Work on Gujja Peer road starts
Jalandhar, September 29 All three BJP councillors, Prem Lata Vashisht (Ward number 2), Bhagwant Prabhakar (ward number 4) and Kanwaljit Singh Bedi (ward number 22) under whose wards this road falls, were also present on the occasion. Bhandari said the road would be constructed at a cost of Rs 1.15 crore. The entire construction would be completed within three months. To a query, Bhandari said, “While the 22 feet wide road will be of the RCC, interlocking tiles will be laid on both sides of the road. Besides, adequate road gullies will also be laid to avoid the accumulation of water during rains.” In reply to a question about ensuring quality work during the construction of this road, Bhandari said, “I will myself monitor the construction of this road and it will become one of the best roads of the city." A number of residents who were present during the foundation laying ceremony for start of the construction of the road heaved a sigh of relief as this road had become one of the worst stretches in the city. Countless deep potholes and pits, which remain filled with water even after several days of rain, exist on this road. Nearly 1-km-long Gujja Peer Road connects several parts of the city with National Highway 1. Thousands of vehicles daily use this road, but the condition of this area is so pathetic that it seems no road had ever been constructed here. The wide potholes and pits make the road users think as if they are sitting on a see-saw. The dust on this bumpy road makes the commuters to have a harrowing experience in normal days. Their difficulties aggravate during rains, as several feet high water accumulates here and the road almost turns into a pond during a downpour. So much so, the potholes and pits remain filled with rainwater even after a week of downpour, which not only creates problems in smooth driving but also causes health problems for the road users and nearby residents. Now the residents hoped that they would get rid of all these problems after the construction of the road. However, some of them raised question about maintaining quality work during the re-carpeting of this road. |
87 cancer cases detected at screening camps
Jalandhar, September 29 While a total of 2,130 patients were checked yesterday, today, as many as 1,185 were checked, making a total of 3,315 patients undergoing check-ups during the two-day camp. While 30 new patients were diagnosed with cancer yesterday, an additional 57 patients were diagnosed to be suffering from cancer today, taking the total to 87. Civil Surgeon Dr RL Bassan said these 87 included both new and formerly diagnosed patients. Of these the respective tests that confirmed their condition were as follows - Pap smear - 6, FNAC - 6, Pbf - 2 and a whopping 22 were confirmed to be suffering from cancer by mammography. Other tests like ultrasounds, x-rays etc. were also confirmed. During the two-day camps, FNAC tests were conducted on 255 patients (149 yesterday, 106 today), USG on 365, X-ray 333, pap smear 258 and mammography 88. Notably, since no CT scans were conducted, there might be an addition to cancer patients after they are conducted in the coming days. Patients from Bilga, Bara Pind, Jandialam Mehatour and patients from the urban areas as well, were checked during the second day of the mega camp. Even though chaotic scenes and patients thronging the civil hospital were witnessed yesterday, it was relatively peaceful today with lesser patients going in for tests. Representatives of NGOs and self-help groups - Surinder Saini, Lakhbir Singh, Sushma Chawla - also played an important role in making the camp a success. A langar was also served to patients. Many patients still left
Notably, these camps are also being considered as a second phase to the process of identifying the cancer (surveying) patients in the district. While many people have thronged the camps, experts are of the opinion that more aggressive camps or surveys are needed to indentify all the cancer patients in the district. The authorities have also proposed a second round of camps given the fact that a substantial number of patients have not been able to report in these camps either. Dr Harit Chaturvedi, an oncologist, said, “While the camps have been a crucial first step, we believe a substantial number of cancer patients are yet to make it to hospitals due to the lack of awareness or will. So we have proposed a second round of camps to identify as many as patients in the district (and broadly in the state) as possible.” The Civil Surgeon said a second phase of camps might be conducted if the government gives a green light to the proposal. |
Famous ‘aarti’ writer’s name not known to many
Phillaur (Jalandhar), September 29 Pt Shardha Ram Phillauri was born in a Brahmin family at a small town Phillaur on September 30, 1837, but surprisingly a majority of the residents of this district do not know that he had written the "aarti" in 1863. Former HoD of the Hindi department at GNDU University, Dr Harmohinder Singh Bedi, who has done an extensive research work on Pt Sharda Ram and wrote three volumes of "Granthawali", told The Tribune, "Pt Shardha Ram was not only the creator of the 'aarti', but he was also a well-accepted religious preacher, freedom fighter and renowned literary personality who wrote first Hindi novel "Bhagyawati" and over a dozen other books, including some of them in Punjabi. Currently a small temple is located at the place at Passia Chowk in Phillaur where Pt Sharda Ram resided. This temple is located just about 1.5 km from the Jalandhar-Ludhiana national highway number 1, but only a few persons come here for paying obeisance due to the lack of information about the creator of the "aarti". Even this correspondent had to ask several persons for reaching the temple. A retired BSF inspector Raman Kumar, his mother Chand Rani and his wife Neelam are taking care of the temple. Pt Sharda Ram was married to a Sikh woman Mehtab Kaur, but they Small idols of Radha-Krishan are still kept in the temple, which were set up by Pt Sharda Ram himself. Besides Pt Sharda Ram's cushion, original photo and wooden chappals (Kharawas) have been preserved in the temple. Chand Rani, Neelam and various ladies headed by the president of Pt Shardha Ram Mahila Bhajan Mandali, Janak Dulari, daily perform a kirtan at the temple in the evening. While a special kirtan and langar will be organised at the temple to mark his 176th birth anniversary on Monday, the Phillauri Charitable Trust, headed by Ajay Sharma, will also held a function at the community centre near the Nagar Council office in Phillaur from 11 am to 2.30 pm. Ajay Sharma said, "There is a need to spread more awareness among masses about the creator of 'aarti'. We created this Trust five years ago for the same reason and are doing our best for that." |
