Various cases of diarrhoea were reported due to water contamination in the district this year. In some parts of the city, especially Dhandhari Kalan, Sherpur Chowk and Fauji Colony, there are endless illegal water connections, pipes of which pass through sewage pits.

Pollution control board told to pay fine

Taking a serious note of deficiency on the part of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) in providing complete information under the Right to Information Act to city resident Hariom Parkash (advocate), the State Information Commission has reprimanded the Public Information Officer of the PPCB.

Govt failure to fill vacancies haunts Punjab Agricultural University too

The failure of the Punjab Government to fill the vacant posts across the state has now started to haunt Punjab Agricultural University as a number of offices have no permanent bearers to run them. Every retirement party in the university has been increasing the workload on the incumbent office-bearers.

High-potency drug worth Rs 2 cr seized
Ludhiana, September 7
The local police had a major breakthrough today when narcotics worth Rs 2 crore were seized by the police here. A high-potency drug called "ice" was seized by the Basti Jodhwal police. The drug costs Rs 10 crore per kg in the international market.

4 shops renting out hookahs raided
Ludhiana, September 7
The Health and Police Departments conducted raids at four shops on the Malhar road and took nine accused into custody for renting out “hookahs” and selling tobacco products and charcoal.

Gang of drug peddlers busted
Khanna, September 7
The Khanna police has claimed to have busted a gang of drug peddlers and arrested 23 persons, including a woman, during the Night Policing Plan near Biza. The arrested belong to villages around Khanna. SP (D) Khanna Rajwinder Singh Sohal said a police party led by SHO Sadar Waryam Singh had laid a naka near Biza.

Two arrested with pistols
Ludhiana, September 7
Two persons carrying 32-bore loaded pistols were caught in the Ganda Nullah area near Haibowal. The accused tried to escape from the police at a naka. They have been identified as Gurtej Singh and Rashpal Singh of Ladiya village. Gurtej is the president of the Student Organisation of India, a students’ body at Panjab University.
