Palette full of gold
Daniel Swarovski clinked his way to the crystal society. The company wouldn't be what it is, if it weren't for the introduction of bling into our closets. From originally being used in the inaugural ball gowns and wedding dresses to even the Olympic ice skating costumes, bling has been quite a big thing. At the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week, designers showcased a fair share of the blazing phenomenon.
Sabyasachi Mukherjee ensured through his crystal cholis and heavily sequined creations that all that glitters is couture. Rocky S' collection comprised heavily sequined gowns and dresses. Off the ramp, Shruti Hassan rocked in an FCUK bling top. Bling is the new black, it is not blinding and we can't look for enough ways to wear it everyday. "You can introduce bling in your daily wear in a lot of ways. One can add sequined or studded colours to a monochromatic top. In the corporate wear, one can add sequins on the sleeves. Swarovski crystals are the handiest when it comes to instant bling. Just add them onto any outfit, at any one part and you are ready to step out," opines Simran Nagpal, B.Sc fashion design pass out who runs the label Chasim. Stepping back onto the ramp, Vikram Phadnis kept things obvious with his collection titled 'Nothing but the Gold'. "It's a myth that you can't wear gold and sequins in your daily wear. Crystals, sequins, gold and silver detailing instantly glamorises any dull outfit," nods Divya Minocha from Colourblind. She adds, "The trick is to not overdo things in a routine wear. One should either have bling detailing or carry a bling accessory. At any given point of time, there should be only one part of the outfit standing out." From experience and incidents, don't we know fashion faux pas are easier to make than fashion statements. "When people dress up from top to toe in bling, that's when it gets too much for the eyes," laughs Manveen Kaur, fashion designer, who's soon launching a label MK's Wardrobe. She adds, "These days sequined collars are in, they can be combined with subtle colours and plain trousers. The accessories are an evergreen way of introducing sparkle into your life. There are watches with diamonds and moissanites and footwear with swarovski." For those who are still running short of ideas there are the age old brooches and cuff links. "Brooches are slowly making a comeback. These days they can be worn over summer jackets or chiffon shirts," shares Tahira Kukreja, B.Sc fashion design student. Did somebody not share their take on the hair accessories? Adds Divya, "These days we have a lot of hair accessories in gold and silver. Just a hint of sparkle in the mane can enliven the outfit."

Sparkling effect
Every trend brings along its own set of bloopers. Shares Manveen, "The rule is to let one thing stand out. In your outfit, either you can jazz up your tee or your trousers. When people overdo, that's when it becomes festive wear." We could all do with a little sparkle on the feet, shimmer on the face and sequins on the clothes. But not all at the same time.

A sneak peek
They say, in fact they still say, shoes are a measure of a man. Only recently, if you catch a man wearing semi-formals and sneakers to go with, you wouldn’t dismiss him as a lazy or someone who carries attitude on his feet. The most favoured part in a man’s wardrobe, the shoes, is seeing an addition of cool comfort sneakers. While the moccasins obviously outnumber the lot, but he is slipping these sneakers more than often on many occasions (which by the way happen outside the gymnasium)!
Recently, many Bollywood and closer home our Pollywood stars have been attending the red carpet events in bright, cool colourful sneakers — a perfect combination of effortless style and comfort! So, while all you women strut in your wedges and pencil heels, the guys keep their feet grounded. Style file It looks like our celebrities have stumbled on something that existed for ages — sneakers. Says Pollywood actor Kartar Cheema of Sikander fame, “I wouldn’t dare to wear by Adidas sports shoes to any event or premier, it was recently that I attended the premier of Sahib, Biwi and Gangster Returns where I saw actors turn up in cool, stylish sneakers. The sole miracles can make a cool statement provided they are teamed properly.” The shoe style has definitely evolved with many sports shoe companies coming with bright coloured sneakers with a touch of style. The latest Superstar edition from Adidas has moved from the court to the streets, it has evolved from a revolutionary basketball shoe to an iconic symbol in hip-hop culture. Now, the most sought after street fashion sneakers has turned its swag on to the next level, with more exciting colours and styles this season. Adds Tushar Goculdas, brand director - Adidas India, “The Superstar has gained iconic fashion status over the years. They are cool and they will bring freshness to men’s fashion.” Peek a boo Men’s closet has many versions of sneakers, black and white converse to the coloured trainers. Actor Sonu Sood hits the gymnasium everyday in his special trainers. “I have a range of Puma, Nike and Adidas sneakers in red, blue, green, which I wear to all formal occasions and events. And in no way that they mean I don’t care about style, it says I care without putting too much emphasis.” Sleek sneakers actually make a style statement. Did someone just say you can put your foot into them in summers! The ones from Ed Hardy will change your perception then. “Sneakers were only for basketball players or for the gym, with growing fashion intelligence among men; they are now wearing them to various events. You can dress it up with a blazer and denims,” Karan Kundra shares. From the basketball court, the classic sneakers can be worn with anything. Now, these would be sans any glitz, basic and understated, Bollywood actors Shahid Kapoor, Kunal Roy Kapoor were seen in the classic range at many red carpet events. jasmine@tribunemail.com

A dotted affair
Sukhmani Polka dots are a great decorating pattern and look just as good in our rooms as they do on our clothes. It's not very busy but it can add detail to the wall or an element in the décor. Small coloured circles have a big impact on the overall design, even if they are used in the interior in "small doses." Polka dot also has the unique ability to make us happy just by looking at this pattern. Polka dots are adorable, but most of us don't think of them as something we would use in decorating around the house. There are many ways of using it in the interior design--from wallpaper to tapestries and rugs. The print is playful and given the right colour and size, it can also go well with other simple patterns like stripes. n Size and type of polka dot: Choose the scale and colour combination of your polka dot print to match your colour scheme and overall room design. You can go for a neutral background and colourful dots or a monochrome polka dot print. The dots can be big or small depending on the size of the room. A polka dot element: Just one polka dot element used in a room is enough to create a punch. It could be just the headboard, a single chair, curtains or even the lamp shades. Mix and match prints: Try mixing the polka dot with other simple patterns like the stripe or checkers. For a uniform look keep the scale of both patterns the same but if you wish to create a more dynamic look, try varying the scale and you will end up with a room that looks dynamic. You can use the polka dot on any surface. It can add interest to a large blank wall and make it look stunning. If you are hesitant on using this pattern on a large area then, small accessories like throw pillows are a great way to incorporate polka dots in small amounts into your home. A neutral colour scheme with just a pop of colour is a smart way to keep your décor sophisticated. Classic choices like black, white, or metallic ensure that your dot motif will remain chic for years to come. (Sukhmani is a Chandigarh-based interior and landscape designer) |

What goes around, comes around
Renee singh Stress can be infectious, so you need to recognize it in others before it takes a toll on you. There are many ways of reacting to stress but you must learn to read common warning signs and decide how to react to them. Looking for signs When the behavior of an individual changes from his usual pattern and you notice that his actions are not his usual ones, it might be stress related. The difference between a bad day and continuous stressful times is that the abnormal behavior continues or even deteriorates in the latter case. For example, when a person who is always on time starts getting late, when a soft spoken person is irritable and short tempered or a good listener is inattentive. Stress tends to accumulate at work places very easily as our fast paced life has too much happening for a person to handle. Work places are in fact the breeding ground for stress. We all need short breaks from time to time to release all stressful emotions even if that is only on the sub conscious level, so that our behavior with our loved ones and colleagues remains on a peaceful platue. Helping colleagues and friends under stress is our prime duty towards them, when we are aware that one of our loved ones is suffering from stress. We need to take adequate measures to help alleviate this state. Exploring reasons Once you have noticed signs of stress in a friend you need to start thinking about reasons for it. Consider all the options; it could be a domestic problem or a difficult relationship atwork. Once you have pin-pointed a likely cause you can assess how you can help. Noticeable behavioural patterns Whether we are helping a friend or a colleague we can identify his or her stress levels from the following behavior patterns Behaviour towards peers
Behaviour towards organisation
Behaviour towards self
Since these tell tale signs are a giveaway, you need to take the initiative to help. Give your friends in need some relaxation tips. There are of course innumerable ways to counter stress, the most suitable way would be to counter stress by using open and flexible work practices. Tips

Top to toe!
Kenneth Cole, the fashion label, is a pioneer in demonstrating its social and moral responsibilities Manpriya Singh Kenneth Cole, as a label, might not feature in the first quarter of luxury quotient but reflects the ethos of a brand that gets the pulse of the people right. The American fashion house named after the designer himself was founded as recently as 1982. At times, it's the visibility on the streets that matters more than exclusivity among the few. The legend has it that when the designer could not afford a room in the Hilton New York to display his items, he inquired about the possibility of parking a trailer a few blocks away. A friend in the trucking business came to his rescue and so did one of the borrowed 40 feet trailers. There was yet another hurdle. The permit for trailers was granted only to utility or production companies. The designer applied for a permit to film the full-length film The Birth of A Shoe Company. Kenneth Cole Productions came into being and sold 40,000 pairs of shoes in two and a half days. The rest, is, history or rather historical. Ninety retail outlets worldwide, apart from the catalogues and websites, are only a part of the statistics. The company retains the name of Kenneth Cole Productions and stands as an example in resourcefulness and a case study in problem solving. He is quoted to have said, "The best solution is rarely the most expensive and almost always the most creative." Need we say more? The designer Moving onto the man behind the eponymous label; the designer, the activist, the creative head has set the bar high with his efforts for AIDS research and by sponsoring the foundation amfAR. Considered the first in the fashion industry to do so, the designer has always meant to encourage change. The World Aids Day campaign by the designer in 2055 is probably unparalleled in the fashion industry. A year later, the company stopped using fur in their collections. Brand buff The brand deals in men's and women's footwear, clothing and accessories under the Kenneth Cole Reaction Line, Kenneth Cole New York and Unlisted. What scores with the youngsters is a bit of everything. Opines Mehak Walia, English honours student, "Kenneth Cole brings us international standards and trends at affordable rate. They are a class in their own." Just the things she kept in mind while picking up a pair of black stilettos. "I picked up these heels because of the blend of gold and black which is a classic and also in vogue." A classic and yet in; just the couple of things that converted the logo into a label to reckon with. |

Cherish or perish
The natural disaster in Uttarakhand and the tragic stories that hit the papers have disturbed each one of us. Amlendu Asthana has come up with a book on the same under the title of Prakritik Aapda, Hawa Or Boond Se Samvad.
"Those few days of the tragedy stirred something in my soul. How terrible it must have been for that man who lost nine family members and had to bury his son under a stone," says Amlendu. He spent time taking in the tragedy, going back to scriptures, trying to fathom the cause and thinking of solutions to the disaster and the result is this book. "Nature, religion and science all are three points of a composite whole that universe is and we need to maintain that balance," he says. The shivling that we worship is in the same form as Kailash. And in this sacred entity we have all the five elements in pure form - dharti, jal, hawa, agni and gagan, he infers. "Himalaya is a young mountain and we need to take care of it. Yet on the contrary, we are polluting it. Why don't we understand that we will disintegrate if we don't keep these five basic elements pure," he questions. Amlendu quotes the example of Kinnar Kailash where locals are troubled and concerned over outsiders going and plucking the brahma kamal, thus disturbing the ecological balance. He relates the mythological stories with current findings to establish that the need of the hour is to take care of our nature or perish! Two poems that find place in this book talk of how clouds that made interesting shapes in his childhood are long gone… "Man ko bahlane wale baadal aaj hum pe phat rahe hain." mona@tribunemail.com

Back with a bang
Wondering where Katy Perry disappeared? Well, seems like she was busy recording the new song Roar for her upcoming fourth studio album, Prism. Perry, Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, Max Martin, Bonnie McKee, and Henry "Cirkut" Walter have written the midtempo power-pop song. Here is what the city folks have to say about it… Sugar (pop) rush The song is a direct competition to her earlier hit, Fireworks, which I was fond of. I really think that she has done complete justice to this song too. The song is sweet and the peppy confection seems to get better with every bit. I love everything about the track. Nandani Bharat, Student Perfect mix The sound of the song is genuine. Also the writing is interspersed with sonorous hooks and searing sentiment. It is certainly one of the most perfect pop-song that has been created after a while. Roshni Manchanda, Student Infectious sound The song is bold, infectious and empowering, similar to her previous single, Firework. The song has epic, room-filling melodies and qualities, and it feels cathartic and perky at the same time. Karanveer Singh, Student — As told to Amarjot Kaur |

Karan Kundra gears up for B-town!
Jalandhar boy Karan Kundra has come a long way. From debuting in the popular romantic series Kitni Mohabbat Hai to hosting one of the most popular reality crime prevention shows Gumrah: End of Innocence, he has always kept exploring something new. Now Karan is all set to make his Bollywood debut in Vikram Bhatt's upcoming film Horror Story. In an exclusive conversation, he talks about the same and much more… Tell us about your film Horror Story and your role. As the name suggests, it's a horror story. It's an experimental film made on the lines of I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream. I play Neil, a musician who is going to the U.S. He is a very logical guy and always tries to find solutions. He travels to the US where seven of his friends give him a farewell in a hotel, which is haunted and that's how the story begins. Have you ever experienced any supernatural incidents? I have personally never experienced any supernatural incidents. My dad is 71-year old and he is the most logical person I've met, he doesn't deny it. So I can't say there are ghosts as I haven't seen one myself. But I know there's something. Your next film is Rum Pum Posh. How different is your character? Both the films are completely different and so are my characters. Horror Story is a horror film and Rum Pum Posh is a physiological thriller. I had a great time shooting for both. You're also seen as a host on crime prevention show Gumrah. Do you think we need more shows like that? I don't need think we need more crime shows. We have adequate shows. However, we need to become more responsible. Moreover, the existing crime shows need to stop sensationalising the story and get into the roots of the problem. That's what we do in Gumrah, we get into the psychological side of the crime and find why someone commits such crimes. How do you see yourself 10 years from now? I would like to see myself as an established Bollywood actor. I would like to do more films and work with best of the directors. Personally speaking, I just want to be content and happy with what I have. What kind of films would you like to do - a big multi-starrer film or a small film with a lead role? As an actor, I'm open to possibilities and ideas. I would like to do both as I enjoy doing a variety of roles. But I would obviously like to do good work and give my 100 percent to whatever I commit. What's happening in Punjabi cinema? There's a lot happening. My next Punjabi film Mere Yaar Kaminey is releasing on 11th October. It's a phenomenal film. My other film Control Paaji Control, which is currently under post-production will release on the 29th of November. |
