Migrant labourer kills wife

Ambala, September 2
The district police has arrested a migrant labourer for murdering his wife. The accused has been identified as Gopal, a resident of Chudiala village. Gopal hails from Lakhimpur Khiri in Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, both Gopal and his wife, Amrawati, were going through a rough phase in their married life. They have four children.

“At around 3 am today, he called another labourer friend, Raju, and told him that his wife had been killed in an attack by the Kala Kachha gang last night. Gopal asked Raju to help him cremate his wife, but Raju denied and instead informed the villagers about the incident,” said a police official.

As the matter was reported to the police, a team of Saha police reached at the spot and arrested Gopal. Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohinder Sethi said a case has been registered against Gopal under Section 302 of the IPC.

The body of the deceased has been sent to Civil Hospital, Ambala Cantt, for post-mortem.

7-yr jail for dowry death

Vimlesh Tanwar, Special Judge, Fast Track Court, sentenced a seven-year imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 to a resident of Ambala in a dowry death case today.
According to the prosecution, on September 8, 1995, Raj Rani, wife of Jhanda Singh, set herself ablaze. The brother of the deceased, Charanjeet Singh, in a complaint against Jhanda Singh alleged that he had been harassing Raj Rani for dowry.

He also filed a case in a court in this regard which was referred to the fast track court the previous year.

The court held Jhanda Singh guilty a few days ago.

300 students participate in quiz

Bharat Vikas Parishad, Bassi Pathana, organised a quiz competition ‘Bharat Ko Jano’ today. Amarjit Singh, a social worker, was the chief guest on the occasion while Manpreet Singh Sahi, president, presided over.

As many as 300 students belonging to 22 across the district participated in the quiz competition. District Public Relations Officer (retd) Jai Krishan, project chairman, conducted the contest. Addressing the gathering, Amarjit Singh called upon the other social organisations to raise their voice against the social evils.

In junior section, Harsimran and Tushar of Guru Nank Public School were adjudged winners and Jasanpreet Singh and Harleen of STS Public School were declared runners-up. In senior section, Rahul Kumar and Gagandeep of Lala Lajpat Rai School were adjudged winners and Bhawan Sharma and Hitesh Verma of Guru Nanak Public School were declared runners-up.

Punjabi University lift MAKA Trophy

Winning of MAKA Trophy for the years 2011-12 and 2012-13 by the Punjabi University, Patiala, took the shape of a mega event with its arrival on the university campus amidst impressive fanfare, beating of dhols, nagaras and fire crackers. The trophy, brought in an open vehicle, was received by the university fraternity of teachers, administrative officers, students and research scholars, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Dr Jaspal Singh, in the lawns opposite Guru Tegh Bahadur Hall, here today. Punjabi University has won the last year’s trophy by a huge margin of over 20,000 points.

Earlier, while presiding over the annual general body meeting of the Sports Committee in the Senate Hall, Dr Jaspal Singh said the real credit of winning the trophy goes to the student players, particularly those belonging to the rural areas, who toiled hard despite the paucity of funds and lack of international or even national standard facilities and infrastructure.

“They, along with their coaches, have really compensated for all these scarcities through their sheer hard work, dedication and commitment for their respective sports. It’s now for us to compensate them in whatever way possible for the honour they have brought to our university,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor said Punjabi University has now attained such a status in the world of university games that its name will always be mentioned whenever it comes to awarding of MAKA Trophy, which it has won for the fifth time. He exhorted the sportspersons, coaches and officials from the university and various affiliated colleges to make efforts to retain the highest position for the successive years.”

Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, Director Sports, presented a detailed report about the activities and achievements of the university during last year. In his presentation he said that the university won gold, silver and bronze medals in 22, 26 and eight events, respectively, in different team events in the inter-university competitions, besides 41 gold, 37 silver and 37 bronze medals in the individual events. The university sportspersons wrested 161 medals in the national and six in the international level championships.

Meanwhile, star cast of a Punjabi movie Hanni, including Harbhajan Mann and Sarabjeet Cheema, joined the celebrations.

Accused concocts story of marriage to get bail

In the local advocate Amarpreet Singh’s murder case, an accused, Sunbir Singh, allegedly concocted a story of his marriage to get regular bail.
The fact was revealed in the preliminary inquiry of the Mohali police to check the veracity of the accused’s claims in his petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

In his petition, the accused had requested the court to grant bail claiming that his marriage has been scheduled to take place on September 13.

On the directions of the High Court, the Mohali police conducted a preliminary inquiry and recorded the statements of the general manager of a printing press, which had printed the wedding cards of the accused, and the owner of a marriage palace, which the accused claims to have booked by his family for the function.

In the inquiry report, it has been mentioned that the general manager of the printing press in question had stated that the booking was made around one month ago.

The marriage palace was also booked last month.Inspector Navin Pal Singh Lehal, SHO of the Mataur Police Station, who conducted the inquiry, said the printing of the wedding cards and the booking of the marriage palace had taken place after Amarpreet Singh’s murder.“I have prepared my report and it will be submitted in the court soon,” said inspector Lehal.The court has set September 4 as the next hearing in this connection.

Man acquitted of molestation charge

A 25-year-old accused of molesting a four-year-old girl was acquitted after the complainant turned hostile at a local court here today. The girl was allegedly molested around five months ago when she was at a crèche run by the mother of the accused.

On March 16, the girl’s mother complained to the police that her daughter was molested by Monty, a student of BCom, at the crèche in Sector 38 West. The victim, a resident of Dadu Majra, started crying in front of her parents and narrated the incident to them.

However in the court, the victim as well as the complainant turned hostile leading to the acquittal of the accused.

Similarly, an accused of abducting a 13-year-old girl was acquitted after the girl in her statement recorded that she was not forced by the accused to accompany him. The parents of the girl lodged a complaint with the police that their daughter was kidnapped by Abhi, alias Naveen, a resident of Sector 34, on November 24, 2011. The girl was later recovered by the police on December 4.

The girl, however, refused to undergo the medical examination and claimed that she had left the house on her own. — TNS

22-year-old nurse commits suicide by self-injecting poison at Sohana

A 22-year-old nurse at Sohana Hospital allegedly committed suicide by administering a poisonous injection here today.
The victim, identified as Sandip Kaur, a resident of Daun Kalan village, Patiala district, was reportedly upset as her boyfriend had got engaged to some other girl after making false promises of marrying the victim.

The victim’s father, Jaswinder Singh, made a complaint against a youth, Aman, a resident of Jhanjheri village, following which the police registered a case under Section 306, of the IPC against him.

The police said that Aman and Sandip had come to know one another while working at a medical laboratory in Chandigarh. Later, both had left their jobs and Sandip had joined Sohana Hospital while Aman had joined CMC, Ludhiana. “Investigations are on in this connection”, said the police.

Man arrested for raping mentally challenged

Mohali, September 2
The police has arrested a person for raping a 22-year-old mentally challenged woman at her residence at Adarsh Nagar (Balongi).
The accused has been identified as Davinder Singh, a resident of Brahman Vasiyan village.

According to sources, the victim was alone at the house when the accused reached there to take a room on rent.

“Finding her alone, the accused raped the woman and fled the spot. When the victim raised an alarm, some residents nabbed him after a chase and handed him over to the police,” said a resident.

A case under Sections 376 and 452 of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Balongi Police Station. — TNS

Thieves decamp with jewellery, cash

Chandigarh, September 2
A daylight theft was reported at a house in Sector 19 today where thieves managed to decamp with jewellery worth around Rs 6 lakh. The house is close to the Sector 19 Police Station.

The theft was reported at the residence of Varinder Kumar Sharma, who works at the Punjab Electricity Board in Patiala, while his wife is a schoolteacher.

According to the police, the entire family left the house in the morning. The family came to know about the theft around 2.30 pm when the complainant’s wife returned home. Apart from gold jewellery, Rs 5,000 cash was also found missing. The entire house was ransacked. The police has registered a case.

Meanwhile, a theft at senior Punjab police official’s residence in Sector 16 was reported at the Sector 17 Police Station. The domestic help, identified as Rajesh, decamped with Rs 3.5 lakh from the residence on Sunday. Sources said the domestic help was hired only a few days ago. — TNS

The Handball Coaching Centre of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, (GMSSS-19) defeated Ajit Karam Singh International Public School (AKSIPS) in the opening match of the girls’ category during the 28th Sub-Junior State Handball Championship, being held at DAV School, Sector 8, here today.

The team registered a 9-0 victory the rivals. Earlier, the team led the first half at 5-0. For the winning side, Madhu and Alisha remain the top-scorers with a contribution of 3 goals each while Smrity netted 2 goals during the 28th Sub-Junior State Handball Championship.

In the second match of the day, the team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, thumped down Sacred Heart, Sector 26, by 5-0 with Pooja meeting 2 goals while Soni, Babita and Neha contributing a goal each.

In the last match of the day, the team of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, defeated Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 28, by 3-2. Sangeeta (2 goals) and Prachi (1 goal) remain the main contributors in the team’s win during the 28th Sub-Junior State Handball Championship.

Minerva Youngsters Club ground Indian Air Force team in soccer

Triumphant in their opening encounter, the Minerva Youngsters Club registered a 3-2 win over the Indian Air Force team, during the match of 126th edition of the Durand Cup Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Football Stadium Delhi, today.

Notably, after failing to get any tournaments or exposure through local football associating (Chandigarh Football Association), the team won their opening clash against the Indian Air Force and will now face the Tata Football Academy (TFA) in their second match, scheduled for September 4.

Pressurising the rivals, for first 30 minutes, the winning team with well executed strategy packed their mid-field and stopped the rival’s attacking line to penetrate team’s defense. In the 31st minute, acting quickly on a miss-pass by rival’s defender, right half-back Akib Javed, a former trainee of the Chandigarh Football Academy, posted the first goal for the team. He successfully netted the ball with a powerful half volley shot from top of the penalty area. After his goal, the team played the left 14th minutes of the first half with upper hand.

After lemon break, the team again marched towards the rivals’ area and in the 65th minute, bore the fruit when right striker Rajan Negi netted the second goal with his solo effort. In the efforts, the team faced a wake up call, when Air Force striker, Vivek Kumar, reduced the margin in the 69th minute through left flank.

The team feeling burdened at 2-1, called substitute Abhishek Kumar in the 75th minute and after five minutes of his entry, he proved his iron, with making the score to 3-1, in the 80th minute. As the match was coming to end, the Air Force side reduced the wining margin through Mandeep Singh, in the 82nd minute and the Chandigarh side named the match at 3-2.

The Chandigarh team went down to Patiala in the Katoch Shield Cricket Trophy, here today. The team, resuming at overnight 159 for 4 in 42 overs, lost Manan Vohra to an off medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma on 83 runs inclusive of 10 boundaries and a six. Later, the team continued to lose wickets at regular intervals folded up their innings for 218 runs in 60.1 overs. Medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma claimed Gurinder Singh, Jaskaran Singh and Rakesh Rawat in quick succession. He claimed 4 for 49 while Mohit Mohindera and Rajwinder Singh took two wickets each. In reply, the Patiala openers Kunwar Raina scored unbeaten 10 run and Ravi inder Singh scored 31 off 23 balls with three boundaries and 2 sixes ensured a 10-wicket victory for their team. Patiala got 7 points, including a bonus, to take their points tally to 8 while Chandigarh got -1 and their tally was reduced to 2.
