Municipal A stray animal attacks MC staff in Chandigarh on Friday. Corporation workers chase cattle for nine hours and end up catching 146 animals. Now, the fact that would take you by surprise is that it took the staff 22 days (from August 1 to 22) to catch the same number of animals.

Councillors for special meeting
Chandigarh, August 23
The BJP, SAD and nominated councillors today urged MC Commissioner Vivek Partap Singh and Mayor Subhash Chawla to hold a special house meeting to discuss the stray cattle problem. In a letter signed by 11 SAD-BJP councillors, it was stated that the number of deaths involving stray cattle had increased. They demanded that a policy to catch, release and shift stray cattle should be framed.

MC officials defend themselves
Chandigarh, August 23
MC Joint Commissioner Rajiv Gupta crosses a drain in the colony on Friday. Facing contempt proceedings for their failure to check the stray cattle menace, officials of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation today defended themselves by filing a detailed action-taken report in a court. In the end, the MC authorities tendered an unconditional and unqualified apology to the court apparently in an attempt to avoid the contempt punishment.

Police party zeroes in on accused, attacked in UP
Panchkula, August 23
The accused in police custody in Panchkula on Friday. With the arrest of three persons, the Panchkula police has claimed to have solved the Sector 7 robbery case. But nabbing the culprits was not a cakewalk for the officers as they were attacked in Saharanpur (UP). Investigations revealed that it was the handiwork of seven persons, working as domestic helps.

Officials busy playing blame game
Mohali, August 23
Residents of Chandigarh and Mohali continue to reel under water crisis due to leakage in the pipeline of the Kajauli Water Works. Officials of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) alleged that it was the slack approach of the officials of the Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Department (PWSSD) that had worsened the situation.

3 workers faint while cleaning manhole
Chandigarh, August 23
Three labourers of the municipal corporation engaged in cleaning the sewerage of Sector 48 fell unconscious after inhaling the poisonous gas while carrying out work. An eyewitness said the incident took place at 3 pm this afternoon when they were cleaning the manhole. The victims have been identified as Harjeet (45), Shubham (22) and Sanjeev (30).

Proclaimed offender arrested
Mohali, August 23
A proclaimed offender, accused of killing a Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate, Amarpreet Singh Sethi, has been arrested by the police. The police said Kevin Sushant, alias, Richy, was arrested by the Kharar police. He was later handed over to the Matour police.

GMCH starts service for mentally ill patients

The Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, has come up with a crisis intervention service for reaching out to mentally ill patients and destitute persons in case of an emergency.

A day after, schools become alert
Chandigarh, August 23
A day after dead flies were found in mid-day meal at GHS in Colony no 4, the government schools became alert. A random survey by The Tribune found that the mid-day meal utensils were clean at government schools.

Orientation programme
Mohali, August 23
Career Point Technical Campus (CPTC) organised a three-day orientation programme from August 21-23 on its Mohali campus. The motive behind the programme was to present students a way to learn, engage and change. Anoop Bansal, executive director of CPTC, gave a brief overview of the advancement in engineering. He encouraged the students to switch to open resource technologies.

Migrant youth found dead
Ambala, August 23
The body of a 16-year-old migrant boy was recovered from the bushes along the Ambala-Hisar road near Ambala this morning. The deceased has been identified as Devender, who was residing in the hutments in Sector 8. The victim’s father, Gangaram, is a labourer.

Newborn handed over to social organisation
Dera Bassi, August 23
The newborn, who was found abandoned near Chhat village two days ago, was handed over to a social organisation in Ludhiana today. The baby boy was handed over by the district welfare officer to the secretary of the social organisation, Swami Ganganand Bhooriwale International Foundation, Ludhiana.

56 unauthorised generator sets sealed
Dera Bassi, August 23
Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) sealed 56 unauthorised diesel-based generator sets on Thursday and Friday at Dera Bassi and Lalru region. The action was inititated as per the directions of the National Green Tribunal, Delhi.

Court allows MTP of 13-year-old rape victim
Panchkula, August 23
The court today allowed the medical termination of pregnancy (MTP) of 13-year old-rape victim. The victim was found seven weeks pregnant after a medical examination was conducted by the District Legal Services Authorities, two days ago.

HC paves way for construction of multi-storeyed residential buildings
Chandigarh, August 23
In a significant judgment likely to pave way for the construction of multi-storeyed residential apartments in the ‘abadi’ areas of villages on the city’s periphery, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has made it clear that the business of construction and the sale of flats cannot make a building constructed for residential purpose a commercial venture.

Two snatchers nabbed after hot chase at Sector 32
Chandigarh, August 23
An over half-and-hour long drama was witnesses on city roads when two snatchers were caught after a long chase by the victim and another resident in Sector 32 on Friday.

2 killed in road mishap
Zirakpur, August 23
Two youths were killed in a road accident on the Ambala- Chandigarh road in Zirakpur this evening. The deceased have been identified as Raman (20) and Lucky (22), both hailing from Uttar Pradesh. They were presently living in Kharar and were employed as labourers.

Cellphones seized 
Mohali, August 23
Officials of the Excise and Taxation Department seized a large number of mobile phones and impounded the Innova car in which these were being transported illegally. The estimated cost of the phones seized is about Rs 25 lakh.

Lucknow XI stamp their superiority

Lucknow XI (UP) entered the semifinal of the 12th ONGC SN Vohra Memorial Sub-Junior (U-14) Hockey Tournament after defeating MRS Hockey Academy, Amritsar, by whopping 13 goals to nil at the Sector-42 hockey stadium today.

Cricket tournament from August 26
Chandigarh, August 23
The Punjab Cricket Association will kick start its premier Punjab State Inter-District Katoch Shield Tournament from August 26. Six teams from Punjab-Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Chandigarh, will participate in Group-A of the league tournament. The tournament will be a testing ground for players aspiring to make it to the Punjab Senior and Under-25 teams for the upcoming domestic season. All the matches of Group-A will be of four days and will be played across various cricket grounds in Punjab.

St Kabir sweat hard to beat St Anne’s
Chandigarh, August 23

St Kabir School, Sector 26, clinched the fifth St Joseph's Inter-School Cricket Tournament (U-12) today. St Anne's won the toss and decided to bat first. Its opener Shiva played a good knock of 36 runs, along with Gurneet Singh, who also chipped in well made with 18 runs.
