Serious note on comedy
When everyone around is whipping 'dollops done-to-death punches' in Punjabi films, one man is not deterred by all the talks about comedy films in Punjabi losing their steam.
Amit Prasher, the director who successfully tickled the funny bone of the audience in his debut film Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22, is all set to present another laughter riot, Ishq Brandy, the part of last schedule of which is being shot in the Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Jhanjeri campus. The film boasts of a multi-star cast including Roshan Prince, Alfaaz, BN Sharma, Binnu Dhillon, Japji Khera, Wamiqa Gabbi, Karamjit Anmol and Shavinder
Mahal. Despite the nineteen-to-dozen talks on the overkill of comedy, Amit maintains his stance. We dig in more. Have Punjabi films run out of subjects? Definitely not; Punjab is one place where you would find ample stories. We have to give it to Punjabi cinema, which is probably still exploring the comedy genre. We have examples that have been made on different subjects like Sikander and Nabar; I am sure many more are being made. Why is everyone making
comedy films? Everyone wants the audience to laugh. On a serious note, making a comedy film is as challenging as making a serious film. Do you think it is possible to make the audience laugh out of nothing? A comedy film should have loads of original punches and laughter that comes from situations only when it is required. Your second film Ishq Brandy is again a comedy film. Do you like the genre? I am a great fan of David Dhawan; he is a complete entertainer and this is something I relate to. I make comedy films because I like the genre. I am not making a film in this genre because everyone else is doing it. My comedy is not thrown in like seasoning; it comes from a situation after a character gets into it. Do Punjabi films have comedy for the heck of it? I cannot say about other films, but this isn't the case with Ishq Brandy. At the same time, a director cannot have any subject for the heck of it. You can't expect a film to be different because you have had enough of comedy. A film's content should be different in the right way. Is there a dearth of good comedians in Punjabi films? We have some very good actors like BN Sharma, Binnu Dhillon, Rana Ranbir and Jaswinder Bhalla, and there is space for many others as well. Punjabis have an inherent quality of laughing on themselves, how can there be any dearth of comic actors then? Off late, what has gone wrong with our Punjabi films, especially in the comedy genre? The filmmakers need to think out-of-the-box; comedy is an interesting genre, at the same time a tricky one to. The comedy films these days do look similar to the audience because the laughter is put without any thought; as I said for the heck of it. We need more professionalism in films, we need producers who understand filmmaking and we need script writers who can think much more creatively. Do you plan to make only comedy films in the near future as well? As much as I love this genre, I also want to explore other subjects. My next film will be a romantic film, again a subject that has lot of variations and can be portrayed in different ways. Punjabi films have rom coms, but nothing like an out and out romantic film. A comedy movie that you return
to always? Andaz Apna Apna, this is my all time favourite. This is a clean and absolutely situational comedy. What is the USP of Ishq Brandy? It is a comedy, I know with so many comedy films being made this USP makes little sense, but I would still stick to it. I am not sure you haven't seen my actors doing comedy ever, in Ishq Brandy however they will be seen in a different avtar. You wouldn't have seen a BN Sharma or Binnu Dhillon like this before.
Juke box
Ishq Brandy releases on December 6. The music of the film is given by Yo Yo Honey Singh and a young music director
Sacch. "The music of the film is entirely situational and for the first time you will see comedy songs in the film," says
Sachh. jasmine@tribunemail.com

Chill pill
Change could be just around the corner; the much-hyped growth of Punjabi film industry might jump on a different track. With some new themes, the scenario might get better; seriously hoping for the best though.
The cast of soon-to-be-released Punjabi film Aashiqui Not Allowed is keeping their fingers crossed. The film releases with the much-talked about Punjabi film Nabar; the director of Aashiqui Not Allowed Rakesh Dhawan, however, seems to find no issue with this. Along with his cast, Gurchet Chitrakar, Gurpreet Kaur Sandhu, Aman, Jaswant Singh Rathore, BN Sharma, Harnakshi Chahal and producer Sikander Ghuman, he tells us why he has pinned his hopes high enough. Cut to cut
Aashiqui Not Allowed is Rakesh Dhawan's first Punjabi movie as a director; he has also written the lyrics and story of the movie. "I approached many people for writing the lyrics, later I realised I could write better as I know the film in and out," he says. Rakesh calls the movie a comedy-thriller. It has some suspense as well. "I understand that we have umpteen comedy films; this one is going to be different. In this film it is the subject and the content that star." First take
The lead actress Gurpreet and lead actor Aman open their innings with this movie. They are excited, even when they know they are not singers. Smiles Gurpreet, who was seen in the reality show Perfect Bride. "I wanted to be a director, I found out it was not child's play; then Prakash Jha suggested I should act and things worked in that direction," she adds. Aman, on the other hand, has done loads of Punjabi music videos. "I liked the role and was on board," says the actor, who chooses to be quiet during most of the conversation. He let's his work do the talking! Role call
Gurchet Chitrakar is an acclaimed painter; he writes scripts for movies and acts as well. Or let's say, he is by far one of the few comedians who has cut maximum DVDs. "My role is very different and I want the audience to see it," he shares. Laughter man
Jaswant Singh Rathore is a mimicry artist and a stand-up comedian who was seen in Comedy Circus as well. This is his second movie. "Stand-up comedians doing comedy is okay; I am also acting in this film."

The eyes have it!
Photography has evolved as one of the most experimental mediums of visual art. SPS Grewal, the CEO of Grewal Eye Institute, Chandigarh, has a vision that is much different from others in the medical profession. A surgeon, Dr Grewal fancies photography and believes that it is "complimentary to his profession". He comes up with an exhibition titled Footprints. Pure passion
Dr Grewal has been a keen photographer for the last three decades. "Even as a youngster, I was mighty intrigued with the camera, the lens and how it translates images into memories. While I was studying medicine, photography was as much a refuge as a relaxation exercise for me. " Quality check
Dr Grewal, who has conceptualised almost all softwares at the Grewal Eye Institute, has been experimenting with the camera and its working for a long time now. "I believe quality is the essence of everything that I set out to do," he says while adding, "Perhaps that is the reason why I get my photographs printed in my own lab, where we take special care of the printing paper being used. Also, we have special colour lab monitors where we edit the pictures. Good equipment ensures a good product and I use special papers, including Epson, velvet, glossy and canvas to give a fine texture to my photos. I think photography is a process that translates reality of the moment into the finished product; therefore, one must take care of all the elements that go into it, right from the choice of camera, the subject to the final processing. I think that is the reason why it took me as many as thirty years to come up with an exhibition." Digital over reels
Having shot on the film rolls and digital camera, Grewal credits digital camera only for its huge data storage capability. "I think digital camera is as convenient as the films, just that it allows more data storage," he says. Noble cause
Grewal will be showcasing as many as fifty works from Maldives, South Africa and Srinagar. "The photographs will be on sale, the proceeds of which will be credited to the Roshni Charity Trust for free eye surgery." (On from September 26 to 29 at the Punjab Kala Bhawan, Chandigarh)

The importance of the ‘aim’
Jesse Grewal The position of the putter face at impact has the most significant effect on the direction of the ball. To get the putter face square at impact consistently, the aim of the putter face at address must be correct to avoid sub-conscious correction. As mentioned in the previous article there are two ways of holing a putt, a perfect stroke or a perfect compensation. In my experience most beginners learn to aim the club or the putter fairly correctly but begin to aim or align in different directions to compensate for the stroke or swing. So if a player slices they begin to aim left (for right handed golfers) to compensate for the slice. Similarly while putting they compensate with the aim to the starting direction of the ball. If they tend to pull the putt they aim right to compensate. To improve one's putting one has to correct the aim before beginning to work on the stroke. There are many drills to improve the aim. Here are some of them:
The coin makes one focus on the aim as compared to the path of the stroke. Basically putt to a smaller target for short putts. Once the aim is corrected this does not guarantee that one would 'hole' the putt. Then one has to correct the path or the second part of the compensation which has been created to compensate for the incorrect aim. (Grewal has coached several national champions and professionals apart from being coach of the Indian golf team for the Eisenhower Cup (World Cup) in 2008 and 2012. He is currently the Director of National Golf Academy of India and CGA Hero Honda Golf Academy. If you have any queries get in touch with him at parexcellence@tribunemail.com) |

A no-fuss birthday
Divya Dutta This is from me to you. As you read this write-up on my birthday! What better way to celebrate than to share your thoughts and feelings with those who love and appreciate you! For me, birthdays are always very special, to make the person feel it's their day; to do things that bring a smile... I always throw a party at home on my birthday and as the eve arrives I get stressed with the arrangements. Will everything be fine? Will all come on time? Will it be fun? Well, it always is! My party, unlike most, is cozy, informal and loads of masti! And all my friends come by. My soul-mate Sonu Nigam makes sure to come and wish me. And of course, everyone sits mesmerised listening to his golden voice when he sings for the birthday girl. Shyam Benegal, Irrfan Khan, Rajit Kapoor, Sudhir Mishra are the few who make my birthdays special. Someone playing the guitar, someone singing, the rest joining in over food and drinks...yes those are awesome eves! But this year is different. I shoot on my birthday for my next film Traffic with Manoj Bajpai, Prosenjit and Jimmy Shergill. So it's going to be a quiet dinner with family. The word quiet doesn't normally go with me! I love masti. But this option feels equal fun and different. I have the love and best wishes of all my friends, top grosser of the year like Special 26 and Bhagg Milkha Bhaag and of course your appreciation. Back home a lovely family and just be myself. That's peace, that's bliss, that's my sweetest birthday gift! The house is full of bouquets and flowers and I am thankful. But the one that stands out is a card, hand made by a friend, showing all the trouble he took to make me feel special. And a big thanks to you all for your love and admiration for me. I feel blessed with your mails and messages. To belong is the biggest blessing and you all make me feel that. And that for me is the biggest birthday gift as I quietly will blow the candle on the little cake, shall whisper a 'thank you' to you all. It sure is a beautiful day! (Dutta is a Bollywood actress) |

Take charge
Simmi Waraich They say early morning depression is more of biological depression. I feel very low in the mornings and towards the evenings I am better. Why? Simran, Patiala Early morning depression may be more common in biological or endogenous depression and evening worsening of depression may be more in depression in reaction to a problem. However, that is not always so. Depression can have varied symptoms. At times a typical depression may be there with increased sleep, increased appetite and even increased sexual drive. Also depression can be masked where the person has physical complaints which are vague such as pains and aches, headaches, gastrointestinal symptoms for which many unnecessary tests may be carried out and many medicines given when all that is required is an antidepressant and an analysis of the depression to check for psychosocial stressors which may be causing or maintaining the depression. Then a plan is made for treating it. Often people get antidepressants from a gastroenterologist or doctor of some other specialty but the patient may refuse to go to a psychiatrist because of misconceptions. I am a 36-year-old single woman. I was working in an NGO but I left it all. I left my walking and music too. I stay at home and worry about my future. My father is alone too but he goes out and has a lot of friends. I have few friends. Meera, Panchkula Sometimes we tend to fall into unhelpful rumination. Yes, you have had problems but consider options that you have now. Secondly, marriage alone does not make us happy. To move away from negative thinking try the five minute principle--If I get up and walk for five minutes outside, or for five minutes, let me just switch off my thoughts,"— it may help to replace your unhelpful thoughts with helpful thoughts. I love wearing black. It makes me feel sexy and slim. I feel black is versatile. I love wearing casual clothes and long dresses too. On stardom

After completing a week inside the Bigg Boss house, actress Hazel Keech becomes the first contestant to say good bye to Bigg Boss Season Saath 7. The actress who comes from a British background managed to sail through the difficulties of hell and befriended almost everyone inside the house.
How did it feel to be in the Bigg Boss house? Not as bad as I expected. It was fine. Staying in hell was ok but I only wish I had got the chance to go to heaven. Bigg Boss has been a great experience and I will treasure it for the rest of my life. It was quite easy for me to adapt to the place in spite of the limitations and it fortunately worked well for me. You had a language barrier and were seen making much effort in learning to talk in Hindi. Yes I did try. That was fun too. Now I hope my friend Elli learns Hindi during her stay in the house. You were unwell too. Yes, I had fever and body ache and was unwell for sometime. I met new people, made friends and also learnt that it is very important to have a positive energy when you are in the house. Who became your good friends from the house? I bonded with everyone especially Elli, Arman, Shilpa and
Ratan.
