3 bikers crushed to death
Ludhiana, September 2
Three migrant labourers riding a motorcycle were crushed to death under an overspeeding Mahindra Bolero in the Dhandari area last night. The victims have been identified as Dharminder Yadav (30), Sham Paswan (38) and Om Parkash (32). The incident took place when the trio was returning to the migrant quarters at Jagdish Colony in Dhandari village after finishing the evening shift at a dyeing unit in Focal Point.

Two RPF officers booked ‘under pressure’
Ludhiana, September 2
A day after two Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers were booked for kidnapping a three-year-old girl and wrongly confining a woman and her elder granddaughter, it has come to light that the Government Railway Police (GRP) has registered a case under pressure "to avoid action from the Punjab and Haryana High Court".

Online settlement of challans fails to evoke desired response

The online settlement of challans, an initiative taken by the district administration to provide respite to the public from doing the rounds of offices, has failed to evoke the desired response. Started nearly two months ago, only 80 challans have been settled online in Ludhiana so far.

Lawyers strike work
Ludhiana, September 2
The District Bar Association today observed a strike in protest against the assault on city lawyer Aman Mehta and his family. Association president Parupkar Singh Ghumman alleged that the law an order situation was deteriorating by the day in the city, resulting in a feeling of insecurity among people.

Aadhaar must for LPG subsidy: DC
Ludhiana, September 2
Deputy Commissioner Rahul Tiwari has said the Direct Benefit Transfer for LPG (DBTL) Scheme has been launched in 20 districts in the country, covering 7.3 million LPG consumers. He said under the scheme, the cash subsidy for LPG cylinders was transferred directly to the bank accounts of the consumers while the sale took place at the market price.

‘Nutri’ sample fails test
Ludhiana, September 2
A sample of "soyabin nutri", collected from a dhaba near Vishwakarma Chowk by the Health Department, has failed the purity test. The District Health Officer, Ludhiana, Dr Avinash Kumar, said, "A team, including Food Safety Officer Manoj Khosla and another official Harpreet Kaur, had collected seven samples of eatables from shops on August 29 and August 30."

The newly constructed burns unit at the Lord Mahavir Civil Hospital has become merely a show piece as patients with burn injuries are treated along with other patients. This was alleged by Shiv Ram Saroy, founder of Ann Jal Sewa Trust, an NGO, in a press note issued here today.

Principals participate in awareness programme

The District Education Office under the guidance of District Science Supervisor Varinder Kaur conducted a programme for the principals of over 150 schools in the district so that they can make their students aware of the adolescent education and AIDS. The programme was held at RS Model School.

The residents of the Jagraon area have been upbeat since the announcement of IAS officer Apneet Rayat as Jagraon SDM. An alumni of the Kamla Nehru College for Women, Phagwara, Apneet Rayat was selected for the 2011 IAS batch. Apneet Rayat had bagged the 79th position in the IAS examination.

14 drug peddlers booked
Ludhiana, September 2
Fourteen persons, including a woman, were booked by the city police under a special drive launched against drug peddlers. The drive was launched yesterday following the orders by Sumedh Singh Saini, Director General of Police. Besides, seizing 20 kg of poppy husk, the police has also seized 650 gm of heroin worth over Rs 70 lakh.

Three held with contraband
Khanna, September 2
The police has arrested three persons and recovered 65 kg of poppy husk and I.25 kg of opium from their possession in and around Khanna. The accused have been identified as Amit Hans of Khanna, Jeon Singh of Mohapur village and Muna Lal of Uttar Pradesh.

Stolen cars recovered
Doraha, September 2
The Doraha police has recovered stolen cars, one of which was stolen on Friday night. DSP Payal Balwinder Singh said during investigation, the police arrested Karan Sharma alias Honey, a resident of Doraha, who was trying to flee from the place with a stolen blue Maruti car (Number-PB-10-AL-6655).

Criminals’ gang busted
Ludhiana, September 2
With the arrest of six persons, the city police claims to have busted a gang of criminals who used to rob people by offering them a ride in their auto-rickshaws. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Isyad of UP, Mohammad Israil of Bhar, Vijay Kumar of UP, Mohammad Islam of Bihar, Mohammad Shah Alam of Star Colony, Manakwal, and Jasvir Singh of village Jhammat.

Weapon smuggler nabbed
Ludhiana: The city police conducted a raid at Civil City in Sandu Nagar and nabbed a notorious weapon supplier Ramandeep Singh, alias Ramnna, a resident of Bhora Colony, and found a .32 revolver and six cartridges on his. The accused was booked under various sections of the Arms Act.
