on October 7. Meanwhile, a joint front, comprising employees, teachers and students, led by University and College Karmachari Union (DUCKU) is demanding immediate arrest and suspension of principal GK Arora and others indicted by Pavitra. DUKU has also warned the Delhi Government that it would carry a campaign against the Congress during this assembly polls. “We have taken a resolution to continue our agitation till Arora is suspended. If we don’t get justice, we’ll boycott the Congress in the polls as Pavitra did not get any response from the CM’s office,” said DUCKU president Rajpal. Despite a dying declaration, argued the deceased’s cousin, Ravinder Sharma, “There are statements that are speaking loud and clear that the principal is guilty and action should be taken so that this does not happen to anybody else.” |
BSP MLA’s wife murdered
New Delhi, October 9 According to the police, Rehana was Chaudhary’s third wife. She did not have any child. Rehana was alone at her residence when the incident took place. Chaudhary had reportedly left for the Haj Yatra on October 7 and was to return to Delhi after Eid. He is under the police scanner as he has a criminal history. The police can only question him after he returns to Delhi. The police suspect personal enmity to be the motive behind the murder. Their investigations point to a culprit who may have been acquainted with the victim, because the entry of the killer into the house was friendly. The investigators found two glasses of water and two used cups from Rehana’s house. “The culprits came to her house with the intention of killing her, because after firing a gun, they stabbed her in the back to make sure she is dead,” said a police officer. Rehana was murdered on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. She was found dead at 9.15 am today. Her maid, Sahajahan, had discovered her body. “She arrived at Rehana’s house for cleaning it. She saw the main door open and when she entered, she saw Rehana lying on the floor of the drawing room. She had several injuries and was covered in a pool of blood,” said the officer. Sahajahan rushed outside the house and informed a neighbour, Zujjaj Ahmad, who is the president of the resident welfare association of the locality. Ahmad then made a call to the police at about 9.28 am. Several police teams reached the site and cordoned the area. An investigator who saw Rehana’s body said, “She had sustained a gunshot injury on her chest and 10 stab injuries, including two on the neck.” The police claimed that things in the house had been scattered to portray an angle of robbery. Chaudhary’s elder brother, Hajji Sageer, had rushed to Rehana’s house from Bulandshahr this morning after hearing about her murder. “There was Rs 15 lakh cash in the house which is missing,” said Sageer. |
Red Cross stresses need to scale up sanitation
New Delhi, October 9 "The lack of sanitation continues to be a silent disaster with shockingly high human costs. Unless sanitation programmes are scaled up, the most vulnerable will fall behind even further," said Dr S.P. Agarwal, secretary-general of Indian Red Cross Society at a partnership meeting hosted here today by the society, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the World Health Organisation (WHO). "As the needs are enormous and the resources limited, no government, company or humanitarian organisation can take on this challenge by itself. Instead, all good forces have to join hands to ensure equitable access to sanitation for all in the coming years, starting with social mobilisation at the community level," said Dr Agarwal. WHO Representative to India, Dr Nata Menabde said, "The impact of inadequate sanitation on health, both in households and across communities is well-documented. The need for urgent, coordinated and coherent action in this direction is imperative. Through this partnership, we are ready to provide technical support to government's |
BJP plan to resolve CM nominee mess
New Delhi, October 9 There are supposedly three claimants for the chief ministership if the BJP gets a majority in the assembly. A few days ago, only Vijay Goel, president of the Delhi BJP and Krishna Nagar MLA Dr Harshvardhan were claimants to the job. As the leader of the Opposition in Delhi Legislative Assembly, Vijay Kumar Malhotra, also expressed his desire to contest the election, there are now three candidates for the chief ministership. In the last election, Malhotra was chief ministerial candidate, but the party could not win the elections. It had succeeded in winning only 24 seats out of 70. Malhotra had won the election from Greater Kailash. Harshvardhan has been representing the Geeta Colony assembly constituency for the last four terms. |

Statistics expose city government: Malhotra
New Delhi, October 9 Malhotra said that time and again Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit trumpeted the increase of annual income of individuals as the highest in Delhi but the reality is quite different. As on the one hand, the Delhi Government itself is stating that more than 73 lakh people are living below poverty line in Delhi, on the other, it is claiming that the average individual income of a citizen is more than Rs 1 lakh annually, and both the statements are contradictory. He said that as per the statistics released, there was more than 432 per cent increase in the school fee for the children during the past nine years.
