‘Give way to ambulance’ drive kicks off

Patiala, September 7
Society for People’s Welfare and Awareness Patiala (SPWAP), an NGO, in collaboration with District Traffic Police, has started a unique campaign ‘Give Way to Ambulance’ to create awareness among the masses on smooth passage of ambulances carrying serious patients on roads.

The NGO’s chairman, Karamjit Singh Jatana, and secretary general Dr DS Bhullar, said, “It is our moral and ethical duty to make way for the ambulances so that the patients may avail the much needed treatment by reaching at a hospital on time.”

Traffic in-charge Hardeep Singh said it is the duty and responsibility of every citizen to learn and abide by the ambulance rules.

According to Dr Bhullar, fast improvements are being made in the ambulance rules in India and presently as many as 13,847 ambulances are working round-the-clock in over 35 states of the country under the National Rural Health Mission programme and more than 500 ambulances will be added this year. “But the public is not sensitive about their duties and responsibilities as a concerned citizen of the country,” said Bhullar.

Superintendent of Police (retd.) Sohan Lal, Dr OPS Kande, Amarjit Singh Cheema, audit officer Kamar Manjit Singh Dhaliwal, Kaka Ram of Red Cross Society, Kaka Singh Shermajra, Jawahar Lal Singla and Inder Pal Singh Saini, along with schoolchildren were present on the occasion.

500 examined at camp

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 7
Hargobind Sahib Charitable Trust, Khera Hansali, today organised an eye check-up-cum-operation camp at HGS College for Girls at Khera village under the patronage of Sant Baba Ajit Singh Ji Hansali wale. Minister for Food and Civil Supply Adesh Partap Singh Kairon inaugurated the camp.

A nine-member team of doctors from PGI, Chandigarh, checked up the eyes of more than 500 patients and conducted operations on patients where an immediate need for a surgery was felt.

Addressing the gathering, Kairon appreciated the efforts of the Trust for providing a team of quality doctors to check-up the eyes of rural people, who can not afford to visit PGI. He stressed on the need to donate eyes. He assured full assistance from the government.

The team of doctors advised the gathering to go for a routine eye check-up to avoid weak eyesight in future. “Children below 8 years of age and those above 40 years of age must go in for a routine check-up” said a doctor.

Punjab Colonisers and Dealers Association to hold thanksgiving rally

As many as 95 per cent colonisers have welcomed the Punjab government’s new policy for the regularisation of the illegal colonies, claimed Kultar Singh Jogi, president of the Punjab Colonisers and Dealers Association (PCDA) today.

After presiding over the meeting of the local unit of the PCDA, Jogi said the association would organise thanksgiving rally in Ludhiana on September 11. “The Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal while accepting our demands announced a simple policy to provide relief to the plot holders in illegal colonies. The new policy has given relief to the people who wanted to purchase plots at a cheaper rate,” said Jogi.

Speaking on the occasion, District president, PCDA, assured Jogi that all the members of the district unit would participate in the rally.

IT dept survey
‘Unaccounted income declared by businessmen’

Ambala, September 7
The Income tax department conducted a survey in around half-a-dozen business houses in Ambala City and Ambala Cantt, last evening. The survey team was led by Additional Income Tax Commissioner Sahilini Bhargav Kaushal.

Sources from the department alleged that many businessmen have declared an unaccounted income of crores of rupees during the survey. The survey continued till early this morning in a few enterprises.

The survey was conducted in a jewellery showroom, wholesale cloth shop, marriage palace and a footwear shop under the Section 133 of the IT Act. — OC

Tamanna’s murder
2 convicted in dowry case

Panchkula, September 7
The local court today pronounced a seven-year rigorous sentence to dowry victim Tamanna’s husband Vikas and his mother Krishna. Both the family members of the victim were held guilty by Panchkula district and Sessions Judge Ravi Sondhi yesterday.

Tamanna had succumbed to her injuries at PGI in November, 2012, following being beaten up badly by the accused. While her husband, Vikas had stated then that she had fallen in bathroom and got hurt.

Her post-mortem report however stated that she had a broken thorasic bone and ruptured spleen. The injuries had led to an internal bleeding and resulted in her death.

The 25-year-old victim was traffic constable in Chandigarh Police. Tamanna, also a National-level athlete, was recruited in the force under the sports quota.

Two get 7-yr jail for rape Ambala:

Vimlesh Tanwar, Special Judge, Fast Track Court, Ambala, has sentenced two accused in a rape and abduction case to a seven-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Friday. The convicted have been identified as Teja Singh and Jaswinder Kaur.

According to the prosecution, Teja Singh had abducted a 16-year-old girl on September 13, 2012, from Ambala City. Teja was accompanied by Jaswinder Kaur. Singh then took the girl to some unknown place and raped her.

On the complaint of the girl, the police had registered a case under Sections 376, 366 and 120-B of the IPC. — OC

Saji Mohan’s case adjourned to October 15

Chandigarh, September 7
Former Indian Police Services (IPS) officer, Saji Mohan, (44) serving 13-year imprisonment in a case of pilferage of drugs, was produced in a local court in the case pertaining to an embezzlement of Rs 13.8 lakh here today. He is accused of financial fraud during his tenure in Chandigarh in 2007-08 while he was posted here as a zonal director of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

One of the prosecution witnesses was expected to record his statement before the court in this case today. But the case has been adjourned to October 15.

Mohan was awarded 13-year imprisonment in March this year for pilfering the seized contraband and selling the drugs in open market in this region. He was held guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. — TNS

Punjabi singer accused of fraud in Mumbai Police net
Team sent to bring him back to Mohali

Mohali, September 7
The Mohali police has sent a team to Mumbai today to bring back Preet Brar, a noted Punjabi singer, and an accused in cheating and other several cases in the area. Notably, Brar was caught by the Mumbai police yesterday from the Mumbai Airport from where he was intending to go abroad. The Mohali police had sounded an alert on all airports across the country.

Mohali SSP, GS Bhullar, said his team would bring back the singer tomorrow. “A case under Sections 406 and 420 has been registered against the singer at Phase VIII police station on the complaint of a local resident, Amandeep Singh.

Besides, two or three more criminal cases have been registered against him at the Kharar police stations,” said SSP Bhullar. Brar’s bail application has already turned down by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

In his complaint, Amandeep had alleged Brar took Rs 51 lakh from him for getting him plot at Kharar. But neither he was given any plot nor he (Brar) returned his money, alleged the complainant, who had filed an FIR against the singer on July 31, 2013.

Chandigarh Academy come crashing down against SGGS-26

Players of the state-run Chandigarh Hockey Academy (CHA) while representing Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, tasted first their defeat, since the start of this academy, against SGGS School, Sector 26, (SGGS-26) during the final match on Inter-School Hockey Tournament for Boys (U-19), here today.

In the final of the tournament, played at the Government Model Senior Secondary Schools, Sector 37, (GMSSS-37) the players tasted a 4-0 defeat against SGGS School, Sector 26. Notably, the Chandigarh Football and Hockey Academy are being looked after by the UT Administration and the downfall of these same academies has been reported in the same columns. The administration is serving these players with best of the facilities with allotting a special budget for them. In the final of the championship, the losing team faced the bolt from the blue in the very second minute of the match when Jashanjit of SGGS School, Sector 26, sounded the wooden plank with a strongly hit ground-level shot. Soon, after receiving the wale up alarm, the CHA players started playing possession. But within the gap of five minutes, before the first-half whistle, the team went down to 3-0 with Harmanpreet (25th minute) and Gurkirat (30th minute) striking a goal each for SGGS side. Moving their goal-scoring campaign further, the SGGS team scored the decider in the second half with Raj Kumar, smartly dodging the defender, putting the white ball in-nets during the 36th minute.

In the ongoing Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) Tennis (boys and girls) Tournament, Zoravar Dhillon defeated Dhruv Malhotra 5-0 while Anirudh Sangra beat Shridam Anand 5-0, being held at the CLTA courts here today. The tournament will be held on the weekends of September 2013. The games are being played on a format with best of 13 games for green balls and best of 9 games for orange balls. The semifinals and finals will be of 3 short sets for green balls and best of 13 games for orange balls.
