Contractual staff go without salary
Ludhiana, October 9
Clerks and data entry operators employed by the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) on contractual basis have not been paid salaries since December 2012. Having failed to evoke any positive response from either the LIT authorities or the state government even after persistent efforts, they have threatened to launch an agitation and stage a dharna at the Directorate of Local Government, Punjab.

MC official fined Rs 15,000
Ludhiana, October 9
The state information commission has imposed a penalty of Rs 15,000 on a superintendent working with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation for delay in providing information under the RTI Act. Besides penalising superintendent Jasdev Singh Sekhon, the commission has also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the MC.

Newborn handed over to NGO

The administration today handed over a newborn to the Swami Ganga Nand Bhuri Wale International Foundation, Dham Talwandi. The newborn was abandoned at Panghura Ghar of the Red Cross Society.

PCR cop assaulted
Ludhiana, October 9
A PCR personnel was thrashed when he tried to intervene in a fight between two groups near the city railway station. The police has registered a case against Harpreet Singh, Sarabjit Singh, Manpreet Singh and Gurvinder Singh, residents of the Dharampura and Ayali Kalan areas of the city.

Now, advance tax replaces entry tax
Ludhiana, October 9
The Excise and Taxation Department has introduced advance tax in place of entry tax. The advance tax will be deposited at the Information Collection Centres (ICCs) just like entry tax. For this, an entry will be made in the computer system at the ICC.

Rain spills water on tall claims

Heavy downpour affected the paddy and maize crops lying at the grain market here. Putting a question mark on the tall claims made by the market committee regarding appropriate arrangements in place for the procurement of crops at Asia’s biggest grain market, heaps of crops were seen floating during the two-hour downpour in the morning.

When marginal farmers in the state, hit by crisis, are giving up agriculture, there are a few who have been setting an example by adopting new techniques to keep the vocation sustainable. Davinder Singh of Muskabaad village is one such farmer who, once marginal, has now invested around Rs three crore in introducing polyhouse vegetable cultivation on his land.

Theatrical events rule penultimate day

The evening session of the youth festival at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) was ruled by theatrical events. The audiences were treated to mimicry items and one-act plays at the open air theatre of Panjab Agricultural University, after they were captivated by shabad recitals, bhajans and western songs during the morning session.

17 more cases of dengue reported

As many as 17 more cases of dengue have been reported today from different hospitals of the district. These include seven cases from Ludhiana district while six from out of the district and four cases are from Jammu and Kashmir.

Death mourned
Ludhiana, October 9
Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh today visited SGPC president Jathedar Avtar Singh Makkar's house to mourn the death of his youngest son Tejinderpal Singh. Badal stayed with the bereaved family for around half an hour. He said that he and the entire party stood by the family in this moment of extreme grief.

Cellphone snatched from businessman

There seems to be no stopping to snatching incidents in the city. The area falling under Division No 3 is the most prone one. In the latest incident, snatchers riding on a motorcycle snatched a mobile phone from a businessman in the broad daylight in the Harcharan Nagar area on October 8.

The Mansa police has arrested a gas agency owner and his employees involved in the pilfering of liquid petroleum gas (LPG) from domestic subsidised cylinder into commercial ones. The role of the gas agency near Cheema Chowk has come under scanner after the Mansa police conducted a raid here a few days ago.
