IAF urged to give land for taxiway

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has penalised the MC Chief Engineer, Public Health Division, and another MC official for not changing the water tariff category from commercial to domestic and forcing complainants to pay bills in excess.

Syndicate to forward case to CBI
Chandigarh, October 8
Recommending stern action against the Centre Superintendent, GTB Khalsa College for Women, Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, who was found guilty of harassing five female teachers at the college, the PU Syndicate today decided to forward the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Wildlife Dept starts investigation into killing of snake at shrine
Panchkula, October 8
A team of wildlife officials conducts investigations into the killing of a snake at the Mansa Devi temple, on Tuesday. A day after a snake was found in the golf cart of the Haryana Governor, Jagannath Pahadia, and the same was then killed brutally when it could have been thrown in the nearby jungle, this act came under the scanner of the Wildlife Department who initiated investigations today.

Industrialists move regulatory panel
Chandigarh, October 8
Against the orders issued by the Electricity Department for the imposition of advance consumption demand (ACD) charges, industrialists have now moved the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC). The Chamber of Chandigarh Industries (CCI) and the Industries Association of Chandigarh (IAC) have filed their petitions before it.

The 81st anniversary of the IAF was celebrated at the Air Force establishments here today, with several functions being organised to commemorate the occasion. Homage to martyrs, oath-taking, a barakhana and a social evening were held, which were attended by personnel from 12 Wing, No.3 Base Repair Depot and the Air Force High Grounds, as well as retired Air Force officers.

3rd ATF court to become functional

The third court at the Chandigarh Bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) will finally get functional with the appointment of Justice Prakash Krishna as a judicial member of the Tribunal. He is scheduled to hold court from tomorrow.

Enrolment drive
The PU has started the NSS enrolment drive on the university campus. The university is aiming to get around 500 students enrolled for the NSS camp, which will be organised in the first week of December. NSS campus coordinator Jatinder Grover said the students could collect the enrolment forms from the departments and hostels.

Prof Neera Grover denied extension

The PU Syndicate today rejected the proposal of the academic and administrative committee of the Music Department to give one-year extension to Prof Neera Grover, wife of PU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Arun Kumar Grover, in the Music Department as vocal studies professor.

Proposal to hike exam fee deferred
Chandigarh, October 8
The Panjab University (PU) Syndicate today deferred the proposal to increase the examination fee by 10 per cent. The university had proposed hike witnessing increasing expenditure to conduct examinations at the PU and its affiliated colleges.

The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has approved a proposal to set up a policy research centre on the Panjab University (PU) campus, which would focus on promotion of Industries-Academia Research.

Farmers block highway
Ambala, October 8
A traffic jam on the Ambala-Hisar highway after farmers blocked the road in protest against the refusal of procurement agencies to buy paddy with high moisture. The commuters on the Ambala-Hisar highway remained a harried lot for more than four hours today as the farmers who had come here to sell their produce blocked the road followed the stoppage of paddy procurement at the local grain market by the procurement agencies on the ground that it contained high moisture content.

The procurement of paddy has started at all the 33 procurement centres in the district. “Till today 5,275 MT of paddy has been procured by various government procurement agencies,” said Arun Sekhri, Deputy Commissioner, after reviewing the arrangements made in the mandis.

Thapar varsity bag gold in basketball
Patiala, October 8
The basketball team of Thapar University, Patiala, bagged gold medal in the inter- engineering university basketball championship held at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi (Himachal Pradesh).A total of 11 teams participated in the championship. In the final match, the wining side defeated Vallabh Government College (VGC), Mandi by 31 points.

Two decades after the Mani Majra notified area committee executive officer ordered the resumption of a residential site, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has set aside the orders.

Remand for convict, accomplice
Chandigarh, October 8
A convict in the German girl's rape case, along with his accomplice, was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a local court today. The Chandigarh police had arrested Harpreet Singh, who had jumped parole, and his accomplice Onkar Singh on the road leading to Mohali near the Sector 42/43/52/53 roundabout on October 5.

Former cashier of PNB held guilty by court
Panchkula, October 8
A former cashier of the PNB at Kalka was held guilty for demanding bribe by a local court today. The accused, Ram Das Baag, was arrested in 2011 by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a customer.

Man arrested for bigamy 
Mohali, October 8
The Mohali police today arrested a Pathankot resident for marrying a girl even after he was already married. The accused, Janak Raj, is working as a junior grade officer in a bank at Pathankot. Kaur has filed a compliant ant the accused has beenbooked under Section 494 and 420 of the IPC.—TNS

3 youths booked for usurping NRI's house
Panchkula, October 8
The police today booked three youths for illegally occupying a house of an NRI at Sector 6, Panchkula. The miscreants have been booked under Sections 420, 447 and 120B of the IPC.

3 held with stolen car
Chandigarh, October 8
Following the brave act of Harpreet Singh Walia, a Sector 45 resident, who caught a man escaping from police custody outside the Sector 34 police station, the Chandigarh police arrested two more accused, who were in a stolen car with a fake registration number.

 Players forced to bring own shuttles

The UT Education Department charges Rs 5000 annually from a private school to confirm their participation in all the inter-school tournaments and charges Rs 20 (per player) as entry fee from all the participants. A special budget is also allocated to organise competitions. However, it fails to provide shuttlecocks in the inter-school badminton championship hosted by the department.

Digvijay dominated the entire game and finished the match at 6-2, 6-3. In other match, another CLTA trainee Eklavya Singh defeated Sumit Pal Singh. The latter took the 1st set 6-1 and over a hamstring muscle pull he managed to win next two sets without taking chances 6-1, 6-2.

In the ongoing inter-school volleyball championship for girls (U-17), the team of Government Model High School, Sector 39, defeated the team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, by 2-1. The team registered a 23-25, 25-11 and 25-13 victory over the rivals. In the second match, the Government Model High School, Sector 34, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, by 25-13, 25-19.

Aanchal adjudged best gymnast

Gymnast Aanchal Sharma of Shishu Niketan School, Sector 43, was adjudged as the best gymnast (Rhythmic) in the girls (U-17) category during the ongoing inter-school gymnastics competition, being held here today. Ishita Dhir, DAV School, Sector 8, attainted the second spot while Sonamdeep Kaur of SGGSC Public School, Sector 26 finished third in the competition.
